The palace bells rang continuously, but it wasn't to celebrate anything... not the upcoming wedding of Prince Rhett or the soon-to-be coronation of Prince Marcus... but to summon every noble, priest, and elder, including the people, to the execution arena where the ancient wolf judgement ritual would be held until sundown.
The noise echoed through the kingdom, and within the palace the servants went ahead to serve breakfast. Everyone was obligated to come down and dine together, so reluctantly they pulled themselves off their beds, freshened up, and got dressed in white robes and garments specifically prepared for the occasion.
Everyone, including the Southern royals, sat down for breakfast and waited on the king, who arrived just in time. He sat down. The meal looked tasteful, but many seemed to have lost their appetite.
The king cleared his throat.
"Today may be the last day we sit whole, and we sit to honor this day."
