The Reader, the Chamber said. The Reflection. The Redactor.
"All of them exist," it told him. "Somewhere. In some layer of what is and what may be, they walk and speak and choose. But their stories belong to another layer of reality, one that your present self has not yet reached. You met them in the dream because the dream is the only place where those layers could touch. When you wake, you will not find them waiting exactly as you left them. But the truths they carried will follow you, if you allow them to."
Aether closed his eyes. The fury did not vanish, but it changed shape, cooling into something quieter and heavier, something closer to grief. He thought of the Forgotten Reader's kind and weary eyes. He thought of the Reflection standing in the Chamber, choosing, at last, to choose. He thought of the memory of the hand holding the pen, patient and waiting at the Empty Seat. Were they all, then, only echoes? Only shadows of futures not yet born?
