Chapter 49 - Question at the Bottom

In the crumbling upper hangar of the Gonggong Black Site, silence was dead. The Vanguard teams drowned in a sea of blood, rusted chains, and celestial anarchy.

Instructor Jax operated as a one-man meat-grinder. Atop a pile of shattered jade, Bai, the White Guard, glowed with a sickly green essence, relentlessly puppeteering dozens of dead Heavenly Court Enforcers.

"Drown in the discarded flesh of your masters!" Bai shrieked, sending a fresh wave of twitching bodies rushing the veteran.

Jax didn't say a word. The unlit match between his teeth barely twitched as he waded into the rabid swarm. His chrome arms whirred with brutal efficiency. He caught a jade polearm mid-swing, snapped it in half, and drove a crushing piston-strike through the chest plate of a revived guard, scattering the undead front line.

Across the hangar, Instructor Ren stood amidst a sprawling mountain of defeated martial artists. The rusted chains that had bound the ancient prisoners lay sliced into perfectly angled fragments. Blood pooled around his boots, but not a drop stained his black coat. He calmly flicked his katana clean and sheathed it with his left hand. As the surviving rioters scrambled away in terror, Ren's empty right sleeve fluttered in the chaotic drafts. He turned toward the deafening clash of metal in the center of the room and walked toward the others.

On the right flank, a sickly-sweet pink vapor swallowed Zeri, Ravion, and Deja. Through the fog, Madam Meng's manic laughter echoed from all directions, followed by the screeches of mutated celestial beasts leaping from the shadows.

"Don't let them break the circle!" Ravion roared, his golden eyes burning as he drove his glowing plasma spear through the jaw of a lunging beast.

"Covering fire!" Zeri screamed, ducking beneath a sweeping claw. Her holographic hand blasters whined and flickered under the intense strain. The hard-light projectors were dangerously overheating, venting superheated air as she poured a continuous, blinding barrage into the pink fog.

Using Zeri's suppressing fire, Deja launched herself forward. Her heavy-ion thermal axe cleaved through armor and corrupted flesh, keeping the beasts off Ravion's flank.

But the true nightmare anchored the center of the room. Captain Halden, Boro, Toben, and Lin Xia fought a desperate, losing battle against a god of war. General Taotie had ascended from the lower vaults. The twelve-foot monstrosity of muscled flesh and crude iron plating ripped a rusted structural beam from the walls, wielding it like a colossal polearm.

"Keep him contained!" Halden roared. She was a battered anchor in the storm. Her hex-shield gauntlet flared, projecting a kinetic dome just as Taotie swung the iron pillar in a devastating horizontal arc.

The impact was apocalyptic. The shockwave shattered the deck plates beneath Halden's boots, driving her to her knees. Her shield spider-webbed; blood poured from her nose.

"I can't override the defense grid!" Toben shrieked over the noise. The analyst frantically typed on a sparking wall terminal, his thick glasses cracked down the middle as he tried to bring the automated turrets online.

Beside him, Boro stood exposed. His shoulders locked as he unloaded his rotary cannon directly into Taotie's chest. High-caliber rounds sparked uselessly against the warlord's ancient iron plating. From behind a barricade, Lin Xia fired her pink conduit-rifle, but the plasma bolts merely scorched the beast's flesh.

Taotie didn't flinch. The jagged maw spanning his stomach dripped with dark saliva as he raised the iron beam to crush them.

Then, the perimeter vanished.

Artificial gravity slammed down, pressing the combatants with the weight of a dying star. The roof of the Black Site didn't just collapse; it was peeled backward. A deafening, cosmic groan echoed as a Chiyou Dominion heavy dreadnought breached the upper block.

Atmospheric decompression was instantaneous. Madam Meng's hallucinogenic mist shredded apart, sucking the poisonous clouds, dozens of floating corpses, and the screeching alchemist herself into the cold vacuum of space before emergency hard-light shields snapped over the exposed roof.

Through the shimmering barrier, the dreadnought loomed. It was a monstrosity of brutalist engineering—jagged, dark iron architecture bleeding crimson exhaust. It hovered over the hangar, blotting out the stars, and lowered a colossal boarding ramp that hit the deck plates with the force of an earthquake.

The frenzied prisoners stopped fighting. Deranged martial artists, mutated beasts, political dissidents—every rioter dropped their weapons. They turned toward the dreadnought and fell to their knees, pressing their faces against the cracked black jade in terrified reverence. Bai's corpse puppets collapsed into lifeless heaps.

"What are they doing?" Zeri breathed. She lowered her holographic blasters a fraction of an inch, her fractured ribs screaming in protest.

"Don't move," Instructor Jax commanded. He stepped out of the rubble, his dark sunglasses reflecting the dreadnought's crimson exhaust.

General Taotie dropped his iron beam. It hit the floor with a ringing clang.

The essent pressure radiating from the warlord was paralyzing as he turned his back on the Vanguard teams. Toben collapsed, clutching his head. Zeri gasped, feeling the oxygen sucked from her lungs. Even Ravion's knees buckled under the oppressive weight of the beast's aura.

Dozens of heavily armored Chiyou soldiers marched down the boarding ramp. They ignored the bleeding corporate cadets entirely, dropping to one knee as their god approached.

As his iron boots touched the ramp, Taotie paused. The warlord turned, his furnace-like eyes sweeping over the ruined hangar.

The maw on his stomach parted.

"Ten thousand years in the dark," Taotie said. His voice wasn't a sound; it was a tectonic event grinding through the marrow of the cadets' bones. "Tell the Emperor that The Iron Beast has returned to collect the debt of flesh."

With a wet snarl, the warlord turned to ascend into the warship.

"You're not collecting anything today."

The voice was quiet, but it sliced through the oppressive pressure like a scalpel.

Instructor Ren stepped out of the lingering smoke at the base of the ramp. He didn't sprint or shout. He simply looked up at the towering warlord, his left hand resting casually on the hilt of his katana.

Taotie paused. The jagged maw on his stomach twisted into a sneer of pure contempt. He reached out with a clawed hand to crush the lone swordsman.

Ren drew his sword.

The strike defied physics. There was no windup. Just the crisp, frictionless chime of steel, and a blinding, hyper-compressed arc of silver kinetic force tore upward.

It slammed directly into Taotie's chest.

The ancient iron plating—which had shrugged off Boro's rotary cannon—shattered like cheap glass. A jagged fissure erupted diagonally across the warlord's torso, tearing through the furnace-like eyes and spraying a geyser of thick, boiling black blood across the ramp.

Taotie staggered backward, letting out a tectonic roar of unimaginable agony. His knees buckled, and he collapsed against the bulkhead of the ramp, clutching his ruined chest. His elite guard immediately raised their weapons, swarming forward to shield their god.

Taotie let out a wet, rattling hiss, his massive frame shuddering. The warlord didn't counterattack. Bleeding heavily, he forced himself upright and retreated into the belly of the warship, his elite guard forming a desperate shield wall behind him.

"They're just... leaving," Deja whispered in disbelief, lowering her thermal axe.

The Dominion dreadnought's primary thrusters ignited with a blinding flare. The concussive shockwave knocked the remaining cadets off their feet. The colossal warship tore away from the Gonggong Black Site, folding space and vanishing in a streak of violent red light.

Miles away from the main hangar, in a ruined outer service bay, the shadows contorted.

Dove stumbled out of the darkness. Her pristine white coat was stained with dark blood from where Kael had crushed her ribs in the vault. Her featureless porcelain mask was cracked down the side. She didn't look like an omniscient assassin anymore; her breathing was ragged, her hands shaking as she keyed the access panel to a rusted emergency escape pod.

She collapsed into the pilot seat, her mind spinning from the psychic feedback of Darian's memory.

"It doesn't make sense," Dove whispered. Her harmonic voice hitched with terrified static as the pod's blast doors sealed. "How is it even possible?" she breathed, slamming her fist onto the launch control. The pod ejected from the dead moon, shooting into the void.

Back in the upper hangar, the vacuum left by the dreadnought's departure was immediate.

Without General Taotie's unifying presence, the remaining prisoners lost their fanaticism. Realizing the Dominion had abandoned them, the rioters broke. They scattered like roaches, scrambling toward the outer service bays and ruined escape pods, desperate to flee before the Heavenly Court's reinforcement armada arrived.

The immediate threat evaporated, leaving a battlefield choked with smoke, corpses, and groaning metal.

The fight was over.

The surviving cadets collapsed. Zeri slid down the side of a jade pillar, pressing her forehead to her knees as she let out a ragged sob of pain, her holographic blasters dissipating. Boro dropped his massive cannon, slumping in sheer exhaustion. Deja leaned on her axe, staring blankly at the blood-soaked floor.

Captain Halden pushed herself off the ground, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She looked over the shattered remnants of her team. They had survived the ambush, but they had definitively lost.

She turned toward the center of the hangar. The heavy blast doors to the central access shaft were blown open, leaving a dark, gaping maw leading miles down into the heart of the dead moon.

"Why didn't the prison get sealed?"

The silence from the lower vaults offered no answers.

"Kael... Darian..." Halden's fists clenched tight enough to draw blood as she stared into the abyss. "What the hell happened down there?"
