Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Sovereign Descends — Lin Tianren’s Battlefield Massacre

The flames of Zhao Lianhua's Royal Flame Domain had barely faded before the battlefield outside Ashenfall began shaking again. The third wave didn't slow at the loss of its vanguard. It simply expanded, tens of thousands marching forward behind the wreckage, then hundreds of thousands more, the ground trembling under the combined weight of claws, hooves, armor, and monstrous bodies moving in coordinated formation.

War drums thundered like the heartbeat of something dying slowly and refusing to hurry the process.

On the wall, the defenders watched the endless black tide reform. Some cultivators tightened their grips on their weapons. Some whispered prayers under their breath. Some simply stared, unable to process the scale of what continued marching toward them.

Because everyone on that wall understood the same truth now. The demons weren't testing anymore. This was the real war finally beginning in earnest.

A horn blast echoed across the plains, and from the center of the reformed army, eight massive figures stepped forward — demon generals, each radiating Gold Rank pressure heavy enough to feel from the wall, their combined auras spreading like a poisonous storm across the battlefield. Behind them marched twenty thousand elite soldiers, veterans of previous demon wars rather than raw recruits, the kind that had earned reputations as blood-drinkers and city-breakers across cycles most of Ashenfall's defenders had only read about in old records.

One general laughed, his voice carrying easily across the field. "Humans! You burned thirty thousand of our soldiers." His demonic wings spread wide behind him. "Now watch twenty thousand of ours tear your city apart."

The demon army surged forward at his word.

No one on the wall spoke. Everyone understood clearly enough that if those elite soldiers actually reached the walls, Ashenfall would drown in more blood than tonight's earlier fighting had come close to spilling.

Then footsteps sounded behind the gathered defenders, calm and steady. Lin Tianren walked forward, black robes moving quietly in the wind, no dramatic aura flaring, no explosion of visible power. Just presence, subtle enough that it took a moment to register, but every cultivator standing nearby felt it settle over them regardless.

Han Yueqing leaned on his sword and grinned. "Finally bored of watching?"

Lin Tianren looked toward the advancing demon army, his Dragon Heart Core pulsing once, slow and heavy beneath his ribs. "Someone needs to thin the numbers before they reach the gate."

Before anyone could respond properly, he stepped off the wall entirely. Gasps rippled through the defenders behind him.

He didn't fall. A golden ripple appeared beneath his feet, spiritual energy condensing into something like invisible stairs, and he walked down through open air itself, step by deliberate step, toward the demon army waiting below.

Alone.

One of the demon generals noticed him first, a huge figure with iron spikes growing directly from his shoulders. He burst into laughter at the sight. "One human?"

Another sneered beside him. "Have they already run out of soldiers to send?"

The demon army roared in collective amusement at the sight of a single figure walking calmly toward twenty thousand of them.

Lin Tianren stopped walking once he reached solid ground, standing alone in front of the massed army, eight generals watching him now like predators assessing something that had wandered too close to their territory. The wind moved slowly across the ash-covered plain around him.

"You're blocking the road," he said quietly.

He took one step forward, and his aura released — not explosively, not violently, but expanding outward like a rising tide, golden light spreading across the battlefield as the air itself grew heavier around every demon caught within its reach.

The laughter stopped abruptly. Their own demonic energy suddenly felt suppressed, dampened by something none of them had a framework for resisting properly.

He raised one hand slowly. "Sovereign Field."

The ground trembled as a massive golden domain erupted outward, five hundred meters, then a full thousand, everything caught inside it slowing perceptibly. Demon aura weakened across the entire radius. Beast instincts trembled uncertainly, unable to fully commit to the charge they'd started only moments earlier.

This wasn't ordinary cultivation pressure pressing down on them. This was bloodline authority, the same kind that had answered an ancient altar's recognition weeks ago in a chamber none of these demons would ever know existed.

The army roared and charged anyway, thousands surging forward like a black tidal wave despite the pressure working against them.

Lin Tianren didn't retreat from it. He moved instead, his body vanishing in a flash of golden light before the front line even registered he'd committed to anything. A single sword slash appeared across the battlefield in his wake, golden energy cutting cleanly through armor, flesh, and bone in the same motion.

Fifty demons collapsed instantly. He'd already reappeared behind the next line, moving again before the first had finished falling.

He raised one hand, and spiritual energy condensed instantly into a golden sword — not metal, pure condensed energy, ancient enough that it felt sharp enough to split mountains rather than merely armor.

"Golden Heaven Sword Art," he said, calm despite the chaos building around him.

He swung once, and a massive golden arc tore through the battlefield, demons exploding into fragments of black blood along its path, the shockwave alone crushing dozens more who hadn't been directly in its way. The demon army faltered visibly at the loss.

Only for a moment. Thousands more charged in behind the gap.

He moved again, faster now, deadlier, every step leaving bodies scattered behind him, every swing carving open entire formations before they could properly close ranks. The battlefield turned into a storm of steel and golden light, chaos organizing itself around the single figure cutting through it.

A blur of silver fire leaped into the fighting suddenly — his evolved beast companion, larger and considerably stronger than it had been even a week earlier, nine flaming tails spread behind it like a burning crown.

The fox roared, and illusion flames erupted across the battlefield, demon soldiers suddenly seeing ten different versions of Lin Tianren attacking simultaneously from every direction. Panic spread through their ranks instantly, soldiers swinging desperately at shadows while the real one cut through them like lightning finding the shortest path between two points.

Within minutes, thousands of demons lay dead across ground that had been open plain only an hour earlier. Even the eight generals watching from the rear had stopped smiling at the sight of it.

One growled, low and furious. "He's cutting straight through the entire army."

Another snarled beside him. "Enough of this." He stepped forward, raising his voice across the field. "Kill him."

The eight generals moved simultaneously, their combined auras exploding outward hard enough to shake the battlefield itself. Even Lin Tianren slowed under the weight of it — eight Gold Rank enemies, each individually powerful enough to level a city on their own, closing in around him from every direction at once.

One grinned cruelly, raising a massive war hammer. "You killed our soldiers. Now die with them."

For the first time since stepping off the wall, Lin Tianren smiled — not arrogantly, not mockingly, just a small, genuine shift in his expression. His Dragon Heart Core pulsed again, stronger this time, the golden aura around him intensifying in response. His beast companion growled beside him, their contract resonance surging in perfect unison with the moment.

He lifted the Golden Heaven Sword, golden lightning dancing faintly along its edge.

"Good," he said quietly, and the battlefield felt the word land despite how little volume it carried.

"Now it's interesting."

Far away, Var'Khal watched the entire exchange unfold with calm, unhurried attention — the burning plains, the shattered vanguard, the golden warrior standing alone among thousands of demon corpses with eight generals closing in around him and somehow still smiling at the prospect.

His eyes narrowed slightly. "So this is the sovereign-blooded human."

His mouth curved into something that carried no warmth at all, only genuine, patient interest.

"Good," he said, to no one in particular.

Because the war, from where he was standing, had finally started becoming entertaining.
