Chapter 30: When The Mask Falls
(Keifer's POV)
The message stayed on my phone screen for a long moment.
"Obsidian Circle. Alliance accepted."
Three simple words.
But somehow they felt like the beginning of something huge.
Aries leaned over my shoulder again.
Aries:
"Well?"
Keifer:
"Well what?"
Aries:
"Reply, genius."
Kuya Angelo folded his arms.
Kuya Angelo:
"Ask for a meeting."
That made sense.
If we were going to work together, we needed to know who we were dealing with.
Or at least know how they operated.
I typed slowly.
"Iron Vipers. Meeting location?"
Three seconds later the reply came.
Fast.
Too fast.
"Old shipyard. 11:30 PM. Come alone or with crew. Masks recommended."
Aries whistled.
Aries:
"They're dramatic."
I smirked.
Keifer:
"I like dramatic."
Kuya Angelo checked the time.
Kuya Angelo:
"Two hours."
That gave us just enough time to prepare.
The old shipyard sat near the edge of the harbor.
Rusting containers.
Broken cranes.
Salt in the air.
The perfect place for a secret meeting.
At 11:27 PM we arrived.
Six of us.
Iron Vipers.
Kuya Angelo stood beside me.
Aries cracked his knuckles.
Marco leaned against a container.
Luis and Dante watched the shadows.
But the place looked empty.
Too empty.
Aries whispered.
Aries:
"They ghosted us."
Kuya Angelo shook his head.
Kuya Angelo:
"No."
Then we heard footsteps.
Light.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Five figures appeared from behind the containers.
All wearing black.
All wearing masks.
They moved like they knew exactly where to step.
Exactly how to stay hidden.
Exactly how to control a situation.
Aries whispered again.
Aries:
"Okay… that's kinda cool."
The group stopped about ten meters away.
Right in the moonlight.
The tallest one stepped forward.
Her posture straight.
Confident.
Commanding.
Leader.
No doubt.
Her voice came through the night.
Calm.
Controlled.
Leader:
"Obsidian Circle."
Kuya Angelo nodded.
Kuya Angelo:
"Iron Vipers."
For a moment nobody moved.
Just two groups studying each other.
Then the leader spoke again.
Leader:
"You're protecting Keifer Watson."
I smirked.
Keifer:
"That's me."
She looked directly at me.
Through the mask.
And something about that gaze felt familiar.
Leader:
"We share the same objective."
Kuya Angelo stepped forward.
Kuya Angelo:
"Eliminate the threats."
Leader:
"Yes."
Aries raised a hand.
Aries:
"So… are we exchanging resumes or something?"
One of the masked girls snorted quietly.
Probably Amy.
Though I didn't know that yet.
The leader ignored him.
Leader:
"We already removed two targets."
Kuya Angelo nodded.
Kuya Angelo:
"We noticed."
Leader:
"Three remain active."
She turned slightly toward one of her teammates.
A girl holding a tablet.
Sophia.
Tablet Girl:
"Sniper located on rooftop building 42."
Aries blinked.
Aries:
"That's the one we were tracking."
The leader nodded.
Leader:
"Yes."
Kuya Angelo crossed his arms.
Kuya Angelo:
"Then we eliminate him together."
Leader:
"Agreed."
Something about her voice kept bothering me.
Not just familiar.
Almost… known.
I stepped forward slightly.
Trying to see her better.
Keifer:
"Before we do that…"
The leader tilted her head.
Leader:
"Yes?"
Keifer:
"I have a question."
Silence fell again.
Keifer:
"Why are you protecting me?"
The girls exchanged quick glances.
Just for a second.
Then the leader answered.
Leader:
"Because your enemies are dangerous."
That wasn't a real answer.
Keifer:
"Lots of people are dangerous."
She didn't respond.
I studied her again.
Height.
Voice.
Posture.
And suddenly a terrifying thought slammed into my brain.
No.
No way.
Keifer:
"Another question."
Kuya Angelo glanced at me.
Probably wondering where I was going with this.
Leader:
"Ask."
I stepped even closer now.
Close enough that the moonlight hit her mask directly.
Keifer:
"Do you go to school?"
Aries choked on air behind me.
The leader froze.
Just for half a second.
But I noticed.
Leader:
"That's irrelevant."
Keifer smirked slowly.
Keifer:
"Is it?"
My brain was racing now.
Pieces clicking together.
Jay acting strange.
Jay disappearing.
Jay avoiding me.
Five girls.
Keifer:
"One more question."
Kuya Angelo whispered.
Kuya Angelo:
"Keifer…"
But I ignored him.
I stepped right in front of the leader now.
Only two feet away.
Keifer:
"Are you…"
I paused dramatically.
"…Jay?"
The world went silent.
Behind the mask…
The leader didn't move.
Didn't speak.
Didn't breathe.
But that was enough.
Because I knew that silence.
I had seen it before.
When Jay got caught lying.
Aries whispered.
Aries:
"No way…"
Kuya Angelo stared between us.
Confused.
And then slowly…
Very slowly…
The leader reached up.
Her fingers touched the mask.
And pulled it down.
Jay Jay stood in front of me.
Moonlight hit her face.
Her eyes.
Her expression.
Calm.
Strong.
Unapologetic.
Behind her the other girls removed their masks too.
Savannah.
Sophia.
Amy.
Olivia.
Mia.
Aries whispered again.
Aries:
"Holy shit."
Kuya Angelo blinked.
Kuya Angelo:
"You've got to be kidding me."
I stared at Jay.
Still processing.
Still shocked.
Still trying to understand.
Keifer:
"You…"
She met my eyes without flinching.
Jay Jay:
"Yes."
Keifer:
"You're the leader."
Jay Jay:
"Yes."
My brain officially broke.
Keifer:
"You beat up Yuri."
Amy raised her hand proudly.
Amy:
"That was mostly her."
I looked back at Jay.
Keifer:
"You've been secretly running a mafia-style organization."
Jay crossed her arms.
Jay Jay:
"It's more organized than that."
Aries burst out laughing.
Aries:
"Bro your girlfriend is a supervillain."
I ran a hand through my hair.
Trying to process everything.
Keifer:
"All this time…"
Jay watched me carefully now.
Probably waiting for me to explode.
Instead…
I started laughing.
Everyone stared at me.
Keifer:
"I knew something was weird."
Jay blinked.
Jay Jay:
"You're not angry?"
I shrugged.
Keifer:
"Should I be?"
Aries nodded enthusiastically.
Aries:
"Most people would be."
I looked back at Jay.
Then smirked.
Keifer:
"You secretly beat up people who try to kill me."
I shrugged again.
Keifer:
"That's kinda hot."
Jay stared at me like she wasn't sure whether to punch me or laugh.
Kuya Angelo sighed deeply.
Kuya Angelo:
"I need stronger coffee."
Savannah smiled slightly.
Amy grinned like this was the best night of her life.
And standing there in the moonlight…
Two secret groups finally faced each other.
No masks.
No lies.
Iron Vipers.
Obsidian Circle.
Now officially allies.
And somehow…
My life had just gotten ten times more dangerous.
And ten times more interesting.
