Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Charmander

Chapter 13: Charmander

"Rank 10?!" Wang Sheng's jaw dropped. Even though Tang San had already hinted at it, hearing Lin Mo confirm it still shocked him.

How long had it even been? From his Spirit Awakening until now, Lin Mo had only cultivated for a little over half a year.

Yet he had already climbed from Innate Level 6 Spirit Power all the way to Rank 10.

That pace, while still not as freakish as Tang San and Xiao Wu with their Innate Full Spirit Power, was still terrifying. Among ordinary students, it was more than enough to make people feel hopeless.

Every other work study student wore the same stunned, envious expression.

It was the realm they all dreamed of.

Rank 10. Once you obtained your first Spirit Ring, you became a true Spirit Master.

"All right, stop staring," Xiao Wu waved a dismissive hand. She did not seem surprised by the breakthrough at all, her attention clearly elsewhere.

"Lin Mo, now you can finally show us what hatched out of that egg. I can't wait any longer!"

"Yeah, yeah, let's see it!" Wang Sheng snapped out of his daze and chimed in.

Under the curious, expectant stares, Lin Mo drew a deep breath and focused his mind.

A flicker of red light flashed in front of him.

The next instant, a small draconic creature appeared at his feet.

An orange body, a cream colored belly, huge blue eyes, and a tail wrapped in living flame.

Charmander.

The moment it appeared, it stole everyone's attention in Dormitory Seven.

"Wow!" Xiao Wu squealed first, her eyes sparkling. "He's adorable!"

She instinctively reached out to pet its smooth looking head.

But the instant her fingertips neared.

"Char!"

Charmander snapped its head up. Wariness flashed in its sapphire eyes as it opened its jaws, and a puff of orange red fire shot straight at Xiao Wu's hand.

The flame came suddenly and scorching hot.

Xiao Wu yelped, jerking her hand back and hopping away just in time. The fire brushed past her fingertips with a searing gust. If Charmander had not held back, that tiny jet might have singed her scorpion braid clean off.

"Hey!" Xiao Wu stared at her warming fingertips, then at the little dragon baring its teeth, tail flame flaring higher. "You, you little brat! Why are you spitting fire at me?"

She glowered like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, cheeks puffed out. Yet she did not dare try again.

Up close, against a fire breathing, bad tempered Charmander, she had no easy counter. She knew that if she tried to force it, she would end up regretting it.

And she rather liked her hair and clothes staying unscorched.

Seeing the clash, Lin Mo quickly crouched down and stroked Charmander's head to calm it.

A low rumble came from the little dragon's throat. The tail flame gradually settled, though its blue eyes remained wary, as if it had seen through her intentions.

"Sorry, Sister Xiao Wu," Lin Mo said. "Charmander is shy. He doesn't like strangers touching him."

"Hmph!" Xiao Wu pursed her lips, knowing she had been too hasty, and muttered, "Fine, don't let me touch him. No need to be so fierce…"

Wang Sheng and the others wanted to laugh at Xiao Wu taking a loss, but none of them dared. They all turned their attention back to the strange little creature.

After the brief commotion, Lin Mo introduced it properly.

"This is what hatched from the egg. I call him Charmander."

Everyone crowded closer, studying the little dragon. Its flaming tail alone was wondrous enough, that steady, ever burning fire made it look completely different from ordinary Beast type Martial Souls.

"Charmander…" Wang Sheng repeated the name, then nodded. "It suits him."

Then he smacked his thigh as if he had just remembered something.

"Hey, Lin Mo, your Martial Soul reminds me of Grandmaster's. That one, what's it called… right, Luo San Pao!"

"Your Charmander is kind of like Grandmaster's Luo San Pao!"

The others immediately reacted as well.

"Yeah! Both are Beast type, but they can exist outside the body like Tool type Martial Souls!"

"But Luo San Pao looks, well… pudgy. Like a dog and a pig mixed together. Not scary at all."

"Charmander looks way more spirited, and he even breathes fire!"

"Right, and his aura feels stronger too!"

Wang Sheng looked at Lin Mo with shining eyes. "So, is Charmander one of those external Beast Martial Souls?"

Lin Mo nodded. "Exactly. Like Grandmaster's Luo San Pao, he's an extremely rare external Beast Martial Soul."

He did not say anything more.

There was no need to mention Charmander's "Entei" talent, or the many Spirit Abilities it already possessed.

As an external Beast Martial Soul, Charmander was far too noticeable to hide. Lin Mo had long decided that one of his twin Martial Souls had to be shown openly.

Compared to exposing his heart Martial Soul, letting Charmander stand in the light was the smarter choice. It explained his Innate Level 6 Spirit Power and also neatly covered up the truth of twin Martial Souls, at least for now.

After learning the basics, the group stared at the lively Charmander with satisfied awe.

Watching a so called Waste Martial Soul egg hatch into a fierce new Martial Soul was novel, shocking, and strangely exhilarating.
