Chapter 19 - Century-Old Green Vine

"Roar!"

The Mountain Boar King let out a fierce roar. Its terrifying aura struck straight at the heart. Even in the forest, soul beasts like bears or tigers would generally not dare provoke the Mountain Boar King if their age wasn't significantly higher, showing just how powerful it was.

At this moment, its body was entangled in vines, but they had no effect. With a pair of sharp tusks, it charged at a massive tree that would take two or three people to embrace.

The trunk of this tree was wrapped in the main body of a century-old green vine. Its thickness was as large as a bowl, but against the Mountain Boar King, it looked like a fragile girl confronting a violent man. It could only be trampled, splitting and oozing sap.

About fifty meters away, Zhang Wei watched the scene, frowning, and thought,

"Green vine is one of the milder plant-type soul beasts. It usually coexists with the plants it wraps around and never actively attacks other soul beasts."

"The Mountain Boar King is highly aggressive, but it doesn't feed on green vines. How could they be fighting, especially on the outskirts of the Soul Hunting Forest?"

Zhang Wei was puzzled. Suddenly, an idea sparked in his mind, and he became excited:

"Or maybe the Mountain Boar King isn't targeting this vine at all, but something else, and that something just happens to be within the green vine's territory."

"If that's the case, the Mountain Boar King must not destroy it. I have to find a way to get it!"

At that thought, Zhang Wei's eyes glimmered red with desire, some might even call it greed.

He activated his martial soul, lifted his great bow, and dashed forward, moving so fast he left afterimages behind. Within ten meters, he leaped into the air.

His two purple soul rings flickered in succession. The third and fourth soul skills were released one after another. Instantly, blood-colored flames erupted from his body, startling the two soul beasts still locked in combat.

But it was already too late. Zhang Wei drew his bow, gathering soul power into a fully formed arrow, also burning with blood-colored flames.

With a loud shout, the soul-powered arrow shot out, stirring the air and trailing fire as it struck the Mountain Boar King's rear. The flames exploded, engulfing everything nearby.

"Roar!"

The Mountain Boar King's howl was agonizing beyond measure.

Even though its hide was as hard as armor, it couldn't withstand a strike formed from two thousand-year soul skills. With the third soul skill enhancing its power and the fourth unleashing the attack, it was severely wounded in an instant.

After this scream, the Mountain Boar King limped away, its body scorched, and the stench of blood turning into the aroma of cooked meat. Staying any longer would have meant death.

Zhang Wei landed on the ground and didn't pursue. He panted heavily, having exerted two of his strongest thousand-year soul skills. Even for him, no longer in his prime, it was a significant burden.

He quickly approached the green vine, which was now barely alive, looking wilted. If plant-type soul beasts didn't have strong vitality, it would have died earlier.

Zhang Wei waved his hand, dispersing the residual power from the explosion, and began digging at the tree's base. Soon, he uncovered three dark objects hidden among the roots.

He chuckled excitedly, looking more like a mischievous rogue than a respected headmaster:

"Summer Truffle Fungus, good stuff, hehe…"

This was exactly what the Mountain Boar King had been after. Consuming it enhanced its scent, attracting sows to mate with it.

For humans, it had remarkable effects too, strengthening essence and blood, improving endurance,a true boon for middle-aged and older men.

Zhang Wei, as headmaster of Notting Academy, had status, wealth, and reputation. Naturally, indulgence had made him somewhat decadent. He had grown weary of regular pleasures and sought new excitement.

This explained why he acted decisively. In the dangerous Soul Hunting Forest, no one would normally engage in unnecessary fights.

Before long, all teachers and students from Notting Academy arrived. They had heard the loud commotion and were amazed at the scorched trees and the furrowed ground, impressed by Zhang Wei's strength.

As for Zhang Wei, he had already collected the Summer Truffle Fungus and stored it in his soul storage device. His expression returned to that of a dignified headmaster as he explained to the crowd:

"The Mountain Boar King fought the green vine. I intervened slightly to drive it away. The vine's roots are here,it can't escape."

"Wang Li, I remember from the roster, your martial soul is the mutated Blue Silver Grass. Plant-type martial souls absorb plant-type soul rings. This century-old green vine belongs to you."

Fortune had come unexpectedly. Wang Li was thrilled. He had been anxious about obtaining a century-old soul ring, and now it had come to him.

Not only sixth-year graduates but also many teachers looked at Wang Li with envy and admiration.

The first soul ring being a century-old one promised limitless potential.

Wang Li didn't hesitate. He stepped forward and said,

"Thank you, Headmaster!"

He drew the short sword he had bought from the blacksmith, approached the wilted green vine, found its roots, and quickly cut it completely.

The vine struggled for a while, writhing, but eventually stopped moving.

Yellow energy surged and condensed into a soul ring. Wang Li looked at it,it was truly a century-old soul ring, not a mere ten-year one. He felt a small thrill inside.

He sat cross-legged, summoned his Blue Silver Grass martial soul, and called the yellow soul ring to him.

Sensing the connection, the soul ring flew to Wang Li and attached to his martial soul, transferring its powerful energy into him.

A century-old plant-type soul beast was the perfect match for his martial soul. This was truly a huge gain.

Thinking this, Wang Li closed his eyes and used the meditation technique he had learned from his panel. His soul power surged, devouring the soul energy from the century-old soul ring as if it were a dragon swallowing its prey.

The immense soul power of the century-old soul ring caused no pressure; it was completely subdued by his meditation, proving the overwhelming strength of this top-tier meditation technique.

At the same time, Zhang Wei was equally delighted. He had been extremely lucky to find three Summer Truffle Fungi,a huge gain.

Both Wang Li and Zhang Wei felt they had gained tremendously, though who gained more was hard to determine.
