Just as Jake swallowed his final bite of focaccia and set his fork down, a young boy—no older than twelve—timidly stepped away from his parents' table across the room. His face flushed red with nerves as he approached the booth.
Elias, who had been standing silently like a shadow near the entrance corridor, took a half-step forward, his massive frame instantly casting a warning shadow over the aisle. The kid stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes going wide with fear.
Jake caught the movement. He raised a single finger, signaling Elias to stand down. Elias stepped back instantly, his expression returning to stone.
"It's fine," Jake said softly, turning his gaze to the boy. "What's up, bud?"
"Are... are you Jake Rivers?" the kid squeaked, clutching the napkin tightly. "My older brother talks about you every single day. He says you're the smartest guy in the country. Can I... can I please take a picture with you?"
"Sure," Jake said evenly. "Bring your phone over."
