Harlan and Asher had grown into surprisingly good companions, though the balance between them was far from equal. Harlan did most of the talking—filling the silence with commentary, complaints, and the occasional joke—while Asher either ignored him entirely or simply stared ahead, lost in his own thoughts. The only time Asher spoke was when Harlan gave him that look—the one that silently accused him of being too distant, too detached, too… parasocial, as Harlan liked to put it.
"I know you're worried about your husband," Harlan said at one point, his tone more serious than usual, "but if we don't rest and find something to eat, I'm afraid we won't be much better than corpses."
