Rain tapped softly against the windshield as Melaina Seraphina Blackwood drove down the narrow forest road. The pavement had disappeared miles ago, replaced by gravel and packed dirt that twisted through towering pines.
Her phone's GPS had long since lost signal, which meant she was relying entirely on the printed directions the lawyer had given her. She glanced at them again on the passenger seat.
Blackwood Trust Property
County Road 18 — follow forest access road for 2.3 miles.
Her aunt had never mentioned owning land out here. Not once. The thought made her chest tighten.
A week ago, she had been studying for finals, planning her next semester. Then the phone call had come. Her aunt—her last living family member—was gone. A heart attack. Sudden. No warning.
Melaina swallowed and focused on the road.
The trees opened slightly as the forest path curved uphill. Through the branches, she finally saw it: a cabin.
It wasn't the tiny shack she had expected. The structure was old but sturdy, built from thick dark logs with a wide porch overlooking the trees. Ten acres, the lawyer had said. Her aunt had owned ten acres of forest—and never told her.
Melaina parked beside the cabin and stepped out into the cool evening air. Pine needles covered the ground, and the forest smelled clean and damp after the rain.
Quiet. Too quiet.
She climbed the porch steps slowly and unlocked the door. The hinges creaked as she pushed it open.
Inside was dim but well kept. Dusty, yes, but organized. Shelves lined one wall filled with books. A stone fireplace dominated the living room. Her aunt had clearly used this place.
Melaina walked inside, trailing her fingers along the wooden table in the center of the room.
"What were you doing out here?" she murmured.
Something on the table caught her attention: a small black metal box. It looked… strange. Too smooth. Too perfect.
Melaina leaned closer. The moment her fingers brushed the lid—
The world froze.
The air stopped moving. The sound of the forest vanished.
Then a translucent window appeared in front of her eyes.

Melaina stumbled backward, knocking into the chair behind her.
"What…?"
Another message appeared.

The air in the cabin felt suddenly colder.
Another window appeared.

Melaina blinked. Four choices. Four paths. Her mind raced. Assassin meant stealth. Healer meant survival. Mage meant power. Knight meant durability.
Her pulse thundered.
She hesitated, eyes lingering over the Mage icon. A faint pull in her chest—sharp, fluid, precise—drew her to it. Not fire, not ice… but something else. Something that blended extremes: light and darkness, warmth and shadow, striking together.
"Mage," she whispered.
The icon glowed.
Her mind turned to the next choice. "Knight," she said, almost automatically, sensing the need for defense.
Another icon pulsed. Only one remained. She exhaled and placed her final choice.
CLASS CORE FORMED

Configuration Recorded.
Before she could react, another message appeared.
Forerunner Portal Opening
All Forerunners must report immediately.
Time Remaining: 10 Minutes
A deep humming sound filled the cabin. Melaina turned toward the door. Outside, between the trees, the air was beginning to twist. Light spiraled into existence, forming a massive ring of shimmering energy in the forest clearing—a portal.
Her pulse thundered in her ears.
"Okay…", she whispered.
Four Forerunners. Five worlds. Earth's fate rested on them. And somehow, she was the first to move.
Melaina stepped toward the door. The glowing portal lit the forest like a second sunrise. She took one last breath. Then walked outside to meet it. Light consumed everything.
For a brief moment, Melaina felt weightless again—like she was being stretched across distance itself. The sensation was sharper this time, more focused, as if the portal wasn't just moving her… but placing her.
Then—
Reality snapped back.
Melaina stumbled forward onto polished stone. Warm air brushed against her skin, carrying the faint scent of incense and metal. Nothing like the cold, alien arena she had just left.
This place felt… alive.
She straightened slowly. And froze.
She stood in the center of an enormous throne room. Towering pillars of white and gold stretched toward a vaulted ceiling etched with glowing runes. Banners hung between them, each bearing a sigil—an intricate circular crest resembling interlocking rings.
At the far end of the hall stood a raised dais.
A throne.
And seated upon it—
Power.
Melaina felt it instantly. Not pressure. Not weight. Something deeper, almost like reality itself was aware of his presence.
The man on the throne was calm, composed, dressed in dark, regal attire. His gaze was steady, ancient… and focused directly on her.
Beside him stood a young woman, perhaps only a few years older than Melaina. Her posture was perfect, her expression sharp, her presence controlled—but with an air of welcoming curiosity rather than challenge.
The silence stretched.
Then the man spoke.
"Interesting."
Melaina didn't move. Didn't breathe. Her instincts screamed at her. Danger. Not immediate. Not hostile. But absolute.
The man leaned forward slightly, studying her.
"A Forerunner," he said. Not a question.
Melaina swallowed.
Before she could respond—
A system window appeared.

Another notification appeared.

Melaina exhaled slowly.
"So this is the trial…"
When she looked up again, the man on the throne was still watching her. Closely.
"Your system speaks to you," he said.
Melaina hesitated, then nodded.
"Yes."
The young woman beside him—Selena—stepped forward slightly, eyes gentle but sharp with interest.
"She's inexperienced," Selena said quietly, "but there's something… unusual about her. Something worth seeing grow."
Able's smile was faint. "Of course. Every Forerunner starts uncertain. That uncertainty… can be a gift."
He stood. The motion was simple. Effortless. But the room seemed to bend around him.
"Every Forerunner begins that way," he said. "But not all endure it." His eyes met hers. "Do you understand where you are?"
Melaina shook her head slightly.
"No."
Able nodded. "You stand in one of the first worlds ever inducted into the system. A world that survived. A world that earned its place."
Selena's gaze softened. "And now you've been… placed here. You'll learn quickly, I think."
Melaina winced slightly. "…Yeah."
Able gestured to the hall. "You have been given time. A rare gift. Use it well, Forerunner."
Melaina straightened. Focus. Determination. Five years to master her magic. To survive. To grow.
"Then I won't waste it," she said.
Able studied her a moment longer. Then nodded.
"Selena."
"Yes, Founder," Selena replied, voice calm and encouraging.
"See that our guest is… accommodated."
Selena glanced at Melaina again, curiosity flickering. "Come on, Forerunner. Let's see what kind of mage you are."
Melaina took one last look at Able Colosseum. Then followed.
