The masked traveler stopped at a distance that felt deliberate.
Not far enough to be harmless.
Not close enough to be easily struck without warning.
Dawn light spilled behind them, turning their silhouette pale and indistinct. The white lacquer mask caught the first sun like bone, and the purple star at the brow looked almost wet, as if it had just been painted.
The bell at their wrist chimed once.
Soft.
Polite.
Shen Lu's flame pulsed inside him, warm and alert, like it had lifted its head to listen.
His pendant warmed too.
Not as sharply as before, but enough that Shen Lu felt sick with it.
Yuan's voice slid into his mind, cold. Master… that mask is a seal.
Little Root rustled, leaves shaking faintly as if it recognized the same thing.
Master.
Pei Xun's paper strips hovered higher, forming a thin arc like a half-drawn bow. His voice was dry, but tight. "This is getting repetitive."
Gu Li's hands were already poised, needles hidden between fingers. "Don't speak first."
Xie Han's smile was faint and sharp. "I want to speak first."
Helian Feng didn't give anyone permission.
He stepped forward, sword still sheathed but aura sharp enough to be a blade.
"State your purpose," Helian Feng said.
The traveler tilted their head slightly, as if studying Helian Feng through the mask.
Then they lifted their hand and tapped the bell once with a finger.
Chime.
"Invitation," a voice said from behind the mask.
Not old.
Not young.
Carefully neutral, like it had been trained to reveal nothing.
"From who," Helian Feng asked.
The traveler's masked gaze shifted toward Shen Lu.
Shen Lu's throat tightened.
"From the one who sold you silence," the traveler said.
Tang Ye frowned. "We didn't buy anything from a mask seller."
The traveler's head tilted again. "Not the stall."
Pei Xun's eyes narrowed. "The contract cultivator."
The traveler didn't confirm. Didn't deny.
That was confirmation enough.
Gu Li's voice was stern. "What invitation."
The traveler's hand lowered slowly. "A meeting. For negotiation."
Xie Han laughed softly. "No."
The traveler's mask turned toward Xie Han. "Your opinion is not required."
Xie Han's smile widened. "I love that."
Helian Feng's aura flared colder. "We do not negotiate."
The traveler paused, then said evenly, "You already have. With the flame."
Shen Lu's heart thudded.
Helian Feng's gaze sharpened. "Careful."
The traveler continued without raising their voice. "The flame branded him. A contract without paper. A promise without words. It is… messy."
Shen Lu's fingers curled.
His wrist ached faintly where the brand lived under his qi, as if reacting to being named.
Pei Xun's voice went flat. "So you're here to tidy it."
"Not me," the traveler said. "I'm only a door."
Tang Ye whispered, uneasy, "A door to what."
The traveler's bell chimed once as their hand lifted again. "To the city beneath the city."
Underworld.
Shen Lu's stomach tightened.
The underground auction.
It was coming sooner than he'd wanted.
Helian Feng's voice was cold. "We are not going."
The traveler's head tilted. "You will."
Gu Li's eyes narrowed. "Threat."
"Fact," the traveler corrected calmly. "The price is rising."
Shen Lu swallowed. "For what."
The traveler's mask turned fully to him now. That purple star felt like an eye.
"For you," the traveler said.
Shen Lu's blood went cold.
Then the traveler added, voice unchanged, "And for the space you haven't admitted you carry."
Shen Lu froze.
The world narrowed to a single point.
Helian Feng's aura snapped outward like a blade drawn too fast.
Pei Xun's paper strips flared, ink lines brightening.
Gu Li's needles rose.
Tang Ye's fox bared its teeth, tail stiff as a spear.
Xie Han's smile vanished, replaced by something sharp and real.
Helian Feng's voice dropped into a lethal quiet. "Repeat that."
The traveler didn't flinch.
They tapped the bell once.
Chime.
Then they said, evenly, "Shen Lu. Don't."
Shen Lu's stomach dropped.
Because the voice behind the mask wasn't truly neutral anymore.
It knew his name like it had always owned it.
Yuan's voice hissed in Shen Lu's mind. Master… that's not a messenger. That's a leash.
Little Root's leaves shook, frightened now, not eager.
Master.
Shen Lu forced air into his lungs.
He didn't look at Helian Feng.
He couldn't.
Not when Helian Feng had just heard the word space from someone else's mouth.
Shen Lu's throat burned. "Who are you."
The traveler paused.
Then, slowly, they reached up and touched the edge of their mask.
Not removing it.
Just resting their fingers there, like they were reminding everyone: you don't get to see.
"I am nobody," the traveler said. "But I carry a message from Qin Rui."
Helian Feng's eyes narrowed. "Qin Rui."
The traveler nodded once.
Tang Ye's face tightened. "So he's involved."
"Yes," the traveler said. "He lied about his name because names are handles. You've learned that now."
Pei Xun's voice was dry and vicious. "We didn't need the lesson."
The traveler ignored him and spoke directly to Shen Lu.
"Qin Rui says," the traveler recited calmly, "that the flame is not a gift. It is a receipt."
Shen Lu's stomach turned.
"A receipt," Shen Lu repeated, voice hoarse.
The traveler's bell chimed softly as their wrist shifted. "Proof of purchase."
Helian Feng's aura surged again, lightning qi crackling at the edge of his restraint. "No one purchased him."
The traveler's head tilted. "Not yet."
Silence hit like a slap.
The morning wind moved through grass.
Somewhere far off, a bird called once, bright and stupid, like it didn't know what was happening.
Shen Lu's flame pulsed, warm and uneasy.
The traveler extended their hand.
In their palm was a thin black slip of lacquered jade.
No writing visible.
Just a faint purple star pressed into it like a stamp.
"A token," the traveler said. "If you come to the auction, you will be allowed to enter."
Gu Li's voice was stern. "If we don't."
The traveler's voice stayed calm. "Then others will enter your life instead."
Shen Lu's throat tightened.
It was a threat shaped like courtesy.
Helian Feng's voice was flat. "We refuse."
The traveler's mask turned toward him. "You can refuse. But Shen Lu cannot outrun a contract cultivator once his true value is known."
Helian Feng's eyes narrowed. "We'll kill them first."
The traveler's bell chimed once, amused. "Then come to the auction. It's where they gather."
Xie Han's smile returned, sharp and delighted. "Now we're talking."
Gu Li shot him a look. "No."
Xie Han shrugged. "It's efficient."
Tang Ye's hands clenched. "They'll trap us."
Pei Xun's eyes stayed hard. "They already are."
Shen Lu stared at the black token.
He didn't want it.
The pendant warmed, faint and hungry, like it wanted the star stamp.
Little Root rustled, confused and frightened.
Yuan's voice was cold. Master… don't touch it with your skin.
Shen Lu exhaled slowly.
He didn't reach out.
Helian Feng did.
Not to take it.
To strike it away.
His sword came out in a flash of lightning qi and cut the air between them.
The token didn't fall.
It hovered.
As if the air held it up.
As if Helian Feng had cut water.
The traveler didn't move.
Their bell chimed once.
"Violence is also a signature," the traveler said softly. "Qin Rui will be pleased."
Helian Feng's eyes went colder than Shen Lu had ever seen. "Tell Qin Rui—"
The traveler cut in, polite. "He already knows what you will say."
Then, without haste, the traveler stepped backward.
One step.
Two.
And then the morning mist rose in a thin wave over the hillcrest, and the traveler was simply… gone.
No running.
No retreat.
Just absence.
The token dropped at Shen Lu's feet with a soft click.
Pei Xun swore.
Gu Li's voice went tight, stern. "Don't touch it."
Tang Ye looked sick. "What do we do."
Xie Han's eyes gleamed. "We go."
Helian Feng's gaze stayed on the empty hillcrest, jaw tight.
Then he looked at Shen Lu.
And Shen Lu felt it—Helian Feng's awareness turning inward, sharp as a blade finding a hidden seam.
The space.
Helian Feng had heard it.
He hadn't asked yet.
But the question was now alive between them, breathing.
Shen Lu's throat burned.
He stared down at the token with the purple star.
A key.
A lock.
A leash.
And it was sitting there like destiny, waiting to be picked up.
