Helian Feng moved first.
Not a charge. Not a strike.
A single step that put his body slightly in front of Shen Lu's without making it look like protection.
It was control disguised as positioning.
Shen Lu hated that he understood it.
He also didn't move away.
Qin Rui watched them with calm amusement, as if Helian Feng's aura was weather and not a threat. He leaned against the pillar, hands relaxed, cloak draped like he'd chosen comfort over armor.
No mask.
In this place, that meant either power, permission, or madness.
Pei Xun's voice was dry and tight. "He's really here."
Gu Li's jaw clenched. "Don't speak."
Tang Ye swallowed hard. His fox's tail went rigid, and in Shen Lu's mind it hissed, Bite him.
Xie Han's fan clicked once in his hand, a quiet, eager sound.
Helian Feng's voice cut through the plaza, cold and clear. "Qin Rui."
Qin Rui's smile widened by a hair. "So you learned the name."
Helian Feng's gaze was ice. "You lied."
Qin Rui shrugged lightly. "Of course. Names are handles. You of all people should appreciate that."
Shen Lu's flame warmed faintly at Qin Rui's voice, like it recognized the same ugly thread that had woven through the fracture and the token and the star masks.
Shen Lu forced his breath even.
Qin Rui's eyes slid past Helian Feng and landed on Shen Lu.
They didn't linger on Shen Lu's mask.
They lingered on Shen Lu's posture.
On the way Shen Lu held himself too carefully, like someone carrying something inside that could bite.
"Your flame settled," Qin Rui said softly. "Good. I'd be disappointed if it ate you before we spoke."
Helian Feng's aura flared, lightning qi tightening at the edge of control. "You don't speak about him."
Qin Rui's smile didn't change. "Then don't bring him to places where people speak."
Pei Xun muttered under his breath, "I hate him."
Qin Rui's gaze flicked to Pei Xun. "And you are?"
Pei Xun's mouth tightened. "Not your business."
Qin Rui chuckled, amused. "Smart."
Gu Li's voice was stern and flat. "What do you want."
Qin Rui's eyes returned to Shen Lu. "A conversation. With the one who 'fell into' a life that wasn't his."
Shen Lu's stomach dropped.
His throat went dry.
Tang Ye stared, face paling. "What is he talking about."
Pei Xun's paper strips trembled faintly, like his ink wanted to leap out and strangle someone.
Helian Feng's gaze sharpened dangerously. "You don't know that."
Qin Rui's smile turned private again. "I know enough."
Shen Lu's flame warmed, reacting to the spike of emotion. Shen Lu forced himself calm, but the warmth lingered under his ribs like a warning: don't lose control here.
Qin Rui straightened from the pillar and took one step forward.
The underworld plaza didn't react.
No guard stepped in.
No star-mask messenger appeared.
People simply… shifted their bodies slightly, making space.
Permission.
That was what no mask meant.
Qin Rui spoke softly, as if confiding. "This auction is neutral ground. Nobody draws blood in the open unless they want to pay for it."
He glanced at the sign: Violence is priced separately.
Then back at Helian Feng, smile faint. "You can't kill me here."
Helian Feng's eyes were lightning-dark. "I can kill you outside."
Qin Rui nodded as if that was reasonable. "Yes. Try."
Shen Lu felt his fingers curl.
He wanted to speak.
He wanted to demand answers.
But Helian Feng had told him not to speak first, and Shen Lu knew why now. Words here were hooks. Questions were permission.
So Shen Lu kept his mouth shut.
Qin Rui watched him, amused, as if he could see the restraint like a ribbon tied too tight.
"Good discipline," Qin Rui said. "Did your righteous disciple train you."
Helian Feng's voice was cold. "Speak your purpose."
Qin Rui's gaze flicked toward the black silk curtain of the auction hall. "The auction is about to begin. If we speak here, too many ears will pretend not to listen."
He looked back at Shen Lu. "Walk with me."
Gu Li's voice snapped, stern. "No."
Xie Han's smile sharpened. "Yes."
Everyone ignored Xie Han.
Qin Rui lifted one hand, palm up, showing he carried no weapon. "I'm not taking him. I'm offering him the chance to ask before someone else answers for him."
Shen Lu's chest tightened.
That was the worst part.
It sounded almost… fair.
Helian Feng's voice cut sharp. "He doesn't go anywhere alone."
Qin Rui's eyes glinted. "Then bring your whole little pack."
Tang Ye bristled. His fox's tail lashed once.
Pei Xun muttered, "I'm going to bind his mouth shut."
Qin Rui's smile widened. "Try. I'll charge you per word."
Gu Li stepped closer to Shen Lu, blocking him with his shoulder. "We don't negotiate."
Qin Rui's gaze slid to Gu Li, then back to Shen Lu. "You already are. You came. You took the token. You stepped into my city. Now you're standing here with your flame and your secret space pulsing like a beacon."
Shen Lu's pendant warmed faintly under his robe, as if offended at being called out.
Little Root rustled, uneasy.
Yuan's voice hissed in Shen Lu's mind. Master… this man provokes. He wants emotion. He wants fire.
Shen Lu swallowed hard and forced his face still.
Qin Rui leaned in just a fraction, lowering his voice so only Shen Lu and Helian Feng could hear.
"I'm not the highest bidder," Qin Rui murmured. "I'm the one who decides what gets put on the table."
Helian Feng's aura surged.
Shen Lu's heart slammed.
Qin Rui continued, voice soft as a bell, "Today's items include rare cores, a sealed weapon, a contract-laced talisman set…"
His eyes narrowed, smile turning thin. "And a rumor. About an alchemist with a star-flame and a portable space."
Shen Lu went cold.
Helian Feng's voice dropped into something lethal. "You started it."
Qin Rui's smile returned, unbothered. "I spread it. Someone else will sell it."
Pei Xun's voice was dry behind them. "He's enjoying this."
Qin Rui's gaze flicked to Pei Xun again, amused. "Of course. The underworld is theater."
Then Qin Rui stepped back, turning smoothly toward a side corridor draped with dark cloth. "Come. Five minutes. No contracts. No witnesses. Just words."
Gu Li's voice was stern. "Words are witnesses."
Qin Rui laughed softly. "True."
He looked at Shen Lu again. "Do you want to keep being hunted by people who don't even know why you're valuable. Or do you want to know what they think you are."
Shen Lu's throat tightened.
He didn't want to go.
He also didn't want to stay ignorant while everyone else set his price.
Shen Lu finally spoke, voice steady and quiet, breaking the rule because he chose to.
"Five minutes," Shen Lu said.
Helian Feng's head snapped toward him.
Shen Lu met his gaze.
A boundary.
A decision.
Helian Feng's jaw tightened. "I'm coming."
Qin Rui's smile widened. "Of course you are."
He turned and walked toward the side corridor like he'd already won.
Shen Lu took one step after him, then another, his group closing in around him instinctively—Gu Li stern at his shoulder, Pei Xun tense, Tang Ye pale but determined, Xie Han amused and ready, Helian Feng cold as a drawn sword.
Above them, under the stone ceiling, the underworld murmured like a beast settling its body before feeding.
And somewhere behind the black silk curtain, the auction bell chimed once.
