Chapter 29 - Episode 28 - The Man at the End of the Hallway

Seo-yeon noticed him because her body reacted before her mind did.

A sudden tightness in her chest.

A sharp awareness of the air.

A small instinctive step slowing her pace.

It was a normal school morning.

Students crowded the hallway, laughing too loudly, shoving each other playfully, complaining about homework. A teacher scolded someone for running. Lockers slammed. The world felt familiar.

Safe.

Ordinary.

And yet—

Something in Seo-yeon's instincts screamed that the ordinary had been interrupted.

She stopped walking.

Not completely.

Just enough to look down the hallway.

That was when she saw him.

He stood near the end of the corridor, speaking quietly with one of the staff members. His posture was calm, controlled, and too still compared to the chaos around him. He wasn't dressed like a teacher. Not dressed like a parent either.

He looked… professional.

The kind of professional that didn't belong in a high school.

Seo-yeon's fingers tightened around her bag strap.

He wasn't doing anything threatening.

He wasn't raising his voice.

He wasn't even looking in her direction.

But something about him made her skin go cold.

A memory surfaced.

Not clear.

Not complete.

But sharp enough to make her stomach twist.

A man like that…

A man with that posture—

calm, patient, and predatory in the way he didn't need to show it—

belonged to her first life.

To the world after tragedy.

To the world that pushed until people broke.

Seo-yeon took a slow breath.

Don't panic.

Don't assume.

But her instincts didn't listen.

The man turned slightly as the staff member spoke, shifting his weight, glancing down the hallway—

and his eyes met hers.

Seo-yeon stopped breathing.

For a fraction of a second, his expression didn't change.

But she saw it.

A flicker.

A pause.

Not recognition like he knew her name.

Recognition like he saw something unusual.

Something that didn't fit.

Like he was marking her face for later.

Seo-yeon's heartbeat thudded painfully in her ears.

She forced herself to look away first, pretending she hadn't been staring.

But her body remained rigid.

Her legs felt heavy.

She could still feel his gaze, even after she looked away.

Her friend bumped into her shoulder lightly.

"Hey," her friend said, laughing, "why'd you stop?"

Seo-yeon blinked.

Her mouth was dry.

"I thought I saw someone," she said quietly.

Her friend followed her gaze.

"Who?"

Seo-yeon hesitated.

If she pointed him out, would he notice?

Would he confirm he was watching?

She swallowed.

"Never mind."

She started walking again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Not running.

Running would draw attention.

She walked toward her classroom with her head slightly lowered, like she was just another student lost in thought.

But inside, her mind was racing.

Why was he here?

Who was he?

Did he come for a student?

A teacher?

Or—

Her father?

A cold thought slid into her mind.

What if this wasn't about school at all?

What if this was simply the easiest place to find information about her family?

Because schools held records.

Names.

Addresses.

Parents' contact numbers.

Schedules.

Her stomach twisted.

No.

No, she was overthinking.

But she couldn't afford not to.

Overthinking was safer than ignorance.

Ignorance was what killed her first life.

She reached her classroom door and paused, forcing herself to breathe normally.

She entered the room.

Took her seat.

Opened her notebook.

Tried to act normal.

But her hand was trembling slightly.

Her eyes kept drifting toward the window.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the thought that someone from her father's debt had stepped into her world in a new way.

The teacher began the lesson.

Words filled the room.

But Seo-yeon heard none of them.

She only heard the sound of danger settling into place.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Just like fate.

At lunch, she forced herself to walk past the hallway again.

Just once.

Just to confirm.

She moved with casual steps, pretending she had nowhere specific to go.

Her heart pounded.

Her palms were slightly damp.

Then she saw him again.

Still there.

Now speaking with someone else.

A different staff member.

Still calm.

Still controlled.

Still too steady.

He wasn't lost.

He wasn't waiting for a child.

He was searching.

And the thought chilled her.

He turned slightly again.

Their eyes met again.

This time, he smiled faintly.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

A small professional curve of the lips.

A smile that said:

I see you.

I remember you.

And I will come back.

Seo-yeon's body went cold.

She forced herself to keep walking.

She didn't look back.

But she knew something now that she hadn't known yesterday.

The threat wasn't just at her home.

It was finding her everywhere.

And she didn't know what it wanted yet.

That was the worst part.

Not the fear.

The uncertainty.

Because uncertainty meant the future was no longer just unknown.

It was actively being shaped by someone else.

Someone watching.

Someone patient.

Someone who didn't need rain to destroy a life.

Someone who could do it under clear skies.
