Chapter 60 - Episode 57 - The Man Before the System

Mr. Han didn't look like someone who had ever been weak.

That was what made it so difficult to imagine, yet weakness was exactly how systems recruited loyalty. It wasn't through strength; it was through survival.

Seo-yeon sat across from him at a small café near the station—a place that was public, neutral, and controlled. He hadn't questioned why she'd asked to meet, nor had he refused, which meant he wanted something from this encounter, too.

"You've been inside the system longer than my father," she said quietly.

He stirred his coffee, a deliberate and unnecessary movement. "Yes."

She watched him carefully. "Why?"

He didn't answer immediately, because truth required selection rather than revelation. "Because I survived," he said finally.

Her chest tightened—not because of what he said, but because of everything he left out. Survival wasn't passive. It required submission, adaptation, and a total transformation of oneself.

"You had debt," she said. It wasn't a question, but an observation.

He didn't deny it, and he didn't confirm it. He simply said, "I had a choice."

The silence that followed was heavy and unavoidable. "What kind of choice?" she asked.

He looked at her then—really looked at her. He didn't see her as a debtor's daughter or a mere variable in an equation. He saw her as someone standing near the very same edge he once had.

"The kind that determines whether you disappear," he said quietly.
