Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 — Drifting Between Tides

Ren flew steadily across the open sea, his nine tails swaying with the rhythm of the wind. Shakky remained asleep on his back, her breathing calm and even despite the chaos they had escaped. The horizon stretched endlessly before them, painted in deep blues and fading smoke from distant God Valley.

He deliberately slowed his speed.

There was no longer a need to rush, and his body was still synchronizing with the Mythical Zoan coursing through his veins. Every second in this form felt new, as if he were learning to inhabit another existence layered over his own.

As they flew above the ocean, Ren extended his awareness downward.

With a subtle pulse of will, telekinetic force rippled across the water. Several fish burst upward from the sea, suspended helplessly in midair. Their silver scales glinted under the sun as they flailed.

Ren opened his jaws slightly.

A controlled stream of flame ignited from his mouth, precise and measured. The fish were cooked midair within seconds, their skin crisping perfectly without burning.

He swallowed them in a single bite.

The fish dissolved almost instantly once inside him, energy dispersing through his muscles like fuel poured into a furnace. His stomach absorbed everything efficiently, as though the Kitsune body processed nourishment differently from a human's.

He repeated the process several times.

Fish rose from the ocean in clusters, suspended by invisible force, seared by foxfire, and devoured in single gulps. Each meal strengthened him slightly, subtle but noticeable growth settling into his limbs.

After some time, he stopped.

A comfortable fullness settled in his abdomen.

As he continued flying, he became more aware of the changes occurring within him. His physique subtly expanded, his fur thickening, his stamina deepening like a well without bottom.

"My body is still catching up with the Mythical Zoan," he murmured internally. "It's adapting."

Far ahead, a dark shape cut across the waves.

Ren narrowed his eyes.

A pirate ship.

The black flag fluttered lazily in the wind, unaware of the approaching fox in the sky. Ren descended slightly, his tails shifting as telekinetic force gathered once more.

With a casual flick of his will, an invisible wave crashed onto the deck.

Sailors were thrown screaming into the sea as if struck by a storm. Weapons clattered uselessly across the wood. Within seconds, the ship was empty.

Ren landed softly on the deck.

The wood creaked beneath his weight, but held.

He exhaled slowly and lowered himself onto the deck, resting in full beast form. Shakky remained asleep on his back, completely undisturbed by the violent takeover.

"Damn," Ren muttered internally. "First time resting as a fox. It feels weird."

His tails adjusted slightly for comfort.

He extended his telekinesis again, searching through the ship's cabins. Maps, charts, and scrolls floated out from below deck and hovered before him.

He stared at them.

"I don't know much about maps."

After a brief pause, he flicked them aside carelessly.

"Well, since I can't move properly right now, let's train some Devil Fruit powers."

With precise mental control, he began pulling items from the kitchen below deck. Vegetables, seasoning jars, pots, pans, knives—everything floated upward in a neat procession.

Shakky stirred faintly but didn't wake.

Ren focused carefully.

A knife began slicing vegetables midair, each cut clean and uniform. Carrots diced into cubes, onions separated into perfect layers, herbs finely chopped with impossible precision.

He levitated fish and meat beside the vegetables.

Flames ignited from his mouth again, but this time controlled and gentle. A pot hovered above the fire, ingredients dropping inside one by one.

Seasoning followed.

Salt sprinkled in controlled streams. Spices rotated midair before falling into the simmering broth. The scent slowly began spreading across the deck.

Minutes later, steam rose in thick, aromatic spirals.

Ren prepared multiple portions, adjusting flavor instinctively as he tasted small amounts telekinetically. The smell of perfectly cooked fish stew filled the entire ship.

A low rumbling sound interrupted the quiet.

Ren's ears twitched.

The sound had not come from him.

Behind him, Shakky's stomach growled loudly.

She was awake.

Ren's mouth twitched slightly.

"You shameless woman," he said dryly. "You could have said you were awake. Do you know how long I've been in this form?"

Shakky slowly lifted her head, still sitting comfortably on his back.

She laughed softly.

"Well, can't help it. Your fur is so soft and comfortable, I just didn't want to wake up."

Ren's eye twitched again.

"This woman…"

He attempted to use telekinesis to gently lift her off his back. The invisible force wrapped around her form.

Her Armament Haki flared instantly.

The telekinetic hold shattered like glass.

Ren blinked.

Right.

If someone's Haki was stronger, Devil Fruit abilities weakened against them.

"So you're going to step down or what?" he asked flatly.

Shakky smiled, her voice turning slightly pleading.

"Come on, just a few m—"

Ren didn't wait for her to finish.

In an instant, he shifted back into human form.

Shakky fell unceremoniously onto the wooden deck.

"Hey!" she snapped, rubbing her side.

Ren didn't even spare her a glance.

He walked calmly toward the food and sat cross-legged on the deck. Steam rose between them as he began eating, savoring the balanced flavors he had crafted.

"It's good," he muttered approvingly.

Shakky stared at him, speechless for a moment.

Then she moved closer without asking and picked up a bowl.

She began eating as well.

Despite her hunger, she maintained elegant composure—each movement refined, posture straight, expression controlled. Still, she matched his pace surprisingly well.

"Being a prize wasn't fun," she said quietly between bites. "They kept me hungry so I wouldn't have the strength to escape."

Ren paused briefly.

"Figures," he replied.

After finishing several bowls, warmth settled in his stomach again. Energy flowed smoothly through him, no longer raw but controlled.

Shakky wiped her lips lightly.

"Hey," she said casually. "Did you have that sun tattoo before? On your forehead?"

Ren frowned.

"What tattoo?"

He stood and walked toward a small mirror mounted near the captain's quarters. Staring back at him was his own reflection—messy hair, tired eyes, and on his forehead, a radiant sun-shaped mark faintly glowing.

He touched it lightly.

"Maybe it's because of the Mythical Zoan?"

Shakky stepped closer, examining it carefully.

"Can you change it?" she asked.

Ren focused inward, attempting to alter it.

Nothing happened.

"Nope. I can't."

Shakky shrugged.

"Well, whatever. It's just a tattoo. What can it even do?"

Ren gave a small shrug in return.

"Probably nothing."

But deep down, he wasn't so sure.

Days turned into weeks as they drifted upon the captured ship. Ren practiced controlling telekinesis daily—lifting heavier objects, refining precision, maintaining sustained flight for shorter bursts.

Shakky observed more than she spoke.

Eventually, the massive red cliffs of Reverse Mountain rose before them, towering like a natural gate carved by gods.

Ren blinked.

"Damn… so the ship was heading to the Grand Line?"

Shakky nodded calmly.

"Yes. If you pass that, you enter the Grand Line. But I don't think you know how to navigate through Reverse Mountain properly."

Ren stared at the roaring currents ahead.

"Nope," he admitted. "But this ship has small boats."

He pointed toward the deck.

"Jump in one. Take whatever you need from the ship."

They gathered supplies—food, water barrels, navigation tools, spare clothing, rope, and weapons. Once ready, they stepped into a smaller vessel.

Ren shifted into his Beast-Human form.

Fox ears emerged, nine tails manifesting behind him, and golden-silver clouds formed beneath the small boat. The vessel lifted gently into the air.

Shakky gripped the side.

"You're bypassing the currents entirely," she observed.

"Flying is easier than sailing," Ren replied.

They ascended steadily, soaring above the roaring water streams of Reverse Mountain. The sea crashed violently below, currents twisting like serpents, but they remained untouched.

Wind howled around them.

At the peak, Ren paused briefly, looking forward at the vast ocean stretching beyond.

The Grand Line.

Unpredictable weather. Monster seas. Stronger pirates.

A dangerous world.

Ren smiled faintly.

"Let's see what this era has in store."

With that, the clouds surged forward.

Ren and Shakky crossed into the Grand Line together, leaving the ordinary seas behind.
