Chapter 30 – Beneath Falling Petals

The afternoon was calm in Wano Country, the breeze carrying pale sakura petals across the courtyard hills. Ren lay back against the trunk of a great cherry blossom tree, one arm resting lazily while the other supported Yamato's head in his lap. The world felt uncharacteristically peaceful.

Yamato had fallen asleep mid-complaint about training schedules, her kanabo resting nearby. Her white hair with faint green hues shimmered under the filtered sunlight, and her steady breathing softened the sharp edges of Ren's usual vigilance.

Then a booming laugh shattered the quiet.

"Wororororo! You really know how to relax."

Ren's eye twitched before he even looked up. "Yoo, what's wrong?" he muttered, voice low. "And keep your voice down. She's sleeping."

He glared sharply at Kaido. "Did this bastard suddenly become blind?" Ren thought irritably.

Yamato stirred at the noise, rolling slightly and adjusting her head more comfortably against Ren's lap. She nuzzled closer unconsciously, seeking warmth as she slept.

Kaido's mouth twitched at the sight. For a brief second, doubt flickered across his face. Maybe leaving Yamato with this man hadn't been the most rational decision.

"So," Ren said quietly, fingers absentmindedly stroking Yamato's hair, "why did you come?"

Kaido snorted, folding his massive arms. "You stopped supplying weapons. The Government officials are here to buy weapons and seastone."

Ren didn't even sit up. He simply waved his hand dismissively. "Tell them you stopped making them. And tell King to watch for any CP spy infiltration."

Kaido grunted in acknowledgment. Ren was his captain now; weapons meant little compared to what they were building. The old era of endless arms trading was fading, replaced by something far more calculated.

"Oh," Ren added calmly, "and stop recruiting pirates from outside. Recruit from Wano instead."

Kaido narrowed his eyes. "From Wano?"

"Yes," Ren replied evenly. "There are strong samurai here. We don't need too many cannon fodders."

Kaido hummed thoughtfully. Ren continued, voice steady but confident. "We have you and me—two Emperor-level fighters. Shakky is Admiral level now. Toki, King, and Queen are at least Admiral-candidate level."

Kaido's brow lifted slightly.

"And don't forget the Red Scabbards," Ren continued. "The Minks when they arrive. Samurai like Hyogoro and Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Wano alone is a fortress of blades."

Kaido nodded slowly. When he mentally calculated it, their forces were terrifyingly balanced. Strength layered upon loyalty rather than fear.

Then something in Ren's words caught up to him.

"Wait," Kaido said slowly, eyes narrowing. "What do you mean Shakky?"

A massive question mark might as well have appeared above his head.

Ren blinked once. "Oh. I didn't tell you?"

Kaido stared.

"Shakky's my girl," Ren said casually. "You know. The one who was the reason God Valley happened. We escaped together."

Kaido froze completely. "Wait. You were on God Valley?"

His gaze sharpened. "Then why do you look like you're still in your twenties?"

Ren sighed, adjusting his position slightly to keep Yamato comfortable. "It happened like this. We escaped God Valley and stayed on an island for a year or two. But something was wrong with that island."

Kaido leaned closer. "Wrong how?"

"Time distortion," Ren replied calmly. "When we finally left to train elsewhere, we ran into Whitebeard. By then, eight years had passed outside."

Kaido's eyes widened.

"After that," Ren continued, "I fought him. Then we made a deal. I wouldn't touch Wano for ten years."

Kaido let out a low whistle. "You fought Whitebeard?"

"Yes."

"And survived?"

Ren smirked faintly. "Obviously."

He went on, voice steady. "After that, Shakky, Toki, and I came to Wano. Toki used her Devil Fruit to send us ten years forward. Shakky left afterward to get the Goro Goro no Mi."

Kaido's expression turned unreadable. He processed the absurd journey in silence.

This man had survived God Valley. Manipulated time. Fought Whitebeard. Claimed Shakky's heart. And now quietly reorganized Wano's future.

Even legends like Roger, Rocks, Whitebeard, and Shiki had never won Shakky over. Kaido himself had once tried. None succeeded.

Now she was Ren's. And she had eaten the Goro Goro no Mi.

"She's Admiral level by now," Kaido muttered under his breath.

Ren shrugged. "Probably."

Kaido's mind raced. Without even trying, Ren had gathered forces nearly comparable to the old Rocks D. Xebec crew. But unlike the Rocks Pirates, this foundation wasn't built on ego and rivalry. It was built on purpose.

Rocks had hunted the seas collecting monsters. Ren hadn't even begun recruiting seriously, yet strength gravitated toward him naturally.

"If he actually tried," Kaido thought grimly, "he could surpass Rocks."

More importantly, this crew wasn't divided. If Ren gave the order, the samurai of Wano would fight to the death for him—not out of fear, but loyalty.

"Wororororo," Kaido suddenly laughed, the sound rolling across the sakura fields. "Looks like I got quite the captain."

Ren glanced up lazily. "You're only realizing that now?"

Kaido smirked. "Don't get cocky."

"I don't need to," Ren replied calmly. "You're already convinced."

Yamato stirred again at the rumbling laughter. Her eyes fluttered open briefly. "What are you two whispering about?"

Kaido blinked. "Whispering?"

"You're loud," Yamato muttered sleepily, then glared at her father. "Go do your work."

Kaido's eye twitched again. "You brat."

Ren chuckled quietly, fingers still brushing through her hair. "See? Even half-asleep she outranks you."

Kaido crossed his arms. "She gets that from you."

"Wrong," Ren replied. "She gets it from wanting freedom."

Kaido didn't respond immediately. The wind shifted, petals falling between them like silent witnesses.

For the first time in years, Kaido felt something unfamiliar. Not conquest. Not ambition. Not rage.

Stability.

"You're planning something bigger," Kaido said quietly.

Ren's gaze drifted toward the horizon. "I am."

"Bigger than Wano?"

"Yes."

Kaido studied him carefully. "And what's that?"

Ren's voice lowered, steady and unwavering. "A land where no one is hunted for what they are. A place strong enough that the World Government can't touch it."

Kaido's grin slowly widened. "You're insane."

Ren smirked faintly. "Probably."

Kaido turned away, satisfied for now. "Don't fail."

Ren's eyes hardened slightly. "I won't."

As Kaido walked off, his heavy footsteps fading into the distance, Yamato shifted once more and mumbled, "Did he leave?"

"Yes," Ren replied softly.

"Good," she muttered, curling closer again.

Ren looked up at the sakura branches overhead, petals drifting down in quiet defiance of the world beyond Wano's borders.

Storms were coming. Destiny was shifting. Empires would rise and fall.

But for now, beneath falling petals, he allowed himself a moment of peace.
