Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Mansion.

The mansion stood high above Syrup Village, almost like a symbol of peace.

White walls.

Open gardens.

Curtains dancing in the warm wind.

From the outside, it looked untouched by the cruelty of the world.

But Kael knew better.

He could feel it.

Not chaos.

Not bloodlust.

Something worse.

Patience.

He slowed his steps as he and Usopp climbed the hill.

"It's controlled," Kael said quietly.

Usopp glanced at him."What is?"

"The intent inside the mansion."

Kael didn't dramatize it.He didn't exaggerate.

He simply stated it calmly.

"Not random. Not reckless. Someone who has waited… a very long time."

Usopp tried to scoff.

Tried.

But the words stuck in his throat.

Because deep down, he had felt something too.

He had simply never had proof.

"How long has Kaya been sick?" Kael asked.

"…Three years."

"Has she improved?"

"…No."

"Has the butler limited visitors?"

Usopp froze.

"…Yeah."

"Has he slowly taken more control of the house?"

Silence followed.

Usopp clenched his jaw.

He had noticed.

He had just convinced himself he was overthinking it.

Kael looked at him.

"You're not crazy."

Those three words struck harder than anything else.

For the first time, someone didn't treat him like a liar.

Usopp straightened slightly.

"…So what's the plan?"

Kael's eyes shifted toward the estate.

"We go inside. I request to buy a ship."

"And?"

"You quietly remove anything that lets him call for backup."

Usopp blinked.

"…Backup?"

"If he's who I think he is," Kael replied calmly, "he won't be alone."

Usopp swallowed.

Then slowly grinned.

"Leave it to Captain Usopp."

Inside the Mansion

They were welcomed warmly by Merry.

Moments later, the butler arrived.

Kuro.

Polished.

Composed.

Glasses glinting in the light.

Kael felt it the moment their eyes met.

Stillness.

No wasted emotion.

Breathing regulated.

Posture perfectly balanced.

This wasn't a servant.

This was someone who knew how to kill.

Kuro adjusted his glasses slightly.

For three years, everything here had been predictable.

Today—

Something felt different.

That swordsman's gaze was too aware.

Not suspicious.

Not aggressive.

Aware.

Like wind brushing across a blade.

It was… irritating.

Kaya:

When Kaya entered the room, the atmosphere softened.

Pale.

Gentle.

Fragile in appearance.

But her eyes—

Her eyes were intelligent.

Observant.

"It's a pleasure, Miss Kaya. I'm Kael Sylvarion, a traveler hoping to purchase a ship here," Kael said politely.

She smiled warmly.

"Welcome."

Kael bowed lightly.

Inside his mind—

(So this is her.)

(Three years of slow poisoning… and she still smiles.)

Her breath caught.

She looked around the room.

No one had spoken.

Her gaze returned to him.

His face remained calm. Polite. Composed.

(You really deserve to bleed for this.)

Her heart skipped.

Klahadore stood behind her.

Perfect posture.

Perfect mask.

But Kaya's mind was racing.

Why could she hear that?

(If he moves tonight, I'll stop him before he reaches her door.)

Her pulse quickened.

That voice—

Calm.

Measured.

Not loud.

Not emotional.

Just certain.

She stared at Kael.

His expression hadn't changed.

Yet somehow—

That calm certainty made her believe him.

Not his strength.

Not his title.

Just the way his thoughts didn't waver.

There was no doubt in them.

No hesitation.

Whoever he believed the threat was—

He had already decided to stand in front of it.

And for someone who had felt alone for three years…

That certainty felt like sunlight.

Usopp's Move:

Later, while Kael distracted Klahadore with discussions about ships—

Usopp moved.

Loudly at first.

Boastful.

"I'll show my associate the grounds!"

He exaggerated gestures.

Talked too much.

Played the fool.

But behind the performance—

He was calculating.

Earlier, Kael had told him quietly:

"Check the study. Desk compartment. Window signal. Servant corridor."

Usopp didn't know how Kael guessed.

But he trusted him.

Inside the study, Usopp's playful grin disappeared.

He found it.

A concealed flare launcher hidden inside a drawer mechanism.

Not something a normal butler would own.

Carefully, he removed the ignition cord.

Then he "accidentally" knocked over a decorative piece to mask the noise.

Later—

He discovered a second communication device near the servant corridor.

A small Den Den Mushi, tucked discreetly behind paneling.

Usopp clipped the transmission cord cleanly.

"Oops," he muttered dryly.

By the time he returned to the garden—

Every external signal route was disabled.

When Kael's eyes briefly met his—

Usopp gave the smallest nod.

Kael didn't smile.

But internally—

(Good work.)

And Usopp—though he couldn't hear it—

Felt proud.

Garden Conversation:

Evening settled gently over the estate.

Golden light filtered through the trees.

The air smelled faintly of flowers.

Kaya sat across from Kael at a small garden table. Usopp had wandered off "to patrol," which mostly meant pacing dramatically around the perimeter.

"You travel alone?" she asked softly.

"For now," Kael replied.

Inside his thoughts—

(She looks fragile… but it's not illness.)

(It's controlled. Measured.)

(Three years of poisoning… that bastard.)

Her breath caught.

She glanced around.

No one had spoken.

Kael blinked.

"…Is something wrong?"

She stared at him.

"You… didn't just say anything?"

He frowned slightly.

"No?"

A crease formed between his brows.

(Why does she look like that?)

(Unless…)

(Has the dosage started affecting her hearing too?)

She swallowed.

"You really didn't say anything just now?"

Now he was confused.

"…About what?"

Her heart began to race.

Because she had heard it clearly.

That voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

Angry—

But not reckless.

Angry for her.

She tested it, whispering softly—

"Why would you care?"

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"Care about what?"

Inside his mind—

(She shouldn't have to live like this.)

(Someone should have protected her sooner.)

Kaya's fingers trembled.

Her eyes widened.

He froze.

"…Why are you looking at me like that?"

She stared at him.

Not afraid.

Not exactly.

But shaken.

He shifted slightly in his seat.

(Did I mutter something?)

"…Did I say something out loud?" he asked, genuinely uncertain.

She hesitated.

"…No."

Now it was his turn to pause.

Because that didn't make sense.

Her reaction had been too precise.

Too immediate.

His Observation Haki spread outward instinctively.

Nothing strange.

Just wind.

Just her heartbeat—slightly fast.

He relaxed again.

Probably stress.

"You should get more fresh air," he said calmly. "Medicine isn't always the solution."

Inside his thoughts—

(She's not going to be sick for much longer.)

(I'll deal with the poison after I deal with him.)

Her eyes softened.

He truly didn't know.

He wasn't manipulating her.

Wasn't testing her.

Wasn't projecting anything intentionally.

He was simply… thinking.

And somehow, she could hear it.

And the fact that he didn't know made it feel more genuine.

More honest.

More safe.

Kuro's Realization:

Night fell.

Kuro entered his study.

He opened the compartment.

Empty.

He checked the flare mechanism.

Disabled.

Messenger route.

Severed.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

The swordsman had predicted him.

And worse—

The liar boy had helped.

That irritated him more than anything.

Three years of planning.

Three years of control.

And in one afternoon—

A variable had appeared.

Unpredictable.

He hated unpredictability.

Confirmation at the Balcony:

Later that night, Kaya found Kael standing alone beneath the moonlight.

"Why are you really here?" she asked quietly.

"To buy a ship," he answered casually.

Inside his thoughts—

(To stop a murder.)

(To stop your death.)

(To expose a pirate wearing glasses.)

Her breathing faltered.

He noticed this time.

"…You keep reacting before I finish speaking."

He frowned slightly.

"…Am I saying something strange?"

She studied his face carefully.

He genuinely didn't know.

No calculation.

No manipulation.

Just confusion.

"You're… an unusual person," she said softly.

Inside his mind—

(I don't care if this destabilizes the island.)

(I won't let her die.)

She stepped closer.

"…Thank you."

He blinked.

"For what?"

She smiled faintly.

"For visiting."

He still looked mildly puzzled.

But he didn't press the issue.

And that made her trust him even more.

Because if he had known she could hear his thoughts—

He might have acted differently.

But he didn't.

Which meant his thoughts were real.

Morning — The Mask Falls:

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows.

Breakfast had been prepared.

Klahadore stood poised as ever.

Kael rose calmly.

"How long were you planning to kill her… Captain Kuro of a Hundred Plans?"

Silence filled the room.

"Bounty: 16 million berries."

Merry dropped his spoon.

"Captain Kuro?! Sixteen million?! Mr. Kael, what are you talking about?"

Usopp stiffened.

Kaya didn't flinch.

Because she already knew.

Kuro slowly removed his glasses.

The polite smile faded.

His eyes turned cold.

"You've made a calculation error," he said quietly.

The servant was gone.

In his place stood a pirate.

Sharp.

Precise.

Dangerous.

"You should have left while you had the chance."

Kael rested his hand on his sword.

Wind brushed faintly through the hall.

Outside—

Clouds drifted over the sun.

Shadow crept slowly across the floor.

Kuro's claws slid from his sleeves.

Metal gleamed.

Usopp stepped back—but didn't run.

Merry trembled.

Kaya stood behind Kael.

Not because she was told to.

But because she wanted to.

Because she trusted him.

Kuro's gaze sharpened.

"You've interfered with something far beyond you."

Kael's thoughts remained calm.

(He's faster than most pirates in East Blue.)

(But not faster than wind.)

Kuro stepped forward.

Distance closing.

One step.

Two.

The air tightened.

The mansion held its breath.

Kael's fingers tightened slightly around the hilt of his sword.
