Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - Rewards of Victory.

Outside, the sun dipped lower over Cocoyashi Village.

The clearing had grown busier in the last hour. Lanterns were already being lit one by one, their warm glow settling gently over the wooden tables dragged into place. Fire pits crackled steadily. Large iron pots simmered, filling the air with the scent of citrus, grilled fish, and woodsmoke.

Kael stepped into the open space and paused.

People moved with ease now. Conversations overlapped without caution. Someone laughed too loudly at a joke that wasn't particularly good. Children ran between tables without glancing toward the sea.

Life had resumed its natural rhythm.

A small boy nearly collided with Kael's leg before stumbling back.

"It's him!"

Within seconds, three other children surrounded him. One grabbed a long stick and pointed it forward dramatically.

"I'm Kael! Watch this!"

Another child hunched his shoulders and bared imaginary fangs.

"I'm Arlong!"

The stick swung in a wide arc. The "fish-man" collapsed with theatrical screaming.

Several adults nearby chuckled.

Kael looked down at the fallen "Arlong," then at the overly serious "Kael."

(That's… exaggerated.)

He chose not to correct them.

An elderly fisherman approached slowly, removing his hat before stopping a respectful distance away.

"For years," the man began, his voice steady rather than emotional, "we measured our days in payments."

His gaze lifted toward the lanterns overhead.

"Tonight we measure them in hours we don't owe anyone."

He bowed—not deeply, but with intention.

Kael shifted slightly.

"You endured longer than I fought," he replied. "That's not something I can take credit for."

The old man's eyes creased with quiet amusement.

"Maybe not. But someone still had to end it."

Before the moment could grow heavier, Genzo stepped forward, hands shoved into his coat pockets.

"That's enough speeches," he grumbled. "He looks like he'll fall over if someone praises him any longer."

A few villagers laughed.

Genzo glanced at Kael, then away.

"…You did well."

The admission sounded like it had cost him something.

"Don't start acting important because of it."

Kael inclined his head once.

"Wasn't planning to."

One by one, villagers approached.

Not with money.

Not with grand declarations.

A woman placed a woven orange-thread bracelet into his palm.

"We make these during harvest."

A fisherman handed him a smooth shell polished by the tide.

"For luck."

Someone else offered a small wooden carving shaped like a tangerine.

Simple things.

Personal things.

Kael looked down at the collection in his hand.

Firelight flickered across worn wood and faded dye.

(It was necessary.)

Yet the weight of it settled differently than battle ever had.

From the edge of the clearing, Nami watched quietly.

He doesn't know what to do when people thank him.

Beside her, Kaya folded her hands lightly.

He looks more at ease facing enemies than facing gratitude.

Near the fire pits, someone announced that the first platters were ready. Cheers followed. Plates were passed around. Music—off rhythm but enthusiastic—began somewhere near the back.

The lanterns brightened as evening settled fully over Cocoyashi.

And for the first time since the fighting ended, Kael allowed himself to sit among them.

Not at the head of the table.

Just wherever there was space.

The System Rewards:

By the time Kael returned to his room, the village had settled into a steady quiet.

Distant laughter lingered, softer now. The scent of smoke and grilled fish still clung faintly to his clothes.

He closed the door.

Sat down.

"…System."

A pause.

Then—

[Oh. So you do remember me.]

The tone carried restrained irritation.

Kael blinked once.

"…You're upset."

[You triggered a major deviation event, eliminated two high-value targets, destabilized a regional power structure… and decided to call me hours later.]

"I was busy."

[You were eating.]

He didn't deny it.

"…Show me the rewards."

A faint blue interface unfolded before him.

[Major Plot Deviation Confirmed]

[Eliminated: Arlong — Tyrant of East Blue]

[Eliminated: Captain Nezumi — Corrupt Marine Officer]

A subtle pressure shifted through the air.

[Compensation Scaling Applied]

[Breathing Techniques — Overall Output Significantly Increased]

A steady reinforcement spread through his lungs and core. His control felt cleaner. Less wasted motion. Less strain.

[Observation Haki — Level 2 Achieved]

The room expanded in his perception.

He could distinguish the uneven rhythm of footsteps outside the building. The weight of bodies moving across wooden floors in nearby homes. The distant surf breaking against the shore.

Sharper.

More defined.

[Armament Haki — Level 2 Achieved]

A denser, steadier current settled beneath his skin. No flare. No surge.

Just stronger cohesion.

[Wind Breathing Compatibility: 56% → 59%]

Incremental.

Stable.

Then—

[Bonus: Two Random Stat Enhancements Initiating]

[Physical Endurance +27% (Permanent)]

[Reaction Speed +29% (Permanent)]

A controlled wave of reinforcement passed through muscle and nerve.

No dramatic spike.

No pain.

Just increased capacity.

His breathing remained even.

"Continue."

The final line unfolded.

[Reward Acquired: Water Breathing Technique]

Kael's gaze lingered on it for a moment.

"…Store it."

[Stored in System Inventory]

Silence returned briefly.

Then he leaned back slightly.

"A few weeks ago I asked if breathing techniques could be rewarded."

His eyebrow lifted faintly.

"And now I've already received one."

He folded his arms.

"What's up, System? It isn't deliberate, is it?"

A pause.

Longer this time.

[…]

[…]

[…I cannot answer that.]

Kael stared at the hovering text.

"…You're avoiding the question."

[Irrelevant speculation detected.]

"That wasn't an answer."

[…]

[Processing limitations.]

There was the faintest sense of retreat.

Before he could press further—

His expression shifted.

Observation Haki expanded outward.

Two presences.

Approaching.

One from the right corridor.

One from the left.

Neither hostile.

Both familiar.

His gaze moved toward the door.

"Seems the night isn't over."

The system did not respond.

Outside, footsteps slowed.

The two presences stopped on opposite sides of the corridor.

Wood creaked softly beneath careful steps.

Kaya reached the door first—

And nearly stepped back when she saw Nami standing there.

"Oh—" Kaya blinked. "You're here too?"

Nami straightened instinctively.

"I— I just came to ask him something," she said quickly.

Too quickly.

Kaya tilted her head slightly.

Nami felt heat rise to her face.

"It's not what you think," she added, crossing her arms defensively. "I just… had questions. About how he knows things. The things he keeps thinking in his head."

She stopped abruptly.

The words had slipped out before she could reconsider them.

Kaya stared at her for a second.

Then her expression shifted.

"…I already knew."

Nami froze.

"Knew… what?"

"That you can hear it too."

Silence.

Nami's eyes widened slightly.

"I had a feeling," she admitted after a beat. "You react sometimes. When he doesn't say anything."

Kaya nodded once, a small smile forming.

"I thought the same about you."

They stood there, facing each other.

Then—

Both of them stiffened.

Their expressions changed almost at the same time.

"…How can I say it out loud?" Nami asked quietly.

Kaya's eyes widened further.

"What about the restriction?"

Silence fell again.

Neither felt the familiar pressure.

No tightening in the chest.

No invisible barrier forming around the words.

Nothing.

They looked at each other.

Slow realization dawned.

"So is it like…" Kaya began cautiously.

"…everyone who can hear it…" Nami continued.

"…can only talk about it to each other?" Kaya finished.

"And no one else?" Nami added.

They held each other's gaze.

The implication settled between them.

Before either could speak again—

Kael's voice came from inside the room.

"You two planning to stay outside all night?"

Both of them flinched.

Then exchanged a brief look.

Still slightly dazed.

Still processing.

Kaya reached for the door first.

Nami followed.

And together, they stepped inside.

The door closed behind them.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Nami stepped forward.

She bowed.

Deeply.

"I know I've already thanked you," she said, her voice trembling despite her effort to steady it. "But you don't understand what you've done for me… for my village."

Her hands tightened at her sides.

"Kael. Kaya. Thank you."

Tears gathered in her eyes, but she didn't wipe them away.

"You can ask me anything. I'll do anything to repay you."

Kael and Kaya both went still.

"You don't have to do anythi—" Kael began.

Kaya smiled.

"Then why don't you join us?"

Silence.

Both Kael and Nami turned to her.

Kaya continued calmly.

"Kael-san, earlier I spoke with Nojiko. She told me Nami's dream is to travel the world and draw a complete map of it."

She looked at Nami gently.

"She asked me if we could take her with us. She deserves to be free. To chase her own dream."

Nami stared at her, wide-eyed.

Emotion flickered openly across her face.

Kael wasn't particularly surprised. Nojiko would absolutely push Nami toward the sea if it meant freedom.

"I-I…" Nami faltered.

Her eyes drifted toward Kael, uncertain.

Kaya turned to him with a quiet, expectant smile.

"You don't have any problem with her, right? Kael-san?"

Now both of them were looking at him.

(Originally I planned to invite her myself after Arlong was dealt with.)

(But I didn't.)

(It would've looked like I was claiming her as a reward for saving her village.)

(Like taking ownership.)

(After everything she went through… after being forced to serve pirates… I didn't want her to feel cornered again.)

(I'm going to be labeled a pirate by the World Government eventually. That much is inevitable.)

(I won't become another chain around her neck.)

The room fell silent.

Kaya's expression softened.

There was pride in her eyes.

Nami's breath hitched.

Her composure cracked.

Tears spilled over before she could stop them.

Kael stiffened.

"What— What happened?" he asked, caught off guard. "You can join us if you want…"

(Why is she crying? She was just looking at me like she expected me to agree.)

(Does she think I'd reject her?)

(I'd have to be insane to refuse one of the most skilled navigators on the seas.)

(One of the sharpest minds I could possibly have on my crew.)

(And she's… well—)

(Honestly, she's one of the most beautiful women in the world. Not inferior to Kaya at all.)

(I might not be prioritizing things like that right now. There are bigger matters ahead.)

(But I'm not blind. I like smart, brave, loyal, and beautiful women like anyone else.)

A quiet sound escaped Kaya.

Then another.

She covered her mouth, but it was too late.

A soft laugh slipped through, a faint blush warming her cheeks.

So Kael-san likes me.

The thought made her unexpectedly happy.

More certain than ever.

Nami, meanwhile, stood frozen for half a second.

Then her face flushed crimson.

She stepped forward and lightly punched Kael in the chest.

"Kael, you idiot!!"

He blinked at her.

Completely bewildered.

"But what did I do?"
