Manhattan. The sky was falling.
Massive meteors and ship wreckage — trailing fire, pulled by the Power Stone — became a doomsday rain aimed at the most populated island on Earth. Shadows covered entire blocks. The breath of annihilation choked the air.
"It's over..." Peter looked up at the incoming apocalypse. "How do you block this?"
Even for a superhero, area-of-effect devastation at this scale was beyond anything webbing could fix.
"DEFENSIVE FORMATION!" Steve raised his shield — knowing, in the quiet mathematics of despair, that vibranium could protect maybe three people. Maybe four. Out of millions.
Then Tony's voice, carrying a tremor: "Look over there."
In the center of the battlefield, Jake was wrapped in brilliant yellow-green light.
"Omnitrix — DIAMONDHEAD!"
The light exploded.
Petrosapien crystal replaced flesh. Jake — Diamondhead — drove both hands deep into the asphalt, and the crystal-generating cells inside his body began dividing at a rate that should have been impossible.
"RISE — FOR — ME!!"
RRRRUMBLE—!!!
The earth convulsed.
From Jake's position — outward, outward, outward — massive teal diamond pillars erupted from the ground. Not randomly. Architecturally. They grew, spread, interlocked, and wove together into a structure that covered block after block after block — a translucent crystalline canopy stretching over the streets of Manhattan like a dome built by a god who'd decided New York wasn't allowed to die today.
Not ordinary diamond. Titan Crystal — one of the hardest substances in the known universe.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The meteor shower hit.
The sound was beyond hearing — a continuous, skull-splitting percussion that made everyone clamp their hands over their ears. Fire splashed across the canopy's surface. Building-sized meteors shattered on contact with the crystal, exploding into burning fragments that slid off like rain on glass.
The canopy held.
Not a crack. Not a fracture. Not a single point of failure across an entire city block's worth of crystal shielding.
Minutes passed. The last meteor burned to ash against the dome.
The Diamond Canopy still stood.
"Phew..."
Jake pulled his hands free. Controlled the canopy to dissolve — crystal columns retracting into the ground, leaving Manhattan intact beneath a sky that was clear again.
He straightened. Faced Thanos. Tapped his smooth diamond forehead with one finger — ding-ding — producing a crisp, taunting ring.
"How's that, Sweet Potato Spirit? Harder than your rotten stone?"
Thanos looked at the crystal fortress. For the first time, something deeper than annoyance entered his eyes.
Wariness.
Feedback had absorbed the Power Stone's energy. The fusion form had traded blows with two Stones. And now — absolute defense that shrugged off orbital bombardment.
This Earthling was a variable. A massive one. Capable of threatening destiny.
"You are indeed tough."
Both Stones blazed. Full power. No more patience.
"But in this universe — nothing is unbreakable!"
Thanos lunged — two Stones' destructive energy concentrated into a single fist — and punched.
CRACK!!
The indestructible diamond arm screamed. Cracks spiderwebbed from the impact point. Jake was launched backward.
Thanos broke through and charged for Strange.
"SORCERER! GIVE IT TO ME!"
"In your DREAMS!"
Mid-flight, Jake clapped his hands. Every diamond fragment in the air — shrapnel from his own shattered arm — obeyed instantly, reshaping into thousands of razor-sharp flying knives that converged on Thanos's eyes, throat, and joints.
"GET BACK!"
The Power Stone erupted — purple shockwave shattering every crystal blade. But Thanos's momentum stalled for one critical second.
In that second—
"Images of Ikonn!"
Strange split into a thousand copies. Red magical whips — hundreds of them — entangled Thanos's limbs from every direction.
Peter's webs caught the Gauntlet, pinning the fingers.
Tony's nano-suit transformed into suction anchors, locking to the ground, back thrusters pushing against Thanos with maximum output.
Steve and Bucky grabbed his legs.
"NICE! Hold him!"
"Omnitrix — switch! ATOMIX!"
Green flash.
A new form materialized — burly, mechanical, armored in plates that pulsed with nuclear-green energy. The reactor in his chest hummed like a turbine engine approaching critical mass. The air around him bent from radiant heat.
Atomix.
"Nuclear... Winner!!"
"FISSILE WHISTLE!!"
BOOM—!!!
A beam of green nuclear energy — carrying the heat and concussive force of fission itself — hit the immobilized Thanos point-blank in the chest.
"ARGHHH!!"
The Mad Titan — who had shrugged off repulsor beams, shield strikes, and magical restraints — roared in pain. His golden armor shattered. His purple skin charred black. He was launched like a cannonball through ten city blocks and into an abandoned factory.
A small mushroom cloud bloomed.
Dust rolled. The team released their grips, gasping.
"Did we... win?" Peter asked.
"Not that easy." Jake detransformed, eyes fixed on the distant ruins. "His health bar is thicker than Hulk's."
A space portal opened above the wreckage.
Thanos stepped through. Staggering. Bloodied. Smoking Gauntlet. Armor in pieces.
But alive.
He didn't charge back.
His purple eyes took a long, measuring look at Jake. Then at Strange — protected, surrounded, unreachable without committing everything.
The mathematics of the situation were clear. In his current state, forcing the Time Stone meant risking defeat. Without the Reality, Soul, and Mind Stones, Earth's defensive power exceeded his projections by an order of magnitude.
Tactical retreat.
"Earthling... Jake Rivers."
The name was filed. Permanently.
"You won this round. But destiny is irreversible."
"I will return. When the stars in your sky begin to go out — that will be the end."
VROOM!
The Space Stone flared. Blue light enveloped the broken Titan.
"He's RUNNING! No way—!" Tony surged forward.
The portal closed faster than Iron Man could fly.
Thanos was gone.
The streets of Manhattan. Devastated. Cratered. Intact.
"He's gone." Strange dissolved his clones and sat down hard, pale-faced.
"He was driven away," Jake corrected, checking the Omnitrix — energy nearly depleted, every indicator in the red. "There's a difference."
"He'll be back." Steve picked up his shield. "And next time, he brings the full army."
"Then let him come."
Jake turned to his team — battered, bleeding, standing.
"Next time, we go to his front door. The initiative is ours now."
A pause.
He rubbed his stomach. Looked at Wong.
"That tuna sandwich — is there any more?"
