Chapter Twenty: The Mole in the Firm

The vibration of the helicopter faded into the steady hum of a private jet as the Thorne family crossed the Atlantic. The cabin was dim, the only light coming from the small lamp over the mahogany table where the leather-bound ledger lay open.

Thomas Thorne slept in the back, exhausted by the ordeal, while Leo and Mia were curled up in the oversized leather seats, dreaming of spies and mountain escapes.

Julian and Elena sat opposite each other, the ledger between them like a ticking bomb.

The Ledger's Secret

"It's not just a list of names, Julian," Elena whispered, her finger tracing a series of dates. "It's a payroll. Someone inside Blackwood & Thorne has been receiving 'consultation fees' from a shell company tied to the Vanderbilt family for twenty years."

Julian stared at the handwriting. His face was a mask of stone. "That's a partner's signature. But it's encrypted."

He pulled out his laptop and ran a pattern recognition scan on the stylized initials next to the payments. The computer chirped, cross-referencing the ink pressure and stroke angle with the firm's digital signature database.

The screen flickered, then displayed a single name: Robert Sterling.

"Arthur's brother," Julian breathed. "The Managing Partner of the London office. He's been the one feeding Marcus and Arthur the information they needed to try and take us down."

"If Robert is involved, the entire London branch is compromised," Elena said, her legal mind already mapping out the jurisdictional nightmare. "He has access to our offshore accounts and the international litigation strategy. He could sink the firm in a single afternoon."

The Strategy: Return in Secret

Julian looked out at the dark Atlantic. "If we fly into JFK, Robert will know the moment we land. He has the Port Authority on his personal payroll. We need to go 'dark'."

"We land in Teterboro," Elena suggested. "Small airfield, private hangar. We don't go to the penthouse. We go to the one place nobody associates with the Thorne name."

"Where?"

"My sister's apartment in Queens," Elena said with a faint smile. "It's a two-bedroom walk-up above a bakery. Robert Sterling wouldn't step foot in Queens if his life depended on it."

The Queens Safehouse

Three hours later, the "Ice King" and the "Lead Partner" were standing in a cramped, flour-scented hallway in Astoria. Elena's sister, Sofia, opened the door, her eyes wide as she saw Julian Thorne—in tactical gear—carrying a sleeping child.

"Elena? What is going on? Why is there a man who looks like a billionaire in my hallway?"

"Long story, Sof," Elena said, ushering the family inside. "We need a place to stay for forty-eight hours. No phones, no internet, and definitely no newspapers."

The Trap is Set

While Sofia made coffee, Julian and Elena set up a temporary "war room" on the kitchen table. Using a secure, air-gapped laptop, Julian sent a single, encrypted email to Robert Sterling.

> TO: R. STERLING

> FROM: J. THORNE (VIA SWISS SERVER)

> SUBJECT: THE LEDGER

> Thomas is dead. The ledger was destroyed in the Bern fire. I am staying in Zurich to finalize the police reports. I need you to handle the emergency liquidation of the Starlight accounts in London. Use the 'Gray Folder' protocols.

"You're giving him the bait," Elena said, watching the cursor blink.

"The 'Gray Folder' doesn't exist," Julian explained. "It's a tripwire I set up years ago. If anyone tries to access the codes for that folder, it triggers an automatic audit by the Federal Reserve and records the IP address of the user."

"And if he doesn't take the bait?"

"He will," Julian said, his eyes cold. "Robert is greedy. He thinks I'm broken and his brother is winning. He'll try to move the money before I get back to New York."

Suddenly, a notification popped up on the screen.

ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

IP ADDRESS: 100 WALL STREET, NEW YORK CITY.

USER: STERLING_R_ADMIN

"He's not in London," Elena gasped. "He's in the New York office. Right now."

Julian stood up, reaching for his coat. "He's trying to wipe the servers before we can get there."

"Julian, wait," Elena said, grabbing her bag. "We can't just walk in. We need the authorities. We need a paper trail."

"I don't need a paper trail for a traitor, Elena. I need a confession."
