Chapter 21 - The Edge of Nevada

The desert changed slowly.

Ren noticed it over the next two days as the group continued west toward Nevada. At first the differences were subtle. The ground became less dry in certain places. Strange patches of dark grass spread between cracks in the earth. Cactus fields twisted into shapes that looked almost deliberate, like the plants were reaching toward something unseen.

The farther they traveled, the stranger the world became.

By midday on the second day, the heat rolled across the land in shimmering waves. Ren wiped sweat from his forehead and adjusted the rifle slung across his back.

"I miss buildings," he muttered.

Cal laughed softly.

"You complained about buildings too."

"Yeah, but buildings don't usually try to evolve into ancient horrors."

"That's fair."

Jonah continued ahead of them, steady and silent. Mara walked near the center of the group while Elise stayed closer to the rocks lining the highway remains.

The old road had almost disappeared now.

Sand and vegetation swallowed most of it years ago, leaving only broken stretches of cracked asphalt visible between dunes and stone.

Ren looked toward the horizon.

Nevada finally felt close.

Not just a destination anymore.

A real place waiting ahead.

And according to Mercer, it was one of the most unstable regions left in the country.

That thought stayed in the back of Ren's mind as they climbed another rocky incline.

The view from the top made him stop.

"Okay," Ren said quietly. "That's new."

The valley below stretched for miles.

But it wasn't empty desert.

It was alive.

Massive trees with silver bark spread across the lower basin, their branches glowing faintly under the afternoon sunlight. Thick vines hung between them, some large enough to wrap around vehicles. Giant flowers the size of tables bloomed near pools of clear water.

And animals moved through it all.

Dozens of them.

Some looked mostly normal.

Others didn't.

A herd of deer crossed near the water below, but their antlers burned with dim orange light like cooling embers. Birds with translucent feathers drifted through the sky, barely flapping their wings.

Farther out, Ren saw something large moving through the trees.

Too large.

The tops of branches shook as it passed.

"What is that?" Ren asked.

Cal narrowed his eyes.

"…No idea."

Mara looked uneasy.

"The legends are stronger here."

Jonah nodded once.

"Much stronger."

Ren stared down into the valley.

"This is Nevada?"

"No," Jonah replied.

"It's the border."

That made Ren feel even worse.

They began descending carefully.

The deeper they moved into the valley, the quieter the group became. The wildlife here behaved differently from what they had seen before.

Nothing panicked.

Nothing fled immediately.

The animals watched them.

Aware.

A fox stood near the roots of one of the silver trees as they passed. Its fur shifted colors subtly depending on the angle of the light. Three tails moved slowly behind it.

Ren stopped walking.

"…Did that thing just look at me like it was judging me?"

"It probably was," Elise replied.

The fox turned and disappeared into the brush without a sound.

Cal looked ready to explode with excitement.

"This place is incredible."

"It's dangerous," Jonah corrected.

"Both can be true."

The air itself felt different here.

Heavier.

Charged.

Ren could feel more clearly than before, like his legend were reacting to the environment around them.

That unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.

They reached the valley floor by late afternoon.

A shallow river cut through the center, clear enough to reflect the sky perfectly. Strange fish moved beneath the surface, some with glowing patterns along their scales.

Ren crouched beside the water.

"Please tell me none of those turn into ocean gods."

Cal snorted.

"No promises."

Mara knelt beside the river and dipped her fingers into the water.

Her expression tightened slightly.

"What?" Ren asked.

"The water carries legend energy."

Ren blinked.

"…That's a sentence I wish made less sense."

Jonah scanned the surrounding trees.

"We camp before dark."

Nobody argued.

The valley might have been beautiful, but it didn't feel safe.

Not truly.

Cal and Mara prepared the camp while Elise vanished into the trees to scout the surrounding area. Jonah gathered wood while Ren cleaned his revolver near the riverbank.

As the sun began to set, the valley transformed again.

The silver trees glowed brighter beneath the darkening sky. Tiny lights drifted through the air like floating embers, moving lazily between the branches.

Ren watched one land briefly on his hand before lifting away again.

"…Okay. That's actually kind of cool."

Cal looked up from the fire.

"See? Nevada's already growing on you."

Ren smirked faintly.

"Ask me again when something tries to eat us."

As if responding to him, a distant roar echoed through the valley.

The entire group froze.

The sound was deep.

Ancient.

And far too large.

Ren slowly stood.

"…You had to say it."

Jonah moved toward the edge of camp.

"That wasn't close."

"But it exists," Ren replied.

Elise returned from the trees moments later.

Her expression was calm, but Ren could tell she'd seen something.

"We're not alone here," she said.

Ren sighed.

"Of course we aren't."

Elise looked toward the deeper forest.

"There are structures farther west."

Jonah turned toward her.

"What kind?"

"Old," she said. "Partially reclaimed by the forest."

Cal's eyes lit up immediately.

"A settlement?"

Elise shook her head slowly.

"No."

That single word changed the mood instantly.

Ren crossed his arms.

"Then what is it?"

Elise hesitated.

"…A city."

Silence followed.

A city.

Out here.

Hidden beneath the growing wilderness at the edge of Nevada.

Ren looked toward the darkening trees beyond the river.

Something about the valley suddenly felt much larger than before.

Not empty wilderness.

Territory.

And somewhere beyond the glowing forest, something was still living there.
