Chapter 402 - Chapter 402: I Am the Darkness

Dormammu had barely begun stabilizing His base—the frantic, exhausting work of drawing the two severed halves of the Dark Dimension back toward each other using the full weight of His dimensional authority—when the universe decided it wasn't done with Him yet.

From the far half of the split dimension, the half that had slipped beyond His immediate reach the moment the Serious Heat Ray tore through it, something began to emerge.

It looked, at first, like the darkness itself was rejecting something. A figure crawled upward through the void the way a man pulls himself out of a swamp—slow, deliberate, dripping. Thick shadows poured off it in rivulets, streaming downward into the dimensional substrate, and with each drip the figure became more defined: a silhouette, then a face, then a posture. Hair. The line of a jaw. The set of shoulders. Features that sharpened with each passing second as the darkness was shed like a coat being wrung dry.

When his feet finally separated from the void entirely, the remaining darkness stopped dripping.

It ignited.

Dark flames erupted across his frame—not consuming him, but belonging to him, burning in the manner of something that had always been his and had simply been waiting for the right moment to declare itself. The black robe with its red cloud pattern was untouched within the blaze. The face beneath the flames was composed, sharp-featured, and wore a smile that the original Jordan Evans would have found immediately recognizable as his own worst impulse.

Anyone looking at that figure—that aura, that bearing, those flames—would have felt the instinctive pull to bow.

Lord of Darkness.

Dormammu knew this process.

He knew it intimately. Because He had lived it—the slow, inexorable dissolution of a physical self into dimensional substrate, the surrender of flesh to primordial darkness, the rebirth as something no longer bound by the limitations of a living body. Long before He was a god, He had been a wizard who stumbled into the Dark Dimension by accident and discovered, to his eventual advantage, that it would take him if he let it.

He had chosen to let it.

What He was watching now was an exact reenactment of His own apotheosis, playing out on the other side of His shattered home, performed by a shadow clone wearing an Akatsuki coat.

Family. They've staged a reenactment.

The shock of watching oneself become a dimensional demon god from a third-person perspective is not the kind of thing that can be adequately described. Dormammu experienced it anyway.

What He didn't know—couldn't know—was how differently the two processes actually worked.

When Dormammu had merged with the Dark Dimension, He had abandoned His human body. It was too fragile, too limited—a vessel made of meat and bone, wholly inadequate as a container for the power He intended to claim. He had dissolved it deliberately, rebuilt Himself from the dimension's primordial darkness upward.

The shadow clone's body was composed of something else entirely.

Infinite power—drawn from the full, unified divine output of all six Infinity Stones, anchored within a Möbius-strip Pseudo-Herrscher Core—was not a limitation to be shed. It was the most comprehensive carrier for any form of energy in existence, because by definition it contained everything. Darkness was a rule. The infinite power encompassed rules. The two were not incompatible; they were simply in a new relationship.

The shadow clone hadn't dissolved into the Dark Dimension.

He had bathed in it.

Pleasantly, at that. More like a long soak in a hot spring than any kind of sacrifice.

And while the main body's Serious Heat Ray was still ringing through the dimensional walls—while Dormammu's attention was split between the catastrophic breach and the Jordan Evans standing in front of Him—the clone had slipped into the uncontrolled half of the split dimension and gone to work.

The F-boy card mark pulsed outward from his hands in expanding geometric patterns, and the half of the Dark Dimension that had lost Dormammu's grip recognized its new master.

Bound. Completely.

The shadow clone let the dark flames settle and looked across the dimensional rift at Dormammu's true form—still processing what it was seeing.

He tilted his head. Let the silence breathe for exactly one moment.

"I," he said, corners of his mouth curving upward in the particular smile Jordan Evans reserved for situations where he'd gotten away with something audacious, "am darkness."

"NO!!"

The word hit like a detonation.

Dormammu's true form rose from the deepest core of His remaining domain—black-robed, Balrog-flame body, the ancient and absolute presence of a being who had not been genuinely challenged in His own home until approximately the last hour. The dark essence of His half of the dimension answered the call, coalescing around Him in vast billowing columns, His wicked god's form assembling itself with the weight of ages.

"Shameless thief!! I, Dormammu, am the true ruler of darkness!!!"

The remaining Dark Dimension shook.

Stars that had survived Jordan's Serious Heat Ray didn't survive Dormammu's fury—they collapsed inward, one after another, their remnant light swallowed before it could travel a meaningful distance. The void filled with the debris of self-destroying celestial matter, with dimensional tremors that propagated in visible waves through the warped space, with a darkness so total and so angry that it briefly wiped out all the dimension's remaining ambient color. The world ceased being a world and became simply a container for rage.

"You despicable human—you tricked me!!"

"I really didn't," Jordan said, from the intact half of the dimension.

He looked genuinely put-upon.

"I didn't do a single thing over there. Nothing. How can a renowned dimensional demon god from the wider multiverse—a being of your stature and legacy—slander someone's innocence out of thin air?"

Dormammu: He did nothing. A single eye-beam simply cleaved my enormous Dark Dimension in two.

Jordan: ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍

Dormammu's true form entered combat.

The difference was immediate. The avatars had been powerful constructs—substantial enough to flatten most threats—but they were ultimately projections, intermediaries. The true form's mastery of the Dark Dimension's rules was not comparable. His authority over the dimension itself had been reduced by the split, yes, but His direct command over the laws of this space was an entirely different category of capability—layered, instinctive, absolute in the way that only long ages of rule produce.

He moved His hand.

Dark chains erupted from the void in every direction simultaneously—thick as warship cables, flexible as living things, filling the available space with a dense, interlocking weave that left essentially no room to maneuver. They weren't simply physical restraints. Jordan could feel it the moment they appeared: each chain was constructed from lines of restrictive rule, dimensional law compressed into physical form. Being caught meant immediate imprisonment. Being imprisoned here meant the next second would find him ejected from the dimension entirely, with extreme prejudice.

The plan had been half-successful.

The clone had claimed the far half. But the main body was still here, in Dormammu's direct jurisdiction, and getting caught right now was absolutely not on the table.

Jordan moved.

It looked chaotic—his figure flickering and blurring at the edge of each chain's reach, pulling back, changing direction, seemingly on the verge of being locked up a dozen times per second. But his eyes were calm, reading the pattern. The chains were rule-constructs. Rules had geometry. Geometry had gaps.

He found them.

He threaded through the impossible tangle with the appearance of desperate improvisation and the actual precision of someone who had been navigating spatial anomalies since Titan, and then he was through—close, suddenly, closer than Dormammu had expected—

Jordan threw a punch.

Simple. Unadorned. An ordinary punch.

The dimensional space detonated around his fist. Cracks propagated outward like a spider web dropped on glass—but not a contained web, not a local fracture. Thousands of dimensional tears, simultaneously, tearing the intervening space apart in every direction at once. The shockwave of a single ordinary punch from a post-Limiter-Break Jordan Evans carrying infinite power into a direct strike.

And it landed on nothing.

Dormammu's true form stood directly in front of him—close enough that Jordan could see every flame on His body—and was simultaneously infinitely far away. The space between them, less than an arm's length of visible distance, had been quietly expanded by Dormammu's authority into something immeasurable, a pocket of almost infinite volume compressed into a geometric sliver. Jordan's punch traveled into it and kept traveling.

He had walked into a trap.

"Oops," Jordan said. "I've been tricked."

Dormammu's burning head smiled. It was a cold smile—the smile of a being who had been punched apart multiple times and had prepared for exactly this. He closed His great hand, and the dark flames gathering across His palm were different from anything He'd deployed through an avatar: they carried the devouring rule of the dark origin itself, the fundamental property of the Dark Dimension that allowed it to consume other worlds. His hand descended toward Jordan, locked in the infinitely expanded pocket of space.

"Now—everything you have will be nourishment for darkness!!"

The prospect was genuinely intoxicating. Jordan's power—that incomprehensible, boundless divine reservoir that had done all of this—becoming His. The authority He had lost to the split dimension, reclaimed tenfold. His former glory, restored with interest.

Dormammu reached.

And then paused.

Something was wrong.

His power was not increasing. It was decreasing. Measurably. Faster than the ongoing breach should account for.

He looked up.

The two halves of the Dark Dimension—His and the clone's—had drifted back toward each other. Their origins were identical: the same dimensional substrate, the same primordial darkness, the same fundamental nature. They were drawn together the way matching blood types cluster in a compatibility test, the interfacial tension pulling the two halves into contact along a seam that ran the full length of the tear.

At that seam, framed against the joining of two worlds, the shadow clone was working without apparent hurry.

Black robe. Red clouds. Dark flames. Jordan's face wearing its worst smile.

He had activated the Dark Lord's authority—His authority, the portion of it that had transferred when he bound the far half—and was drawing on Dormammu's remaining domain like a straw inserted into someone else's drink.

Dormammu watched His own dimensional territory flowing the wrong direction.

The two halves had been roughly equal in size when the split occurred. They were not equal anymore. The difference was visible. Measurable. And the rate of transfer was accelerating.

If He stayed here—occupied with Jordan, focused on the trap, fighting on two fronts—the seam would eventually encompass the entire boundary. There would be no line left to sever. No tail left to drop. Everything in His half would flow into theirs until there was nothing remaining to rule.

A dimensional demon's power was His dimension. Without the Dark Dimension, He was not diminished—He was nothing.

The deep, ancestral terror of a cosmic entity contemplating genuine nonexistence arrived in Dormammu's consciousness with no ceremony whatsoever.
