The dust finally settled, swallowed entirely by the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing. As the air cleared, pale moonlight spilled into the massive crater, revealing the grim aftermath.
At the epicenter lay Danzo Shimura's mutilated body.
Everything from the waist down was just gone. Torn fabric clung to crushed bone and severed flesh, leaving nothing but a broken torso and a single intact left arm.
Scattered throughout the pit were over a dozen fragmented remains—the loyal Root shinobi who had followed him into battle.
Swish! Swish!
Several figures broke through the treeline, landing lightly at the crater's edge. Tsunade removed her Hokage hat, gazing down into the depths.
Behind her, an Anbu squad quickly fanned out to secure the perimeter. Vigilant eyes scanned the shadows from beneath their animal masks before finally settling on the carnage below.
A heavy silence fell over the area.
"They're all here," an Anbu captain reported, gesturing to the scattered corpses. "Sixteen... no, seventeen members of Root. And..."
He pointed toward the center. "...Danzo Shimura."
Tsunade leaped into the crater, landing softly beside Danzo's corpse. Several Anbu immediately dropped down to flank her. Crouching, she pressed two fingers against the side of Danzo's neck.
A moment later, she withdrew her hand and stood back up.
"He's dead," she announced. "His chakra signature has completely vanished. No vital signs."
She tilted her head back, looking toward the top of the massive wooden buddha looming just outside the crater. The memory of her first meeting with Tejima Shinichi flashed through her mind.
"It looks like you succeeded."
As if on cue, a figure leaped from the crown of the wooden colossus. Tejima Shinichi landed beside Tsunade, kicking up a small cloud of dust.
The Sage Mode markings on his skin slowly faded away, his amber eyes locking onto Danzo's ruined right eye.
'A pity,' Shinichi thought. But compared to that power falling into the wrong hands, this was far from the worst outcome.
"It's over," he said.
Tsunade nodded. "Yeah, it's over. You did it."
Shinichi suppressed a brief flicker of emotion in his eyes, turning his gaze toward Konoha.
Almost simultaneously, two more figures broke the silence of the night, touching down at the crater's edge.
It was the towering, white-haired Jiraiya. Beside him stood the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, dressed in his full combat uniform.
Jiraiya scanned the area. He opened his mouth, a habitual quip ready on his tongue, but the grim sight at the bottom of the pit instantly wiped the smirk from his face.
Hiruzen simply stared at Danzo's mutilated remains.
His lips finally parted. "Can someone tell me what on earth happened here?"
The old man's gaze shifted from the corpse. It swept over Shinichi before settling heavily on Tsunade.
She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she stepped forward, retrieved a small notebook from her coat, and offered it to her former teacher.
"Sensei, once you read this, you'll understand."
Hiruzen stared at the cover for a long moment before taking it. He opened the book and began to read.
Page after page, his fingers would occasionally pause. His pace shifted from rapid scanning to slow, agonizing reading.
The perimeter remained deathly silent. The Anbu held their formation with lowered eyes. No one dared to make a sound.
Several minutes passed before Hiruzen finally reached the last page.
His fingers froze. The hand gripping the diary began to tremble. Under the pale moonlight, his weathered face tightened, draining of all color.
Horrific records flashed through his mind. It was nearly impossible to accept just how much Danzo had orchestrated in the shadows, entirely behind his back.
"I understand," Hiruzen whispered.
He said nothing more.
There was no need to ask why they had acted without him. No need to ask why they had executed Danzo without a trial. The answer was written between the lines of the ledger, and buried deep within his own heart.
If they had brought this to him beforehand, he might not have been able to make the call.
Slowly, he handed the notebook back to Tsunade.
"I am no longer the Hokage," he said. His voice was heavy with exhaustion, yet laced with a strange relief. "You are the Fifth. From here on out, handle these matters as you see fit."
He paused. "I only hope that you... that all of you can protect the village."
Without another word, he turned and began the slow walk back toward Konoha.
"Hey—" Jiraiya reached out, but stopped himself.
He looked at Tsunade, then at Shinichi, before letting his arm drop with a heavy sigh. He didn't follow the old man.
"The old man is having a hard time," Tsunade said quietly, watching Hiruzen's retreating back.
"Yeah," Shinichi agreed.
How could he not?
First, his beloved student Orochimaru had returned to launch the Konoha Crush, intending to kill him.
Now, Tsunade and Shinichi had gone behind his back to ruthlessly execute his oldest comrade.
Not to mention the devastating revelations in that diary. Danzo had been running a twisted, shadow version of Konoha right under his nose for decades.
Blow after blow, these last few months had been a slow execution for the Third. It would be a miracle if he wasn't completely broken by it all.
"But he understands that this was necessary." Tsunade withdrew her gaze and looked at Shinichi. "Right?"
Shinichi didn't answer immediately. He looked toward Konoha. In the distance, the village lights merged into a warm, comforting glow against the night sky.
"Konoha doesn't need a 'Root,'" he finally said. "It only needs trees growing toward the light."
Tsunade offered a small, approving smile. "Well said."
She patted his shoulder. "Let's go. The Anbu will handle the cleanup."
Jiraiya watched the sibling-like dynamic between the two, helplessly scratching his messy white mane.
"You guys are terrifying, you know that? You really pulled off a massive job tonight."
Tsunade shot him a glance but didn't reply, simply tucking the ledger away. Shinichi turned his calm gaze to Jiraiya, silently waiting for him to continue.
Jiraiya let out a long breath, his expression sobering.
"That said, Shinichi... the Konoha Crush was a while ago. The village has caught its breath, and Tsunade is firmly seated as the Fifth Hokage."
He paused, locking eyes with the younger man. "You should be free now, right? That thing you promised me hasn't happened yet. You didn't forget, did you?"
Shinichi thought for a moment. He immediately realized what Jiraiya meant... the trip to Mount Myōboku to meet the Great Toad Sage.
He nodded.
"I haven't forgotten. There was just too much going on. But yes, it's time to set off."
He turned to Tsunade. "The village is stable for now. I don't need to keep an eye on things every second, right?"
Tsunade crossed her arms and lifted her chin in a display of classic stubborn pride. "Nonsense, who do you think I am?"
She paused, her tone softening considerably.
"Go. Do what you need to do. I'll keep watch over the village." She offered a warm smile. "That's what I promised you, after all."
