Lyra's POV:
"You belong to us."
The words still didn't fade.
They settled.
Heavy and final.
The forest answered him.
Not loud. Not wild. Just a low, unified sound that rolled through the trees like agreement.
My skin went cold.
No.
No, that was not happening.
I stepped back without thinking.
The tall one moved with me instantly, his body shifting just enough to stay between me and everything else. I could feel the tension in him now. Not just anger. Not just control.
Something sharper.
Something close to losing it.
"They don't get to decide that," the bronze one said, his voice rough, low, ready.
The lean one didn't speak. His eyes stayed on the tree line, tracking every movement, every shadow.
"They already did," the man replied calmly.
My stomach twisted.
"What are you talking about?" I snapped, my voice breaking through the tension. "I don't belong to anyone."
The man's gaze softened.
That was worse.
"You think this is about choice," he said.
"It is!" I shot back.
"It stopped being about choice the moment you called them."
My breath hitched.
"I didn't call anything."
The pulse under my skin flickered again.
Not pain this time.
Awareness.
Like something listening.
The man saw it.
Of course he did.
"You did," he said quietly. "You just didn't know how."
The creatures in the forest shifted.
Not forward. Not back. They moved closer.
Not physically.
Something else.
Like the distance between us didn't matter.
Like they were already near enough.
The tall one's hand closed around my wrist.
Firm.
Grounding.
"Don't listen to him."
Simple and clear.
But his voice carried something else now.
Strain.
The man's smile returned, faint.
"He says that like he understands what you are."
The tall one didn't respond.
That silence felt louder than anything.
My chest tightened.
"You keep saying that," I said, forcing the words out. "What I am. What does that even mean?"
No one answered immediately.
The bronze one shifted slightly.
The lean one's jaw tightened.
The tall one looked at me.
Really looked.
And for the first time since I met him, I saw it clearly.
Uncertainty.
That scared me more than the creatures.
"Tell her," the man said softly.
The tall one's gaze snapped back to him.
"Not another word."
The temperature dropped.
Not outside.
Between them.
The man exhaled slowly, almost amused.
"You're already too late."
The forest moved.
This time, it wasn't subtle.
One of the creatures stepped forward.
Then another. Then more.
They didn't rush, didn't lunge, didn't attack.
They walked.
Slowly, measured, deliberate.
My heart started racing again.
"What are they doing?" I whispered.
"They're coming to collect you," the man said.
"No."
The word came out sharp.
Immediate. Mine.
I felt it.
That refusal.
It was deep and instinctive.
The creatures paused.
All at once.
Every single one.
The silence that followed was thick enough to choke on.
The man's eyes lit up again.
"There it is," he murmured. "That."
My breath came faster.
"I didn't do anything," I said, but it sounded weaker now.
The lean one turned his head slightly.
"You did," he said. "They felt it."
"Felt what?"
No answer.
The tall one stepped forward slightly.
Placing himself fully between me and them.
"They don't take what isn't theirs," he said.
The man tilted his head.
"And you think she's yours?"
The question landed heavy and dangerous.
The bronze one let out a low sound.
The lean one didn't move.
The tall one didn't answer.
That silence again.
But this time, I understood it.
And I didn't know how I felt about it.
The man's gaze shifted to me.
"Do you feel it?" he asked.
I didn't want to answer.
Didn't want to admit anything.
But the truth was already there.
Under my skin.
In my chest.
In the way the air felt different when I breathed.
"…yes."
The word slipped out.
Quiet.
Real.
The tall one's hand tightened slightly.
Not enough to hurt.
Enough to remind me he was there.
The man nodded slowly.
"They feel you too."
The creatures took another step forward.
This time, closer.
My body tensed.
But I didn't move back.
I couldn't.
Because something in me…didn't want to.
That realization hit like a slap.
No.
No, that wasn't right.
That wasn't me.
The tall one felt it.
I saw it in the way his shoulders tensed.
The way his grip changed.
"Lyra."
My name.
Low and grounding.
I focused on it.
On him.
On something real.
"I'm here," I said, more to myself than to him.
The pull didn't disappear.
But it loosened.
Just enough.
The man watched all of it.
Every second.
Every shift.
"You can fight it," he said. "For now."
"For now?" I repeated.
His smile was slow.
Knowing.
"It won't last."
The bronze one stepped forward.
That was it.
Enough.
"We're done talking."
The air shifted again.
Not like before.
This time, it was sharp.
Ready.
Violent.
The creatures reacted.
Not attacking. They were responding.
Like they were waiting for permission.
From him.
From me?
I didn't know which was worse.
The tall one moved first.
Fast.
Decisive.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me back a step.
"Stay behind me."
Again.
Always that.
But this time, I didn't argue.
Because something told me this was about to get worse.
Much worse.
The man sighed softly.
"You still think you can keep her."
"We don't think," the tall one said.
The words were quiet.
But they hit harder than anything else.
"We know."
Something snapped.
The creatures surged forward.
All at once.
Not slow anymore.
Not careful.
Fast.
Too fast.
The forest exploded into movement.
The bronze one shifted instantly, meeting the first wave head on.
The lean one moved like before, precise, cutting through anything that got too close.
The tall one didn't move.
Not at first.
He stayed in front of me.
Waiting.
Watching.
Then he turned his head slightly.
"Run."
Again.
But this time…I hesitated.
Because the pull was stronger now. Louder, closer, and calling me.
My body leaned forward without permission.
Toward them.
Toward the creatures.
"Lyra."
His voice snapped through it.
Sharp and commanding.
Real.
I blinked.
And the moment broke.
I stepped back.
Hard.
"No."
The word came out stronger this time.
Mine.
The pull snapped and the creatures faltered.
Just for a second but it was enough.
The tall one moved.
Finally.
Fully.
He shifted mid step.
Faster than before.
Cleaner, more controlled, more dangerous.
And I saw it clearly this time.
Not just what he was.
What he became.
A wolf.
But not like the others.
Bigger, darker, stronger.
His eyes burned red as he launched into the fight.
The impact was brutal and immediate.
The ground shook under it.
I stumbled back again, heart racing, breath uneven.
This wasn't a fight anymore.
This was more of a collision.
Two sides that had been waiting for this.
And I was in the middle.
The man didn't move.
He just watched.
Still. Calm. Certain.
"They won't be enough," he said.
I shook my head.
"They will."
But I didn't know if I believed that.
The creatures kept coming.
More than before.
Stronger and faster.
The bronze one was holding his own.
The lean one moved like nothing could touch him.
The tall one was different.
He was focused and relentless.
Everything that came near me didn't last long.
But it wasn't enough.
There were too many.
And they weren't stopping.
My chest tightened.
"They're not slowing down," I said.
"They don't need to," the man replied.
My stomach dropped.
"Why?"
His eyes met mine.
"Because you're still standing."
The meaning hit instantly.
Hard.
They weren't trying to kill me.
They were trying to take me.
Alive.
The realization changed everything.
"They're not going to stop," I whispered.
"No," he said. "They're not."
The tall one heard it.
Of course he did.
He turned slightly.
Just enough to look at me.
And in that moment, I saw it.
Decision, not hesitation, not doubt but something final.
"Lyra."
My name again.
Different this time.
He moved toward me.
Fast.
Before I could react, his hand caught mine.
Heat shot through me.
Stronger than before.
Sharper.
The pulse came back.
But this time, it wasn't mine alone.
It was his too.
Connected.
My breath hitched.
"What are you doing?"
His grip tightened.
"Ending this."
The man's expression changed.
Finally.
Not calm or amused. He was alert.
"You don't know what that will do," he said.
The tall one didn't look at him.
"I don't care."
My heart slammed.
"What are you talking about?"
He looked at me.
Fully.
And something in my chest dropped.
Because whatever he was about to do, it wasn't small.
It wasn't safe.
"You trust me?"
The question caught me off guard.
Now? Here? With everything happening?
I didn't have time to think. Didn't have time to doubt.
"…yes."
The word left before I could stop it.
Something shifted between us.
Real. Immediate. Dangerous.
The man stepped forward.
Too fast.
"Don't."
Too late.
The tall one pulled me closer.
And the moment our bodies collided, everything broke.
The pulse exploded.
Not just inside me. Everywhere.
The ground cracked beneath our feet.
The air changed.
A wave of force slammed outward, stronger than before, violent, uncontrolled.
Every creature in the forest froze.
Every single one.
Including his.
The bronze one staggered.
The lean one stopped mid movement.
The man, he didn't move but his eyes widened.
For the first time.
Shock.
Real shock.
"What did you do?" I gasped.
But I already felt it.
The connection was stronger now.
Clear. Unavoidable.
Not just between me and him.
Between me and all of them.
The creatures, the forest, everything.
Silence fell heavy and absolute.
And then, one of the creatures dropped to its knees.
Then another, then all of them.
My breath caught.
They weren't attacking anymore.
They weren't moving.
They were submitting.
The man stared.
Not at them.
At me.
And this time, there was no smile.
Only certainty.
"…well," he said quietly.
My chest tightened.
Because I knew before he even said it.
"You don't belong to us."
My stomach dropped.
The tall one's grip tightened.
Just slightly.
As if he already understood what was coming next.
The man's voice lowered.
Dark and certain.
"You don't belong to them either."
The forest held its breath.
So did I.
And then he said it.
"You belong to something worse."
My heart stopped.
Because deep down, I felt it too.
