Chapter 137 - not to win

Elena suddenly stepped forward, raising her hand slightly between them as if drawing a clear line neither of them had noticed crossing. "Stop," she said, her voice not loud, but firm enough to cut through everything.

Both Ethan and Yuna went quiet—not because they wanted to, but because something in her tone demanded it. Elena looked from one to the other, her brows drawn, not angry, but frustrated in a way that came from watching two people spiral when they didn't need to. "Do you hear yourselves right now?" she asked, crossing her arms.

"You're both talking, but neither of you is actually listening." Yuna frowned slightly, still tense. "I am listening—" "No," Elena interrupted gently but firmly. "You're reacting.

Both of you."

She turned her gaze to Ethan. "You're answering just enough to keep things from exploding, but not enough to actually fix anything." Then she looked back at Yuna.

"And you're taking every incomplete answer and turning it into something bigger than it is." The room fell into a quiet tension again, but this time it wasn't sharp—it was reflective. Elena let out a slow breath. "You're fighting like jealous kids who don't want to admit they're scared," she said, softer now. That word—scared—landed differently.

Yuna's expression shifted slightly, her anger losing some of its edge. "I'm not scared," she said, but her voice wasn't as strong as before. Elena gave her a small look. "You are," she said calmly. "You're scared of losing him, of not understanding him, of getting hurt again." Yuna didn't respond. Because she couldn't fully deny it.

Elena then turned to Ethan. "And you," she added, "you're scared of losing control." Ethan's jaw tightened slightly, but he didn't argue. "You keep everything contained, calculated, controlled," Elena continued.

"But the moment something doesn't fit that—like her feelings, like your past—you shut down instead of dealing with it properly." The silence that followed wasn't defensive anymore. It was uncomfortable because it was true. Yuna looked away, her fingers tightening slightly on the blanket again, but not out of anger this time—out of uncertainty.

"This isn't just about that girl," Elena went on. "It's about trust. And right now, neither of you is building it." Yuna exhaled slowly, her voice quieter now. "I'm trying." "I know you are," Elena said gently. "But trying doesn't mean pushing him until he breaks or pulling away every time you don't like an answer."

That made Yuna pause. Elena's gaze softened slightly. "And you," she said, looking at Ethan again, "you can't keep deciding what she needs to know and what she doesn't. That's not protection. That's control."

Ethan didn't respond, but something in his posture shifted—just slightly. Elena stepped closer to the bed, her tone softer now, less confrontational, more grounding. "You both went through too much in a very short time," she said. "Loss, truth, confusion… none of that disappears just because you want things to feel normal again." Yuna's eyes dropped, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't want normal… I just want clarity." Elena nodded. "Then give it time," she said. "Clarity doesn't come from arguing. It comes from understanding." She looked at Ethan. "And that means being honest—even when it's uncomfortable."

Then back to Yuna. "And that means not assuming the worst before you've heard the whole truth." Another silence followed, but this one felt calmer. Less sharp.

Yuna leaned back slightly, her energy fading again, but her expression less tense than before. Ethan remained where he was, quieter now, his usual control not gone—but no longer as rigid. Elena let out a small breath, shaking her head lightly. "Honestly," she added, a faint hint of humor slipping in, "if I didn't know better, I'd think you two were arguing over something simple."

Yuna almost let out a small, tired laugh. "It doesn't feel simple." "It's not," Elena admitted. "But that doesn't mean you have to make it worse." She paused, then added more softly, "You both care. That's obvious. But caring without understanding just turns into conflict."

Yuna looked at Ethan again, but this time her gaze wasn't accusing. It was searching.

Ethan met her eyes, and for once, neither of them looked away immediately. There was still tension. Still uncertainty.

But something had shifted. Elena stepped back slightly, giving them space again. "Talk," she said simply. "Not like this. Not to win. Just… talk." And for the first time since the argument had started, the room didn't feel like it was closing in on them.

It felt like there was space again—small, fragile, but real—for something better to take its place.

Ethan's gaze lingered on Elena for a moment longer, cool and unreadable, as if weighing her words even after she had finished speaking. Elena caught that look, paused, then let out a small breath, her expression softening just a little. "That's it for today," she said gently, glancing between them. "I'll get going now. Take care, Yuna." There was something reassuring in her tone, like she was leaving them not because things were resolved, but because they needed to face them on their own. Yuna gave a faint nod, still quiet, still processing everything. Elena didn't wait for more; she turned and walked toward the door, pulling it open and stepping out, the soft click of it closing behind her leaving the room wrapped in silence once again.

For a few seconds, neither of them moved.

Ethan stood where he was, his posture still, his expression unreadable—but then something shifted. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the coldness in his eyes faded. When he looked at Yuna again, it wasn't sharp or distant anymore. It was quieter. Warmer in a way that didn't need words.

Yuna noticed it immediately.

Her breath slowed, her fingers loosening slightly against the blanket as she held his gaze. There was no anger in her expression now, no sharp questions—just a quiet uncertainty, mixed with something softer that she hadn't fully pushed away.

Ethan stepped closer.

Not abruptly.

Not with the same intensity as before.

This time, it was measured… careful.

He stopped beside the bed, looking down at her for a moment, as if making sure she was okay, as if checking whether he should come any closer at all.

Yuna didn't pull away.

That was enough.

He reached out slowly, his hand brushing lightly against her hair, tucking a loose strand behind her ear. The gesture was simple, almost hesitant, but it carried more weight than anything else he had done.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

Yuna nodded faintly. "Yeah… I'm okay."

There was a pause.

Then she added, softer, "Just tired."

Ethan gave a small nod, his gaze not leaving her face.

"I didn't mean to make things harder," he said after a moment.

Yuna looked at him, searching his expression again. "I know," she replied. "But you still did."

He didn't deny it.

"I'll try not to," he said.

She exhaled slowly, leaning back slightly into the pillow. "Just… don't hide things from me."

"I won't."

This time, there was no hesitation in his voice.

Yuna studied him for a second longer, then gave a faint nod, as if accepting that for now—even if she wasn't fully sure yet.

The silence returned again, but it wasn't heavy like before.

It was softer.

Ethan moved a little closer, his presence steady, not overwhelming. His hand hovered for a second before gently resting near hers, not forcing contact, just… there.

Yuna didn't move away.

Instead, her fingers shifted slightly, brushing against his.

That small contact changed something.

Ethan's gaze softened further, and slowly, he leaned in just a little—not rushing, not overwhelming—just enough to close the distance between them in a quiet, careful way.

Yuna's breath caught slightly, but she didn't stop him.

This time, there was no intensity, no urgency.

Just a quiet closeness.

A moment that didn't demand anything.

Didn't take anything.

Just stayed.

When he pulled back slightly, his eyes met hers again.

No confusion.

No pressure.

Just something calm.

Something real.

And for once—

Neither of them tried to question it.
