Chapter 5:
By the time adolescence reached its later years she had learned that survival required editing and so she began the slow careful process of hiding herself it did not happen all at once there was no single decision no moment of declaration it was a series of small adjustments each one justified each one reasonable until the version of herself she presented to the world barely resembled the girl she once was she did not disappear entirely she simply became quieter safer more manageable
She learned which parts of herself invited trouble and which parts earned approval curiosity became restraint enthusiasm became moderation honesty became diplomacy she studied reactions closely filing away lessons about what to show and what to conceal laughter was measured opinions softened emotions filtered she did not see this as loss at first she saw it as maturity because that was how it was framed growing up meant knowing when to speak and when to stay silent when to want less and when to accept more responsibility than joy
Her voice changed subtly it became lower calmer less demanding she stopped asking questions that challenged authority and started asking questions that sounded acceptable she noticed how people responded more positively to this version of her how praise came more easily when she did not threaten comfort she was rewarded for being agreeable and those rewards reinforced the behavior approval became a currency she learned to earn by giving up pieces of herself
At school teachers described her as well behaved reliable mature for her age these words were meant as compliments and she accepted them gratefully because they signaled safety being well behaved meant being left alone being reliable meant being trusted with responsibility but rarely with freedom being mature meant carrying weight that was never evenly distributed she did not realize then that these labels often disguised expectations that demanded sacrifice rather than growth
Among her peers she became the listener the mediator the one who understood everyone else's problems while minimizing her own she absorbed secrets offered comfort and carried burdens that were not hers because empathy had become her shield it made her useful and usefulness felt like protection she learned that people valued her most when she was needed not when she needed them and so she learned to need less to ask for nothing to manage her struggles quietly
Her dreams retreated inward becoming private possessions rather than shared ambitions she stopped speaking about the future with excitement and started framing it with practicality she learned which aspirations sounded acceptable and which invited dismissal so she edited them accordingly shrinking possibility until it fit inside what others expected of her this editing hurt but it hurt less than ridicule less than disappointment less than being told she was unrealistic or ungrateful
Fear continued shaping her choices guiding her toward caution and away from risk opportunities were evaluated through the lens of safety could she manage it without attracting attention without inviting judgment without increasing vulnerability often the answer was no and so she declined quietly telling herself it was temporary that she would pursue these things later when conditions were better when she was older when she was safer later became a distant promise she used to soothe disappointment
Her body language reflected this internal retreat shoulders slightly hunched movements contained eyes alert but guarded she learned to read rooms quickly adjusting herself to fit expectations she smiled when required laughed politely and kept discomfort hidden behind composure this performance was exhausting but it kept her safe and safety had become her priority even at the expense of authenticity
There were moments when anger surfaced unexpectedly when frustration bubbled too close to the surface and frightened her because anger felt dangerous she had learned that angry girls were punished dismissed or labeled difficult so she redirected that anger inward questioning herself instead of the circumstances blaming her sensitivity rather than the injustice this internalization became habitual shaping her self perception in quiet damaging ways
She noticed how boys her age were encouraged to explore to fail to assert themselves while she was encouraged to be careful to consider consequences to think of others first this contrast unsettled her but she struggled to articulate why because it had been normalized so thoroughly she accepted responsibility easily shouldering expectations without questioning their origin she became accustomed to carrying weight that was never meant for her alone
Her relationship with her body remained cautious she treated it like something fragile something that needed constant supervision she monitored how she looked how she moved how she was perceived this vigilance prevented ease even in moments meant for relaxation she was always slightly tense waiting for correction waiting for judgment she did not remember what it felt like to exist without calculation
Despite this concealment there were fragments of her true self that refused to disappear completely they surfaced in private moments in writing she never shared in thoughts she never voiced in dreams that still carried ambition and desire these fragments reminded her that she was more than the version she presented to the world but acknowledging them openly felt risky so she kept them hidden nurturing them quietly like forbidden seeds
Loneliness crept in subtly disguised as independence people praised her self sufficiency unaware that it was born from necessity rather than choice she learned to rely on herself because relying on others often led to disappointment or vulnerability she became skilled at managing alone convincing herself that solitude was strength even when it felt heavy even when it ached
She began to understand that hiding was not just about safety it was about belonging fitting into a world that had limited roles available to girls like her roles that demanded sacrifice and silence she adapted because adaptation was survival but adaptation came with a cost it distanced her from her own needs her own desires her own voice she did not yet know how to reclaim
Sometimes she caught glimpses of the girl she used to be in old photographs or memories moments of unguarded joy laughter without restraint movement without fear these glimpses stirred grief because they reminded her of what had been lost not through a single event but through gradual erosion she mourned that girl quietly because mourning openly felt indulgent unnecessary dramatic
As adolescence neared its end she stood at the edge of something undefined carrying lessons she had never chosen but had mastered she was composed capable and cautious traits that would serve her in many ways but she was also tired tired of monitoring tired of shrinking tired of hiding she did not yet know how to rest how to exist without armor because armor had become part of her identity
She wondered whether adulthood would bring relief or simply demand new forms of endurance she hoped for freedom but did not fully trust it hope felt fragile easily broken she had learned not to expect too much from the world because expectation made disappointment sharper she prepared herself instead for continued compromise
Yet beneath the layers of concealment beneath the careful editing and constant vigilance there remained something intact a core that had not been fully surrendered it was quiet patient waiting she did not yet have language for resilience or resistance but they lived within her nonetheless she survived adolescence not unscarred but unextinguished
The girl she learned to hide was still there watching waiting remembering and one day she would demand to be seen but for now survival required silence and so she continued walking her dark path carrying herself carefully toward an adulthood she hoped would finally allow her to breathe
