People fear many things. The dark. Silence. Betrayal. The eyes that watch when no one is looking. But in this age, the thing people feared most could be summed up in a single word: Shadows.
The Academy's east gate opened at seven in the morning.
Seventeen people walked through it.
Not in formation — not with the particular organized quality of a team moving toward something that required organization. More like the specific dispersal of people who had been told they had one week and had collectively decided that one week meant something and were moving accordingly, the energy of the departure carrying the specific lightness of a thing that had been earned rather than given.
Azel had said it the night before. Flat, sufficient, the card deck in his hand and the shadow two seconds ahead of him on the floor.
One week. All of you. Don't make me regret it.
He had not said where. He had not needed to. Dusk had known since the previous afternoon — had made arrangements without announcing that arrangements were being made, the way Dusk did most things. Three wagons. Supplies. A location two hours east of the city that had a river and enough flat ground for camp and no particular reason for anyone else to be there.
The wagons were already loaded when they came through the gate.
Gus had packed the food wagon himself, which everyone accepted without comment because the alternative — letting anyone else decide what went into the food wagon — was not something anyone was willing to consider seriously. He had been in the Academy kitchen since before sunrise and the smell coming from the wagon's covered section was the specific smell of someone who had not packed provisions so much as prepared for a circumstance.
Arlo climbed into the first wagon and lay down across the bench with the ease of someone who had decided that the appropriate posture for a two-hour journey was horizontal. His white hair spread around him. He closed his eyes before the wagon started moving.
"He's going to be asleep before the city gate," Lussal said.
"He's already asleep," Milo said. He had his notebook. He was writing something before the wagon had fully pulled away, the cramped precise hand moving across the page with the efficiency of someone who did not waste a surface.
Betham sat across from Arlo with his arms folded and looked at the passing city with the expression that was his default expression, which communicated assessment without communicating what the assessment had found. Rendia was beside him, not talking, watching the street. Avent had his puppet in his lap — the small human-shaped one in its miniature hunter's uniform — and was doing something to its arm joint with a small tool, adjusting something, his eyes apparently closed but his hands entirely precise.
The city moved past the wagon's open side in the grey morning light.
Eren sat near the back, watching Safe Haven recede.
The barrier shimmered at its edge. It always shimmered. But the shimmer had been different since the Celebration Hall and he had stopped trying to identify exactly how it was different and had started simply noting it each time, the way you noted something that was changing too slowly to track but too consistently to ignore.
Kayra was beside him. She was not looking at the barrier. She was looking at her hands — at the bonetite sword's hilt, the slow pulse of it running through the scabbard, visible at the guard. She had not said anything since they left the tower. That was not unusual for Kayra. What was unusual was the particular quality of the silence, which was not the silence of someone with nothing to say but the silence of someone who had decided the things they had to say could wait for a different kind of space than the inside of a moving wagon.
Raphael was talking to Shirou about something that had apparently been a disagreement before the wagon started moving and was still a disagreement now. Shirou was holding his pipe and not lighting it and responding to Raphael with the flat, unhurried tone of someone who had no interest in winning the argument and also no interest in conceding it.
Orin sat near the front, hands on his knees, silver element running at its usual low level just below the surface of his skin. He was looking at the road ahead. He said nothing, which was what Orin did, and his face said nothing, which was also what Orin did, and the combination of those two things was somehow more present than most people managed with words and expression both.
Dusk was on horseback beside the wagons.
His shadow ran two seconds ahead of him on the road, reading the path before he reached it. The wound in his side was still there — present in the slight adjustment of how he sat the horse, the specific management of someone who was handling something and had made internal arrangements to make the handling look like nothing. He had not mentioned it since the estate. Nobody had brought it up. These were the unspoken agreements that formed in teams over time, the ones that didn't need articulation because articulation would have made them into something they weren't.
Nicholas was on the second horse, the red scarf back around his collar, the right eye with its crimson veins turned toward the road ahead. He rode without looking like he was thinking about riding, which was the mark of someone who had done a great deal of it.
Zerith rode beside him — which required a horse that had made a specific accommodation to having a rider of his height and build, and the horse in question appeared to have made this accommodation some time ago and had opinions about reversing it. Zerith rode with the ease of someone who had traveled a great deal and had stopped finding transportation remarkable. The violet light was absent, as it usually was when he was simply moving through the world rather than doing something with it.
Cain was on the third horse. He was not talking to anyone. He was looking at the road with the expression of someone who was present in a space without making the presence into a statement.
The wagons moved east.
The city fell behind.
The road climbed.
The river came into view an hour and forty minutes out.
It was not a dramatic river — not wide, not fast, not the kind that made you stop and look at it. It was the kind that had been there a long time and had settled into the landscape the way things settled when they had been somewhere long enough that the landscape had grown around them rather than the other way around. The trees along its banks were old, the roots visible where the water had worked at the soil over decades. The flat ground Dusk had identified was on the northern bank, sheltered on three sides by a shallow rise, open to the south where the morning light came through.
The wagons stopped.
Seventeen people got out.
"Camp," Dusk said. He had dismounted and was standing at the flat ground's edge looking at it with the shadow running ahead, reading the space. "Here. Everything off the wagons." He looked at the group. "Betham. Milo. You know what needs doing."
Betham was already moving before Dusk finished. Milo had closed his notebook.
What followed was the organized dispersal of a team that had done this before — not this specifically, but the category of this, the physical assembly of a temporary home in a space that had been nothing before they arrived and would be something before the morning was over. Betham and Milo coordinated without discussing coordination, which was the specific efficiency of people who had worked together long enough to have developed a shared spatial logic. Rendia appeared to be doing three things at once and was succeeding at all three. Avent had put the puppet away and was moving with a focused efficiency that was completely at odds with the half-asleep quality he carried in rooms.
Gus went directly to the food wagon. He began unloading it with the specific attention of someone reacquainting themselves with materials they had packed and were now deploying for their intended purpose. A fire pit was already being dug nearby by Cain, who had a small folding spade and was using it without ceremony.
"Fishing," Lussal said. He said it to no one specifically, the way announcements were made in groups that operated without hierarchies of permission. "River looks decent. Anyone?"
"I know a better spot," Zerith said.
He said it from approximately two meters above the ground level, which was simply where his head was, and with the casual certainty of someone who had been to this location before or had assessed it thoroughly enough on arrival to have an opinion about where its fish were.
Lussal looked at him. "Better how."
"Deeper. Quieter. Twenty minutes upstream." He looked at the group. "Two people. More than that and we disturb it."
Lussal looked at Rendia.
Rendia was carrying something heavy and did not look up. "I'm busy," she said. It was not a complaint.
Zerith looked at Eren.
Eren looked at the camp being assembled around him — the fire pit taking shape, the food wagon being unpacked, Arlo already somehow in a folding chair that hadn't existed five minutes ago — and looked back at Zerith.
"Alright," he said.
Twenty minutes upstream was accurate.
The spot was where the river bent around an outcropping of old stone, the water deepening on the inner curve, the surface quieter there than in the main channel, the kind of quiet that accumulated in places where the current slowed and the light came through at an angle that made the depth look greater than it was. The trees on the bank were older here. The roots came further into the water.
Zerith sat on one of the larger roots with the ease of someone who had sat on worse. He had a line — simple, no particular ceremony about how it had appeared — and he put it in the water and looked at the surface and did not appear to be thinking about anything specific, which was either accurate or a very good performance of accuracy.
Eren sat on the bank and put his own line in and looked at the water.
For a while neither of them said anything.
This was not uncomfortable. That was the thing about it — the silence had the quality of a space that didn't require filling, that had been arrived at naturally rather than produced by the absence of something that should have been there. Zerith occupied silences the way he occupied rooms, which was completely and without apology.
"You come here often?" Eren asked. He said it with the specific tone of someone who knew exactly how the question sounded and was asking it anyway.
"Three times," Zerith said. "The first time I found it by accident. The second time I came back to confirm it was real." He looked at the water. "The third time is now."
"And you brought me on the third time."
"You were available." Something moved at the corner of Zerith's mouth — very small, the expression of someone who did not smile often and was making a controlled exception. "And the others were busy."
"Lussal wasn't busy."
"Lussal talks while he fishes."
Eren looked at the water.
"Fair," he said.
The line moved. Eren pulled. The fish was small — not embarrassingly small, just small, the kind of fish that a river this size produced in quantity rather than scale. He unhooked it and put it in the bucket they had brought and put the line back in.
Zerith watched this with the attention of someone cataloguing technique.
"You've fished before," he said.
"My father used to take me." Eren looked at the water. "Before."
The word landed in the space between them and sat there. Zerith did not respond immediately, which was not from discomfort — it was the specific quality of someone giving a word the room it had asked for before moving past it.
"Before," Zerith said.
"He was a hunter." Eren's voice was what it was — level, carrying what it was carrying without letting it change the surface too much. "Senior rank. He was killed in front of me when I was eight." He paused. "A werewolf. That was what the report said." He paused again. "Kael told me it wasn't a werewolf. That something else happened that night. I don't know what."
Zerith looked at the water.
"The not knowing," he said, "is its own kind of weight."
"Yes."
"Separate from the loss. The loss is the loss. The not knowing sits differently."
"Yes." Eren looked at him. "You sound like you know."
Zerith was quiet for a moment. His line moved slightly and then stilled.
"Everyone in this team has a version of that story," he said. "The details change. The shape of it is similar." He looked downstream, toward where the camp was, toward the smoke that was beginning to be visible above the treeline where Cain had the fire going. "Cain, for instance."
Eren looked at him.
"His father died when he was young," Zerith said. His voice had not changed — it was still the same level, direct delivery, the voice of someone who measured words before spending them. "His stepbrother inherited what little the family had. When Cain was fourteen, he found out what the stepbrother had done with his mother." He paused. "Sold her. Slave market. Eastern routes."
The river moved past them.
"Cain found his stepbrother," Zerith said. "He was fifteen by then. He had spent a year finding him." He looked at the water. "He cut his throat."
The birds in the trees above them continued what they had been doing. The water continued moving. These things did not adjust for what had been said.
"He never found his mother," Zerith said. "He looked for years. He is still looking, I think, in the way that people looked for things they had decided they would find eventually and had not yet stopped believing in eventually."
Eren was quiet.
"I'm telling you this," Zerith said, "because you should know who you are living with. And because—" The controlled exception came back to the corner of his mouth. "If you ever want to bring it up with him directly, I would advise strongly against it."
"How strongly."
"In the sense of: if you value the continued functionality of your throat."
Eren looked at him.
Zerith looked back with the dark amber eyes, entirely serious.
Eren laughed. It came out before he had decided to let it come out — brief, real, the kind that arrived without asking permission. Zerith's controlled exception expanded slightly, the closest his face appeared to get to something that was fully a smile.
"Noted," Eren said.
"Good." Zerith looked at his line. It was moving. He pulled, steady and unhurried, and what came up was not small.
He looked at it. He looked at Eren's bucket.
"I believe," he said, "that we have enough."
The camp was assembled when they returned.
Not just assembled — inhabited, which was different. The distinction was what happened between a space being set up and a space being used by people who had decided to be in it for a week. Tents in a ring around the fire pit. Folding chairs and sections of log and a flat stone that someone had rolled to a useful position. Gus's work station near the fire where a surface had been produced from somewhere and ingredients were arranged on it with the specific organization of someone who had opinions about the relationship between preparation and outcome.
Arlo was in his chair. He appeared to be asleep. The camp had been assembled around him.
Milo was writing.
Shirou was sitting near the fire with his pipe — lit now, the smoke moving at the correct angle, the bowl's ember steady. He was looking at the fire with the expression he looked at most things with, which was nothing particular, which somehow communicated more than nothing.
Leila was at the river's edge, not fishing, just standing with her hands at her sides and the fire element at its lowest output in her palms, warming her fingers. She turned when Eren and Zerith came back and looked at the bucket.
"That's more than I expected," she said.
"Zerith knew a spot," Eren said.
She looked at Zerith. Something moved in her expression — the specific expression she produced when information had been filed in a particular category. She turned back to the fire.
"Gus," Eren called.
Gus appeared from behind his work station with the immediate quality of someone who had been waiting for exactly this. He looked in the bucket. He looked at the fish. Something in his open face settled — the expression of a person who had been given the right material and knew what to do with it.
"Perfect," he said. He took the bucket. "Twenty minutes."
It was thirty. Nobody mentioned this, because what arrived at thirty minutes was worth the difference, and because Gus's relationship with time estimates was well understood by everyone in the Shadows team and had long since been accepted as a feature rather than a flaw.
They ate as the light went.
The river was visible from the fire — the surface of it catching the last of the afternoon color, going dark as the trees swallowed the direct light and left only what filtered down through the canopy. The food was what Gus's food always was, which was to say it was the thing he had made from available materials and those materials had been given every consideration they were capable of receiving. Betham ate with the particular attention of someone who had been away from Gus's cooking for six months and was reacquainting himself with the loss. Raphael had already finished his first portion and was approaching the question of a second with the casual certainty of someone who had decided the question had only one answer.
Cain ate without looking at anything in particular. He was sitting on the flat stone, not the logs or the chairs, the specific choice of someone who did not require comfort and was not performing discomfort either. Just sitting. Eating. Present.
Eren looked at him once across the fire.
He looked at the neck tattoo. At the hands that had found a man and had done what they had done and had then spent years looking for something that had not been found yet. He looked at Cain with the specific knowledge of a thing Zerith had told him upstream and which sat differently in his chest now than it would have before he knew it.
He looked away.
He did not bring it up.
The fire burned down from its cooking height to its sitting height, which was lower and more orange and moved with the slow rhythm of something that had been going long enough to settle into itself. Someone added wood and it built back up briefly and then settled again. The river was a sound now more than a sight, the dark having taken the surface and left the movement.
Nicholas had his pipe out — unlit, held in his hand, the habit of it. He was looking at the fire. The right eye caught the flame at its correct angle and the veins of it were visible, the crimson warm rather than cold in the firelight, which was a different quality than they usually had.
"Avent," Betham said.
Avent opened his eyes.
He had been in the specific quality of rest that was his baseline — not sleep, not absence, just the conservation of a person who expended nothing unnecessarily and was therefore always ready when the expenditure was asked for. He looked at Betham with the alert calm of someone who had been listening to everything that had been said since they sat down.
"Story," Betham said.
Something moved across Avent's face. Not a smile. Something more considered than a smile, the expression of someone who had been thinking about exactly this and had been waiting to be asked.
He reached into his coat.
He set them on the flat stone in front of him.
Three puppets.
Not the small one he usually carried — these were different. Larger. Each one roughly the size of a forearm, dressed in miniature black robes with silver embroidery along the collar. Academy uniforms, first-year cut. Their faces were carved wood, painted, and the painting was the detail that made you look twice — the features precise in a way that puppet features were not usually precise, each one a different face, each one specific enough to be a person without being any particular person.
He set them in a row on the stone.
He looked at them for a moment.
Then he looked at the fire. Then at the group around it.
When he spoke, his voice was different from the voice he used when he spoke normally — which was rarely and briefly. This voice was lower. Not quiet, not dramatic. Low in the specific way of someone who understood that the right frequency entered the ear differently than raised volume and stayed longer once it was there.
"Three students," he said.
He picked up the first puppet. He held it so the firelight caught its face.
"First year. Shadows. They had been in the Academy for two months." He set it back down. He picked up the second. "They were good. All three of them. The kind of good that made their instructors think about what they would become." He set the second down. The third.
"That was the problem, maybe. The good ones always want to find the edges of things."
He set the third puppet down. He looked at the fire.
"They found a door," he said.
"Not a hidden door. Not behind a tapestry, not down a corridor that only appeared at midnight. Just a door — plain wood, iron handle, set into a wall in the Academy's lower east passage that none of them had noticed before, which should not have been possible because they had walked that passage every day for two months."
Avent picked up the first puppet.
He moved it with the practiced ease of someone for whom the puppet was an extension of the hand rather than an object in the hand — the movement natural, the weight distributed, the puppet walking across the flat stone surface with a gait that had weight to it, that had presence.
"The first one tried the handle."
The puppet stopped. The hand moved. The puppet's small arm extended.
"It opened."
The puppet stepped forward off the stone's edge. Avent caught it. He held it at the stone's level, as if it had descended a step.
"Inside: a corridor. Narrow. Stone floor, the same stone as the rest of the Academy. No torches — but not dark. The light had no source. It was simply there, faint and grey, the kind of light that let you see without telling you where the seeing was coming from."
He set the first puppet down at the far edge of the stone.
"They all went in. Of course they did."
He moved the second puppet to follow. Then the third.
"The corridor went down. Not steeply — gradually, the way certain things descended without wanting you to notice the descent until you were far enough down that noticing it changed the calculation of going back."
The puppets moved across the stone. One step. Another.
"They talked. The way people talked when they were somewhere they weren't supposed to be and were covering the unease with sound." Avent's voice was what it was — low, steady, moving through the group around the fire the way the river moved, finding its level. "The first one made a joke. The second one laughed. The third one said the corridor smelled wrong."
He stopped the third puppet.
"Wrong how? the first one asked."
"Like something that hasn't moved in a long time," Avent said. He did not change his voice for the dialogue. He did not need to. "Like a room that has been sealed."
"All old corridors smell like that," the second one said."
"The third one didn't answer."
Avent picked up the third puppet. He held it for a moment, looking at its face.
"She was the first to hear it."
He put the puppet down.
"Not a sound. Not exactly. More like the awareness of a sound — the way you became aware of a sound that had been there for some time and had been below the threshold of what registered as sound and had just crossed it. Like something breathing. Not one breath. Not the rhythm of an animal or a person. Something irregular. The kind of irregular that was not random but was deliberate, the way a pattern could be made to look like no pattern to something that was examining it for patterns."
The fire shifted. A log settled. The orange light moved across the puppets on the stone.
"The first one said: do you hear that?"
"The second one said: no."
"The first one stopped walking."
Avent stopped the first puppet.
"The second and third went on a few steps before they noticed." He moved them forward. Stopped them. "They turned back. The first one was standing in the corridor looking at the wall to the right."
"What is it?"
"The first one didn't answer."
Silence.
Around the fire, nobody moved. Gus had set down whatever he'd been holding. Lussal was looking at the puppets with the grey eyes very still. Rendia had her arms crossed and her jaw was set in the specific way of someone who was telling themselves they were not affected by a story told with wooden figures around a campfire and was not fully succeeding.
Raphael was very quiet.
"The first one reached out," Avent said, "and put their hand against the wall."
The puppet's arm moved.
"The wall was warm."
A pause.
"Not the warmth of stone that has been in a building where people live and the heat of them has seeped slowly in over years. The warmth of something on the other side. Something that had been pressed against the stone for long enough that its heat had come through."
"There's something on the other side," the first one said."
"It's a wall," the second one said. There's nothing on the other side of a wall."
"The first one's hand was still against the stone."
"It moved," they said. I felt it move."
Avent picked up the first puppet.
He held it at the edge of the stone.
"The second one took the first one's arm. They pulled them away from the wall. They kept walking. The first one came, but they kept looking back."
He set the puppet back. He moved all three forward.
"Further down. The corridor leveled out. It opened into a room."
The puppets stopped at the edge of the stone, as if standing at a threshold.
"A round room. Low ceiling. The same sourceless grey light. In the center of the floor, a circle — not carved, not painted. Worn. The kind of worn that came from years of use, of something moving in that circle, of something that had been in that circle long enough that its movement had left a physical record in the stone."
Avent looked at the fire.
"They stood at the entrance and looked at the circle."
"We should go back," the third one said."
"The second one was already walking toward the circle."
He moved the second puppet forward. Across the stone. To its center.
"Don't—" the third one started."
"The second one stood in the circle. They looked down at the worn stone. They looked up."
"Nothing happened."
"See?" they said. Nothing here. Old room, old marks, that's all."
"The first one came in. They walked to the circle. They stood in it beside the second one."
He moved the first puppet forward.
"The third one stayed at the entrance."
"Come in," the first one said. Stop being scared."
"I'm not scared."
"Then come in."
Avent looked at the third puppet. He did not move it.
"The third one took one step forward. Just one."
He moved it. Slightly. Just off the edge.
"The light went out."
He cupped his hand over the first two puppets.
Total darkness over them. The firelight hit his hand and not the puppets.
"Not gradually. Not the way a torch went out. All of it, at once. The corridor, the room, the sourceless grey — gone. Complete dark."
"The third one stopped."
"They heard the second one say something. Not words — the beginning of words, one syllable, the kind that preceded a sentence that was going to be what just happened or I can't see or any of the ordinary things a person said when ordinary disorientation arrived."
"Just the beginning."
"Then nothing from the second one."
"Then nothing from the first one."
"Then just the third one, standing at the entrance of a dark room in a corridor underground, and the darkness, and the silence, and the smell — that smell, the one that had been wrong since they came in — now everywhere. Now close."
Avent removed his hand.
The first two puppets were on their sides.
He had done it without anyone seeing him do it — his hand cupped over them and when the hand lifted they were down, not standing, lying on the stone with the small carved faces looking at nothing.
"The third one called their names."
"No answer."
"They called again."
"The stone gave the sound back without any answer in it."
"They ran."
He picked up the third puppet. He moved it fast, back across the stone, the gait broken now, nothing of the smooth deliberate movement from before.
"They ran the way the corridor went — up, back the way they had come, the dark total and the floor the only thing they had, their hand on the wall for reference, running."
"They ran until they hit the door."
The puppet struck the stone's edge.
"They got through it."
"They were in the lower east passage. The Academy. Torches in brackets. The smell of stone and old air. Everything exactly as it had always been."
Avent set the puppet down.
"They went back with others. Instructors. Senior hunters."
He looked at the fire.
"The corridor was not there."
A silence.
"The wall was a wall. No door, no handle, no seam. Just stone."
"They searched for three days. Every measurement was checked. Every passage was walked. The lower east passage was the length it had always been and the stone was the stone it had always been and there was no corridor and there was no room and there were no marks on any floor in the shape of a circle."
He looked at the third puppet.
"The other two were never found."
He looked at it for a moment longer.
"The third one had been in Shadows for two months," he said. "They transferred out the following week. A different division. A different tower. They never walked the lower east passage again."
He picked up the two fallen puppets.
He put all three back in his coat.
"The Academy has a lower east passage," he said. His voice was what it always was now — brief, flat, the conserved register of someone returning to baseline. "You have all walked it."
He closed his eyes.
Around the fire, nobody said anything for a moment.
The river moved in the dark.
The fire burned.
Raphael was looking at the space where the puppets had been. His food was still in his hand and he had forgotten about it.
Lussal had his arms on his knees and was looking at the ground.
Rendia was looking at the treeline.
Nicholas had the unlit pipe between his fingers and was looking at the fire with the right eye's veins very visible in the firelight.
Betham said, finally, in a voice that was entirely flat: "I hate that story."
"You've heard it before?" Milo asked. His notebook was closed.
"No." Betham looked at Avent, whose eyes were still closed. "I hate it anyway."
Shirou lit his pipe.
The smoke moved in the right direction and then the wrong direction and then settled.
Gus, very quietly, began putting things away from the work station. He did it in the specific way he did things when the moment called for something ordinary to be present — not filling the silence, just being in it alongside everyone else, the small sounds of his work a kind of company.
Leila was looking at the fire.
"The lower east passage," she said. She said it to no one, or to herself, or to the fire. "I walked it this morning."
Nobody responded.
The fire burned.
The river moved.
Above the treeline, where the clouds had thinned, the moon was visible — full, pale, the light of it coming through the gap in the canopy and touching the edge of the camp in the specific way that moonlight touched things it was not asked to illuminate.
On its surface, the silhouette had not moved.
It was watching.
It was always watching.
Dusk looked up at it from his tent's entrance, the shadow two seconds ahead of him in the moonlight, reading the night before he arrived in it.
He looked at the moon for a long time.
Then he looked at the camp — at the fire, at the people around it, at the particular quality of a group that had earned a week and was using it, and at the specific quality that existed underneath that, the weight that did not fully go away even when there was nowhere particular it needed to be.
He went back inside his tent.
The camp was quiet.
The first night of the week passed, and the river moved through it, and the moon watched everything below with the patience of something that had nearly finished waiting.
