Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Under the Same Spotlight

The invitation arrived the next morning.

It was placed neatly on the breakfast table, aligned with the cutlery as if it had always belonged there. Cream-colored cardstock. Minimalist font. The name Lu Shen printed with quiet authority.

Xiaoyu recognized it immediately.

A charity gala.

She didn't touch it at first. She finished her tea, folded her napkin, and only then picked it up.

"You're attending with me," Lu Shen said, not looking up from his tablet.

It wasn't a question.

"I assumed," she replied.

"This will be your first public appearance as Mrs. Lu."

She glanced at him. "Is there a script?"

His fingers paused briefly before resuming their movement across the screen. "You stand beside me. You speak when spoken to. You don't engage unnecessarily."

"And if someone insists?"

"You deflect."

"And if they don't let me?"

"Then I will intervene."

Xiaoyu nodded slowly. "So I'm visible, but not present."

"That's one way to put it."

She smiled faintly. "Efficient."

The preparation was exhaustive.

Madam Chen supervised everything—from the dress selection to Xiaoyu's posture as she walked across the room. Every detail mattered. The fabric chosen was soft but structured, elegant without being inviting. It covered enough to suggest restraint, yet revealed enough to be admired.

"You must remember," Madam Chen said while adjusting the clasp at Xiaoyu's back, "you represent Mr. Lu now."

Xiaoyu met her reflection in the mirror.

The woman staring back looked composed. Polished. Almost confident.

She barely recognized herself.

"Do I represent myself at all?" Xiaoyu asked quietly.

Madam Chen hesitated. "That depends on how well you play your role."

The venue glowed with money and influence.

Crystal lights. Soft music. Conversations layered with laughter that didn't quite reach the eyes. When Lu Shen stepped inside, attention shifted almost immediately.

Xiaoyu felt it—the subtle turn of heads, the quiet evaluation.

Lu Shen offered his arm. She took it.

His touch was light. Controlled. More symbolic than intimate.

They moved through the crowd like a single unit, perfectly synchronized. People greeted them, smiles sharp and practiced.

"So this is Mrs. Lu."

"You're even more beautiful than the rumors suggest."

Lu Shen responded smoothly. Xiaoyu smiled when expected. Nodded when required.

She felt like a display piece.

Then she noticed the woman watching them.

She stood near the bar, glass in hand, her posture relaxed in a way that spoke of familiarity. Her gaze lingered on Lu Shen—not curious, but assessing.

Xiaoyu recognized that look.

History.

The woman approached.

"Shen," she said warmly. "You didn't mention you'd gotten married."

Lu Shen's grip tightened—just slightly.

"Lin Mei," he replied. "This is my wife."

Xiaoyu met her gaze directly.

Lin Mei was beautiful in a way that felt effortless. Confident. Established. She belonged in this world.

"So you're Mrs. Lu," Lin Mei said, smiling. "Interesting."

Xiaoyu returned the smile. "Is it?"

"You're… different from what I imagined."

"What did you imagine?" Xiaoyu asked calmly.

Lin Mei laughed. "Someone more predictable."

Lu Shen stepped in. "This isn't the time."

"Of course," Lin Mei said lightly. Her eyes flicked back to Xiaoyu. "Take good care of him."

When she walked away, the air felt heavier.

"You didn't need to entertain that conversation," Lu Shen said quietly.

"She spoke to me," Xiaoyu replied. "Ignoring her would've been rude."

"She's not important."

"Then why did your hand tighten?"

He stopped walking.

For a moment, the noise of the room faded.

"You're overanalyzing," he said.

"Maybe," Xiaoyu said. "Or maybe I just noticed something you didn't want noticed."

They continued moving through the crowd, but something had shifted.

Lu Shen was no longer entirely composed.

And Xiaoyu—

was no longer invisible.

The ride home was silent.

The city lights streaked past the windows, blurring into gold and white. Xiaoyu watched them, her reflection faint against the glass.

"You handled yourself adequately," Lu Shen said at last.

"Adequately," she repeated.

"Yes."

She turned to face him. "Is that the highest praise available?"

"This isn't about praise."

"Everything seems to be about control," she replied.

He didn't answer immediately.

"You're learning quickly," he said instead.

"That wasn't my intention."

"But it's happening."

The car stopped.

At home, Xiaoyu removed her heels slowly, her feet aching. Lu Shen watched her from across the room, his gaze lingering longer than necessary.

"You surprised me tonight," he said.

She looked up. "How?"

"You didn't shrink."

She straightened. "Was I expected to?"

"No," he said. "But I assumed you might."

That honesty startled them both.

"Careful," Xiaoyu said softly. "Assumptions create blind spots."

His eyes darkened.

"I don't have blind spots."

She smiled. "Everyone does."

That night, Xiaoyu lay awake again.

But this time, the tightness in her chest wasn't fear.

It was resolve.

Because for the first time since signing that contract, she understood something clearly.

This marriage wasn't just containing her.

It was beginning to challenge him.
