"Such an overwhelming sensory ability?"
"This isn't good!"
Orochimaru's expression shifted drastically. Shiro wasn't even attempting to conceal his presence; his goal was blatantly clear: eliminate all irrelevant variables from the board.
The moment he registered that suffocating aura, Orochimaru swiftly and decisively put as much distance between them as possible. He absolutely could not afford to be caught by the boy right now!
He wasn't the only one. Across the vast expanse of the forest, numerous sensitive individuals detected Shiro's unrestrained, sweeping sensory wave.
Deep within the foliage, Team 8—Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame—were advancing cautiously.
"Hmm." Shino abruptly halted his steps.
"What's wrong, Shino?" Kiba asked, stopping beside him with a curious frown.
It was important to remember that their entire squad specialized in tracking and sensory techniques. Therefore, picking up on an approaching threat was practically second nature to them.
"My kikaichu are panicking. They are telling me that a truly terrifying existence has just pinpointed our exact location," Shino stated, his usually calm voice laced with tension.
"Seriously?" Kiba blinked, momentarily stunned. Was it really that bad?
They had entered the Forest of Death through completely different gates. Logically, the starting points for all the teams should have kept them far apart for at least the first few hours!
"There is no mistake," Shino insisted, looking down at the violently trembling insects swarming over his fingertips. His expression beneath his high collar was incredibly solemn. This was the very first time he had ever witnessed his hive react with such primal terror.
"We need to run. Now! We have to make a break for the central tower as fast as possible!" Kiba urged, his survival instincts screaming at him.
At that specific moment, the objective of securing the Heaven and Earth scrolls completely vanished from their minds. After all, what good was a passing grade if you didn't have your life to enjoy it?
"Wait a moment, let me scout the perimeter with my Byakugan first!" Hinata offered, channeling chakra to her eyes to activate her visual prowess.
In hindsight, it would have been infinitely better for her peace of mind if she hadn't looked. Her sweeping vision immediately locked onto a figure standing perfectly still on a thick branch directly in their planned escape path, waiting quietly for them to approach.
If she were given the choice to do it over, Hinata would have definitely kept her Byakugan deactivated.
"Well, what a coincidence," a calm voice drifted down from the canopy. "Tell me, are you three going to politely knock yourselves out, or am I going to have to do it for you?"
The moment Shiro's figure dropped gracefully from the high branch, landing softly before them, the remaining courage of Team 8 completely shattered.
"We won't just—!"
Before Kiba could even finish his defiant shout, a blurringly fast impact caught him squarely in the chest, sending him violently airborne. He skipped across the forest floor and only came to a jarring halt when his back slammed hard against a massive tree trunk.
"Kiba!" Shino and Hinata cried out, completely caught off guard by Shiro's explosive speed. They hadn't even been able to track his movement!
"Gentle Fist Art: Eight Trigrams—" Hinata desperately assumed her clan's signature taijutsu stance, fully intending to strike at Shiro's chakra points to defend her teammates.
*Thwack!* Before her hyper-perceptive Byakugan could even register the incoming strike, a swift, calculated kick sent her tumbling backward through the underbrush.
"Secret Technique: Insect Wall!" Shino chanted, rapidly weaving signs to command his hive to form a defensive barrier around him.
He never got the chance. In the very next millisecond, a hand clamped down like a vice grip around his throat, lifting him slightly and cutting off his command.
In the span of a few ragged breaths, Shiro had effortlessly dismantled and incapacitated the entire tracking team.
"Oh, right. I almost forgot about the little guy," Shiro murmured, his gaze dropping to notice Akamaru, who was currently shivering violently by a nearby root, whining in distress.
"No, wait!" Kiba gasped from his slumped position against the tree, utterly horrified. He couldn't believe Shiro was ruthless enough to target a helpless puppy!
"Wait, please! We completely surrender! We'll hand over all our scrolls, just leave him alone!" Kiba pleaded desperately, trying to prevent his canine companion from taking a hit.
But Shiro flatly rejected the desperate proposal.
"In actual combat out in the field, a true enemy isn't going to stop and negotiate with you just because you yield," Shiro stated coldly.
With a precise, painless tap to a pressure point behind the puppy's ear, Shiro rendered Akamaru instantly unconscious, catching the small dog before he hit the ground.
One couldn't really blame Shiro for completely disregarding their shared academy history or any supposed bonds of camaraderie. According to his rigorous standards, the current iteration of the 'Konoha 12' was sorely lacking in actual combat readiness. They were still treating this lethal profession with a naive, 'playing house' mentality, and that simply wouldn't cut it in the real world.
Shiro possessed absolute control over his own strength. So, although his rapid-fire takedowns had appeared brutal and imposing... in reality, he had meticulously avoided striking any of their vital points or causing lasting damage.
"You three should count yourselves incredibly lucky that you ran into me first. If you had stumbled across a certain snake-eyed psychopath lurking in these woods, your fate would have been significantly more gruesome."
After casually relieving Shino and the groggy Kiba of their mission scrolls, Shiro turned his attention back to the sole kunoichi of the group. He reached into his pouch and surprisingly left behind a high-grade Blood-Replenishing Pill and a small tin of soothing medicinal salve beside the dazed Hinata.
As for why he exclusively provided medical aid to the Hyuga heiress and ignored the other two? Well, they were boys. Enduring a little physical hardship and pain builds character, after all.
"Th-thank you," Hinata whispered subconsciously, instinctively bowing her head slightly as she clutched the medicine tin.
The polite, ingrained response to her attacker almost made Shiro laugh out loud.
However, her ability to remain conscious and speak clearly also highlighted that Hinata's baseline physical conditioning was actually quite a bit more robust than her two male teammates. It was a testament to her grueling, daily practice of the Gentle Fist taijutsu style.
With a final nod, Shiro flickered away, vanishing completely from their sight.
"Argh, damn it... that hurts!" Kiba hissed through gritted teeth. Enduring the throbbing pain in his chest, he forced himself to stand up and frantically checked on his canine partner's condition. "Thank goodness... Akamaru is just knocked out. He's not actually hurt."
It didn't take long for Shiro's overwhelmingly powerful sensory net to lock onto another prime target.
Deep within the dense, shadowed canopy of the eastern sector of the Forest of Death, the Genin trio from the Hidden Sound Village was currently advancing with extreme, paranoid caution. They knew, deep in their bones, that Shiro would inevitably come hunting for them.
"Are we seriously just going to tuck our tails between our legs and give up on Lord Orochimaru's explicit mission orders like this?" Zaku complained, his face twisting with bitter resentment. In his arrogant mind, Dosu was acting like a pathetic coward. Why the hell was their leader so terrified to face off against Shiro?
"Shut your mouth!" Dosu hissed, snapping at his teammate directly. It was easy for Zaku to act tough when he wasn't the one who had been helplessly hoisted into the air by his throat, staring directly into the abyss of those cold, dead eyes! There was a very good reason Dosu hadn't dared to provoke the monster further.
"Hmph. I don't care what you say. If I ever cross paths with that arrogant Konoha brat again, I will personally blow him to pieces for Lord Orochimaru!" Zaku boasted loudly, clenching his modified fists.
Just as the last syllable left Zaku's mouth, a chillingly familiar voice drifted through the trees.
"Is that so? Well then, there's truly no time like the present to back up those words."
"Shiro?!"
"It's Shiro!"
The entire Sound trio turned instantly pale, the blood draining from their faces in abject fear.
"Decapitating Airwaves!" Zaku roared in a panic. He raised both of his modified palms, gathering a massive amount of ultrasonic energy through his air tubes, and forcefully swung them forward. He unleashed a devastating, pressurized sonic blast that violently sliced through the air toward the source of the voice.
*BOOM!* The sheer kinetic impact of the localized hurricane ripped through the foliage, sending thick tree trunks crashing down in all directions and kicking up a massive cloud of dust.
*Clap, clap, clap.* The sound of slow, sarcastic applause echoed through the clearing. Shiro casually stepped out from the settling dust cloud, casually brushing a few stray leaves from his immaculate clothing.
"How... how is that even possible?!" Zaku shrieked, looking as if he had just witnessed the laws of physics break before his very eyes. "My Decapitating Airwaves tear through solid rock! How are you completely unharmed?!"
It wasn't even a question of whether taking a point-blank sonic blast to the face hurt or not. Thanks to his newly acquired *Chakra Body Refining Technique*, there was simply zero structural damage inflicted upon his body whatsoever!
"It seems your timing is quite impeccable," Shiro smirked, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "Didn't your beloved master Orochimaru order you to test me? Well, here I am. Come and get me."
Shiro simply stood there, perfectly still, yet the suffocating, dense chakra pressure he passively exerted bore down on the Sound genin like the weight of a collapsing mountain.
"Attack him! All at once! It's the only way we might have a fraction of a chance to survive this!" Dosu roared, his single visible eye filled with gloomy desperation.
Hearing their leader's frantic command, Zaku and Kin realized the grim reality of their situation. There was no outrunning this monster. Fleeing would only guarantee a swift death.
Biting down their terror, the three Sound ninja synchronized their movements, pooling their specialized jutsu to launch a desperate, coordinated assault against Shiro.
"Far too slow," Shiro sighed, shaking his head.
With a casual, almost lazy Body Flicker, Shiro vanished and instantaneously materialized directly in front of the two closest attackers.
Just as Zaku raised his arms to unleash his ultimate sonic blast, Shiro ruthlessly crushed the boy's modified air tubes and shattered his forearms with a single, devastating palm strike.
Without pausing his momentum, Shiro pivoted gracefully and delivered a brutal roundhouse kick to Kin's midsection, sending the kunoichi flying like a broken doll over a dozen meters away into the brush.
Against standard Genin fodder like these two, Shiro didn't even need to waste chakra on ninjutsu; basic, overwhelming taijutsu was more than sufficient.
"Dosu! You bastard... *pfft!*" Zaku coughed up a spray of blood, watching helplessly from the dirt as the horrifying truth dawned on him. Dosu hadn't joined the coordinated attack at all.
Instead, their pragmatic leader had used them as sacrificial bait to buy himself a few seconds to turn and flee blindly into the woods alone. As he scrambled away in absolute terror, Dosu frantically tossed all of his team's mission scrolls behind him into the dirt, desperately hoping the offering would prevent Shiro from hunting him down.
The light in Zaku's pupils began to dim rapidly, his final moments consumed by the bitter, unwilling resentment of being betrayed and discarded by his own comrade.
"No... stay back! Don't come any closer!"
The only remaining, conscious member of the trio, Kin Tsuchi, clutched her bruised ribs and screamed in pure terror as she watched Shiro's boots step over her fallen teammate, slowly making his way toward her.
