The coordinates the seal had provided were directional rather than temporal, the location defined by its relationship to the Laws and formations in this part of the Middle Domain rather than by a distance that required a specific travel time. He had not known whether stopping for the night-equivalent period was necessary or whether the walking could be continuous.

He found that continuous walking through the night-equivalent was possible but produced a different quality of observation than the alternating pattern of the previous days. The night-equivalent's cooler luminosity showed him the formations' internal variation in the way it had during the nights he had spent observing rather than moving. Walking through formations at night-equivalent quality while also covering ground was a different mode from either stationary night observation or daytime walking.
