Chapter 87 - The first kill

CHAPTER 2 — THE FIRST KILL

Leylin did not step forward again.

He stayed where he was as his eyes remained on the stream. The surface had already stilled, but he did not trust it. Not after that. Not after how fast it moved.

His throat burned.

Thirst had not lessened. It pressed harder now, sharper, more insistent. His tongue felt dry against his teeth as he swallowed and felt nothing ease.

Water.

The thought returned, but slower this time. Not blind. Not desperate.

Leylin lowered himself slightly as his knees bent, bringing his center down. His hand moved as he reached for the ground, fingers brushing against loose soil until they closed around a small stone. He weighed it briefly, turning it once between his fingers as his gaze never left the stream.

If it reacts to movement...

He flicked the stone forward as his wrist snapped lightly. The stone cut through the air, arcing low as it dropped toward the surface.

It hit.

A small splash. Ripples spread outward.

Nothing followed.

Leylin did not relax.

He reached down again as his fingers searched the ground, picking another stone, slightly larger this time. He shifted his stance as his feet adjusted against the soil, then threw again.

The stone struck deeper this time.

The reaction came instantly.

The water exploded upward as the creature tore through it, jaws snapping toward the disturbance. Its body surfaced just enough this time for Leylin to see it clearly. Long. Thick. Scaled. Its mouth stretched too wide, lined with jagged teeth that did not fit cleanly together. Its eyes were small, set too far back, dull but locked onto movement.

Then it dropped back again.

Gone.

Leylin exhaled once as his grip loosened slightly.

Not blind.

It tracks impact.

His gaze shifted along the stream as he studied the flow. The water curved slightly downstream, narrowing between two clusters of rock where the current sped up. The surface there broke constantly, uneven, harder to read.

Less predictable.

Better.

He moved.

Not toward the center.

Around.

Leylin stepped along the edge as his feet pressed into the soil, careful where he placed his weight. He kept distance from the waterline, just enough to move without casting a clear disturbance. Branches brushed his shoulder as he passed, leaves catching lightly against his arm before slipping away.

His eyes stayed on the stream.

Watching.

Measuring.

The sound of water grew louder as he approached the narrowed section. The current broke harder here, splashing lightly against stone, distorting the surface enough to hide what lay beneath.

Leylin slowed as he reached it.

His throat tightened again.

He crouched as his knees bent, lowering himself closer to the ground. One hand pressed into the soil to steady himself while the other hovered slightly forward. He leaned in as his eyes tracked the water, waiting.

Nothing moved.

He extended his hand.Slowly.Carefully.

His fingers reached the surface as they hovered just above it for a brief second, then dipped in.Cold.The sensation ran up his arm instantly. Real. Sharp.

He did not pull back immediately.

He held it there for a fraction longer, watching the current break around his skin, waiting for the reaction.None came.

Leylin moved faster. His hand cupped as he dragged water upward, bringing it toward his mouth as his body leaned in. He drank.

The first swallow hit hard.Cold water ran down his throat as his body reacted instantly, pulling more as he swallowed again, then again. He stopped himself before it became reckless, pulling back as his hand dropped.

He stayed still...listening.

Nothing broke the surface.Good.

Leylin exhaled quietly as the tightness in his chest eased slightly. The burning in his throat dulled, not gone, but manageable now.

He rose slowly as his legs straightened beneath him.Water solved one problem. It did not solve the rest.Food.

The thought came naturally.

His body felt lighter after drinking, but the weakness had not disappeared. It sat deeper now, quieter, but present.

He turned away from the stream as his gaze shifted toward the forest ahead.Movement.Not obvious. But there.

Leaves disturbed in a pattern that did not match the wind. A faint shift between two trunks, low to the ground, controlled.

Leylin stilled.

He lowered his stance slightly as his weight shifted forward, eyes narrowing as he focused on the space between the trees.

There.Something moved again.Small.Fast.Not the thing in the water.Different.

Leylin's hand moved slowly as he reached down again, fingers closing around another stone. This one heavier. Solid.

He did not throw immediately. He watched.

The movement came again, clearer this time. A small creature slipped between the roots of a tree, its body low, fur dark enough to blend with the shadows. Its ears twitched once as it paused, then moved again, unaware.

Leylin adjusted his footing as his back foot shifted slightly, grounding him. His arm drew back as his grip tightened around the stone.

Distance.Angle.He exhaled once.Then he threw.

The stone cut through the air, straight and fast.It hit.

A sharp crack followed as the creature jerked violently, its body collapsing against the base of the tree. It twitched once, twice, then stilled.

Silence returned...leylin did not move immediately. He watched the body.Waiting.No movement followed.

He stepped forward as his pace remained controlled, each step measured as he approached. The forest felt quieter here, as if watching, but he did not slow.

He reached the creature as he stopped just short of it.

Up close, it was smaller than it first appeared. Lean. Its body built for speed rather than strength. The point of impact had caved part of its skull in, the stone lodged partially where it struck.Clean.

Leylin crouched as his knees bent again. His hand reached out, hovering briefly before he touched it.Warm.The heat had not left it yet.

He studied it for a moment longer, then his fingers tightened slightly as he gripped the stone and pulled it free. Blood followed, darker than expected, thicker.

He did not react.Food.The thought came again, firmer this time. But something else lingered beneath it.

A faint pull.Not physical.Deeper.

Leylin's gaze sharpened slightly as he focused inward, sensing it. It did not come from the body in his hands. It came from what had just ended.

Faint. But there. He stilled as he followed it, not moving, not interrupting it. The sensation brushed against him once, then again, like something trying to settle.

Then..A flicker.

[Host Action Registered]

[First Kill Achieved]

The blue panel surfaced again.

Leylin did not look away from the body. His grip remained steady. But this time..He didn't ignore it.
