Route 8 felt remarkably consistent with the previous stretches of Kanto—lush, vibrant grass, sweeping views of the horizon, and an endless stream of trainers eager to test their mettle. For some inexplicable reason, this particular stretch of road seemed to be a magnet for fire-type enthusiasts who also happened to be bikers. It was a bizarre demographic crossover, but one that provided me with plenty of experience.
Most of the bikers challenged me with Growlithe, Vulpix, or Ponyta. It was a strange observation, considering I hadn't actually spotted any of those species in the wild on this route yet, but they proved to be manageable opponents. I spent most of the journey alternating between my team to keep everyone sharp. Meowth, in particular, was becoming a standout. He utilized his natural agility and quick reflexes to dance around incoming Embers and Fire Fangs, retaliating with precise strikes of Pay Day, Night Slash, or Fury Swipes. He often used Quick Attack to close the distance, a style that felt fundamentally different from Axew's. While the dragon hits with the force of a landslide, he is undeniably slower; Meowth hits like a lightning strike and disengages just as fast.
Shellder had the easiest time of all. After a long string of difficult battles, it was finally enjoying a clear type advantage. Exeggcute was a different story. I rotated him in for a battle, and while he secured the win, it was anything but clean. The strategy was a grind: Leech Seed followed by Confusion, then Toxic, and finally Grassy Terrain to solidify the field. Exeggcute then used Reflect and Confusion to mitigate and counter attacks while the seeds and poison did the heavy lifting. Whenever a stray fire attack managed to connect, he would simply use Giga Drain, which, combined with the Leech Seed effect, healed him almost instantly. It was a grueling ten-minute war of attrition against a Growlithe that left the biker looking incredibly salty. Feeling a bit bad for the guy, I gave him an Antidote that Meowth had scavenged earlier to help his Pokémon recover.
As for Axew, he essentially bulldozed through entire teams with such ease that I stopped using him after the first two battles. I didn't want him getting complacent or over-leveled for the route's tier.
It was as I was nearing the outskirts of Lavender Town that I finally spotted a Vulpix in the wild. I hadn't quite decided on which fire-type would eventually join my permanent roster, but this seemed like a perfect opportunity. Wait, am I catching Pokémon too quickly? I wondered briefly, but the impulse won out. I decided to try for it.
The Vulpix looked at me, and I looked back, reaching for Shellder's Pokéball. Before I could even click the release, the fox turned and bolted into the tall grass.
I took off after it, inadvertently sprinting off the main pathway. The chase led me through a dense cluster of trees, the light dimming as the canopy thickened. Finally, I reached a small, quiet clearing where the Vulpix had stopped. Suddenly, a massive Ninetales stepped out from behind the trees, shielding the smaller fox.
The Ninetales radiated a level of power that was frankly terrifying. Just from its sheer presence, a cold knot of dread formed in my stomach. I had a sickeningly clear feeling that even if I released all my Pokémon at once and fought with everything I had, I would lose. This wasn't just a wild Pokémon; this was an elite entity, a creature of legend. I genuinely felt a flicker of fear for my life—this was exactly the kind of "Extreme Danger" scenario I had studied during my trainer exams.
The Ninetales barked a few sharp sounds to the Vulpix, who chirped back, then turned its piercing gaze on me. "You seem to have the weirdest energy, kid."
"Energy?" I blurted out, before realizing the voice was inside my head. I blinked, stunned. "You... you can use telepathy?"
"By your baffled expression, I can guess you didn't expect I could communicate this way," the Ninetales responded, its voice calm and ancient. "Our line has been capable of wielding psychic and ghostly energies for centuries. As for what I meant—your body leaks a very rare type of energy, child."
"Is it... is it Aura energy?" I asked, my mind racing toward the lore of Lucario and the Aura Guardians.
"Energy is synonymous with life force, a projection of your nature," the Ninetales explained. "But do not confuse it with what an Aura Pokémon uses. Aura is a mutated, highly advanced form of energy that enhances the body and soul. Psychic energy is a mutation of the mind. In your case, while it is quite mild, you are leaking Dragon energy—a rarity among humans."
"Does that mean I have powers? Like a Pokémon?" I asked, a spark of excitement momentarily overriding my fear.
"With the amount you are currently leaking, I doubt you can do anything," the Ninetales said flatly. "I suspect it has barely awakened because you carry a Dragon-type with you. But compared to what a Psychic or an Aura Guardian wields, your power is paltry and insignificant."
I felt a bit deflated by the critique, but the reality of the situation quickly snapped back into focus. This thing could still end me in a heartbeat. I noticed my hands were shaking.
"Relax. I will not kill you. The only reason my daughter lured you here is that she saw something in your future and wanted me to confirm it. Normally, her abilities are quite accurate, but in your case, she saw only blurs."
My future? Before I could process the thought, Ninetales' eyes began to glow with a brilliant, supernatural light. Suddenly, my Pokéballs clicked open all at once. Axew, Shellder, Meowth, and Exeggcute burst out, immediately dropping into defensive battle stances around me.
"As I said, relax," the Ninetales repeated. "I am not interested in beating up younglings unless you wish to be unruly. It will be over in just one..."
The Ninetales paused mid-sentence. Her eyes stopped glowing, and she looked at me with a newfound sense of curiosity. "Interesting. Your existence actually dampens psychic effects to some extent. It is remarkably difficult to foresee your path. No wonder my daughter was so frustrated."
"May I ask... what did you see?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"The city you are headed to will change you as a person," the Ninetales said, its tone turning somber. "I would almost come with you to prevent it, but I have a pact with that town from a time long past that prevents me from entering. You will feel great mental pain, but you will emerge from it. When I tried to look further, a very dangerous, blighted psychic interference prevented me from seeing more. Whatever you encounter in the far future possesses absurd psychic ability... at least, that is all I could see."
I opened my mouth to ask about the "blight," but the Ninetales continued. "While I could keep you here for my own entertainment, your absence from that city might cause more problems for me than my curiosity is worth. Off you go."
"What did you mean—"
Before I could finish the sentence, a flash of white light blinded me. In the blink of an eye, the clearing and the Ninetales were gone. I found myself standing with all my Pokémon at the desolate outskirts of Lavender Town, the cold, purple-tinged fog already beginning to swirl around my ankles.

Lore(For readers):
The Ninetales, known in the oldest records as Shiromani, is an ancient entity that has roamed the Kanto region for over 800 years. She is far beyond the power scaling of a typical wild Pokémon, possessing a strength that allows her to stand on equal footing with the Ace of an Elite Four member. In the distant past, she was the partner of one of the most pivotal figures in Kanto's history, an individual whose influence helped reshape the region's laws and boundaries into their modern form.
Unlike most fire-types, Shiromani has transcended mere combustion; she is one of the few beings in existence to have grasped the "Essence of the True Flame," a primordial power usually reserved for legendary Pokémon like Moltres. Despite her overwhelming capability for destruction, she remains a distant observer due to a sacred non-aggression pact forged with Lavender Town centuries ago.
