The munitions facility rose from the wasteland like a monument to humanity's desperate ingenuity. Arthur stood at the perimeter fence, taking in the sheer scale of the complex. What should have been a modest research station sprawled across at least two square kilometers, its reinforced structures still intact despite decades of abandonment.
"Holy shit," Shifty's voice crackled through the comm. "Commander, this place is massive. I was expecting maybe a few buildings, but this... this is practically a military base."
"It is a military base," Exia's text appeared on Arthur's display, accompanied by her voice speaking simultaneously from her position with Protocol back at the Outpost. "Officially designated as Advanced Munitions Development Complex Seventy-Three. Construction completed in year forty-two of the First Rapture Invasion."
Arthur watched as both squads advanced through the main gate, weapons ready. The facility's layout appeared on his tactical display as Exia fed them reconnaissance data.
"Humanity invested heavily in weapon systems development during the invasion's middle years," Exia continued, her tone carrying the precise quality of someone reciting historical record. "This complex represents that effort. It remained operational until the final evacuation, producing experimental ordnance intended to counter Rapture evolution patterns."
"I... didn't know that," Shifty admitted.
A pause. Then Exia's text flashed: *This is common knowledge for anyone in Central Government operations.*
Arthur caught the subtle emphasis. Anis noticed it too, her expression tightening as she moved past him into the facility grounds.
"Per standard infiltration protocol," Exia said, "Alpha team will establish perimeter security while Bravo team conducts interior reconnaissance. Shifty, you should have already designated rally points and fall-back positions based on the facility layout I transmitted."
"I... yes, I'm looking at them now," Shifty replied, her voice uncertain.
"Thermal analysis indicates the central research building maintains structural integrity," Exia continued. "Bravo team should prioritize that location. Shifty, confirm ventilation system status for possible contamination hazards."
"Ventilation system... right, I'm checking."
"You should have checked before we entered," Exia stated flatly. "Intelligence Department protocol requires environmental assessment prior to personnel exposure."
Alisa moved closer to Arthur, her voice pitched low enough that only he could hear. "She's being pretty hard on Shifty, Commander."
Anis overheard anyway. "Exia's not wrong, though. Even the Intelligence Department forgets half their own protocols. I've seen operators mix up procedures all the time."
"True," Rapi said, surprising Arthur with her contribution. She was studying the facility with obvious interest. "But this is an opportunity. Exia has extensive field experience. Learning from her could improve our operational efficiency."
"Or," Anis countered with a grin, "Exia's trying to pawn off some of her work onto Shifty so she can slack off."
*EXIA: I can hear you, Anis.*
"I know!" Anis called cheerfully.
They moved deeper into the complex, passing between buildings that showed signs of hasty abandonment. Equipment lay scattered, some pieces still recognizable despite decades of decay. Arthur's boots crunched on broken glass as he followed Bravo team into the central research building.
The interior was surprisingly intact. Emergency lighting still functioned, powered by some long-lasting energy source that cast everything in a dim amber glow. Dust covered every surface, disturbed only by their passage.
"Got it!" Shifty's voice carried obvious relief. "Commander, I'm detecting the scanning device. Marking it on your map now."
A waypoint appeared on Arthur's display, highlighting a location three floors down.
*EXIA: I could have located it seven minutes faster, but decided Shifty should gain practical experience.*
"I'll try harder next time," Shifty muttered, just barely audible over the comm.
They descended through stairwells that echoed with their footsteps. The scanning device occupied a large chamber that might have once been a testing lab. V was the first to reach it, and Arthur heard her sharp intake of breath.
"It's enormous," V said, staring at the machine.
The scanning device dominated the room—a circular platform surrounded by sensor arrays and analysis equipment that stretched to the ceiling. It looked more like something designed to examine vehicles than individual objects.
*EXIA: Why is that surprising?*
V glanced at the nearest camera. "I expected something smaller. More portable."
"Pre-war technology prioritized capability over convenience," Exia explained. "This device can provide complete molecular analysis of any object placed on the platform. Composition, structure, energy signatures—everything."
Arthur approached the platform, drawing the translucent bullet from his coat pocket. Snow White's parting gift. The crimson substance inside seemed to catch the amber light, swirling with its own internal motion.
He placed it carefully at the platform's center.
"Initiating CombiLink," Arthur said, activating his Omni-Tool. The interface connected to the scanning device, ancient and modern technology bridging decades through compatible protocols.
The machine hummed to life, sensor arrays rotating into position around the bullet.
"Shifty, begin configuration sequence," Exia instructed.
"Right, configuration... I'm looking for the control parameters..." Shifty's voice carried stress. "There's so many options, I'm not sure which—"
*EXIA: Focus on finding the remaining mines instead. I'll handle this.*
Arthur heard the frustration in Shifty's silence, but didn't intervene. Whatever dynamic existed between the two operators needed to resolve itself.
The scanning device's activity increased, beams of light playing across the bullet's surface. Arthur watched data stream across his display, most of it incomprehensible without Exia's interpretation.
Then Shifty's voice cut through, urgent and clear: "Contact! Multiple Rapture signatures converging on our position!"
"All teams, defensive positions!" Arthur's command came instantly. "Protect the scanning device. We need those results."
The Monarks moved with practiced efficiency. Scarlet positioned Alpha team at the chamber's entrance, creating overlapping fields of fire. Rapi led Bravo team to elevated positions along the chamber's perimeter, using the sensor equipment as partial cover.
The Raptures came in a wave—mass-produced units, their numbers compensating for individual weakness. They poured through the corridors leading to the scanning chamber, drawn perhaps by the active technology or simply by hostile programming.
"Engage!" Scarlet's SMG opened up, the sound deafening in the enclosed space.
Arthur took position near the scanning platform, his Typhoon tracking targets as they appeared. The assault rifle's sustained fire cut through the Rapture advance, but more kept coming.
Lyra's sniper rifle boomed from an elevated catwalk, each shot dropping a Rapture with mechanical precision. Nyx stood beside her, using her rocket launcher selectively to destroy clusters that threatened to overwhelm their firing lines.
Anis laughed as her grenade launcher pumped explosive rounds into the corridor, turning it into a kill zone. "Come on! Is that all you've got?"
Alisa charged forward, her saw blades transforming from her arms. She carved through three Raptures in rapid succession, her movements almost too fast to follow. Sparks and oil sprayed across the floor as she danced through the enemy formation.
Rapi's voice remained calm as she coordinated Bravo team's defense. "Miranda, left corridor. Ocean, prepare to fire on my mark."
Ocean's rocket launcher spoke, the explosion collapsing part of the corridor and creating a temporary barrier of rubble. V was already moving through the chaos, her katana flashing as she eliminated Raptures that broke through the firing lines.
Flower fought beside Rapi, her golden armor catching the muzzle flashes as her SMG chattered. The two moved in perfect sync, covering each other's angles with the ease of long partnership.
Arthur's tactical display tracked the battle's progress. The Raptures kept coming, but his teams held firm. The scanning device continued its work behind them, oblivious to the violence.
Scarlet's voice cut through the combat chatter: "Commander, we're getting low on ammunition!"
"Hold position," Arthur ordered. "We're almost done."
A Rapture broke through Alisa's defense, charging directly for the scanning platform. Arthur intercepted it, his Omni-blade igniting as he stepped forward. The blade carved through its torso, and he followed with a point-blank burst from the Typhoon that sent it crashing backward.
Then, as suddenly as it began, the assault ended. The last Rapture fell to Lyra's rifle, and silence returned to the chamber. Smoke hung in the air, mixed with the acrid smell of discharged weapons and burning machinery.
"Clear," Rapi reported.
"All teams, status," Arthur ordered.
"Alpha, green," Scarlet confirmed.
"Bravo, operational," Rapi added.
A chime from the scanning device drew Arthur's attention. The analysis was complete.
"Reading results now," Exia said. Her voice carried a note of concentration as she processed the data. "Initial scan shows standard bullet composition. Copper jacket, lead core, conventional propellant residue."
Arthur stared at the bullet, at the crimson substance clearly visible inside it. "That can't be everything."
"Wait. There's an anomaly." Exia's typing became audible through the comm. "The red substance... the database identifies it as containing a component labeled 'Vapaus.' But there's no additional information. No chemical structure, no origin data, no associated research files."
"Vapaus?" Rapi repeated. "I've never heard of it."
No one else had either, judging by the expressions Arthur saw around him.
*EXIA: I'm initiating a comprehensive search across all Ark databases. Medical, military, scientific, historical—everything. If there's any information about Vapaus anywhere in our systems, I'll find it.*
"How long?" Arthur asked.
*EXIA: Unknown. Could be hours. Could be days if the data is fragmented or archived.*
Arthur retrieved the bullet from the scanning platform, tucking it back into his coat. They had a name now. Vapaus. It wasn't much, but it was more than they'd had before.
"Mission complete," he announced. "All teams, prepare to withdraw. Let's go home."
As the Monarks filed out of the chamber, Arthur lingered for a moment, looking back at the scanning device. Snow White had known what this substance was, had known its significance. She'd given him the bullet for a purpose.
Vapaus. A strange word for a stranger substance.
And somewhere in the Ark's vast databases, buried or hidden or deliberately erased, lay the truth about what it really meant.
