Chapter 270 - Dawn of Sovereignty

The plummet into the abyss felt eternal, a chaotic whirl of dust, debris, and disorienting darkness. Arthur's stomach lurched as gravity claimed them, his goddesium prosthetic legs kicking futilely against the void. Scarlet's grip tightened around him, her body twisting with practiced precision to shield him from the impending impact. Her tactical outfit pressed against his coat, her breath hot on his neck as she whispered, "I've got you, Commander." The Matis Nikkes—Maxwell, Laplace, and Drake—tumbled nearby, their cries echoing off the fracturing walls.

The ground rushed up to meet them in a jarring collision. Scarlet absorbed the brunt of the fall, her reinforced frame cushioning Arthur as they slammed into a bed of loose soil and twisted metal. Pain shot through his prosthetics, but he was alive, thanks to her. She rolled off him with a groan, her red eyes scanning for threats even as she helped him to his feet. "You okay?" she asked, her voice steady despite the dust settling around them.

Arthur nodded, brushing off his coat and flexing his Cerberus charcoal-alloy arms. The omni-blade hummed faintly as he activated it briefly, checking for damage. "Thanks to you. That was some maneuver." He glanced at the others. Maxwell was already on her feet, analytical gaze assessing the cavernous space they'd fallen into. Laplace clutched her laser cannon, wincing as she stood, while Drake shook off the impact with a grunt.

The underground chamber was vast, illuminated by faint bioluminescent fungi clinging to the walls and scattered remnants of pre-war structures. Twisted metal beams and crumbled concrete formed an eerie labyrinth, shadows dancing in the dim light. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and rust, and a low hum vibrated through the ground, hinting at hidden machinery.

"Status report," Arthur commanded, his voice echoing slightly. "Everyone in one piece?"

Scarlet flexed her arm, frowning. "Bruised, but functional. That numbness from the tentacle graze is getting worse, though. It's spreading up my limb—like frostbite without the cold."

Maxwell nodded, prodding her shoulder. "Agreed. It's escalating. Pins and needles turning into full paralysis in isolated areas. If it's a toxin, it's engineered to debilitate without killing outright. Clever, for Raptures."

Laplace tried to lift her cannon, but her grip faltered, the weapon clattering to the ground. "Damn it. My fingers are going numb. I can barely feel them. This isn't just poison—it's targeting our neural interfaces. Feels like my systems are lagging."

Drake snarled, shaking her leg where the graze had landed. "Mine's hit my thigh. Walking's getting sluggish. Like wading through mud. If those bastards think this'll stop me, they've got another thing coming."

Arthur's concern deepened. The Nikkes' enhancements made them resilient, but this seemed tailored to exploit their cybernetic nature. He activated his Omni-Tool, the holographic interface flickering to life. "Shifty, do you copy? We've fallen into some kind of underground complex. Squad's dealing with what looks like a neurotoxin from those tentacles. Need intel on our position and any hostiles."

Static crackled in response, the connection sputtering. Shifty's voice broke through in fragments: "Commander... seismic... collapse... trying to... jammed..." The signal cut out abruptly, leaving only white noise.

"Comms are down," Arthur muttered, tapping the device. "Jammed, probably. Shifty mentioned something about it before the line died. We need to find the source and neutralize it."

Scarlet scanned the surroundings, her assault rifle at the ready. "Makes sense. If this place is hiding Heretic remnants, they'd want to block external signals. But how do we locate the jammers?"

Drake smirked, despite the growing stiffness in her movements. "Leave that to me. Missilis tech isn't all show. I'm equipped with a superior scanner suite—multispectral, can ping for electromagnetic interference." She activated a panel on her arm, a soft glow emanating as data scrolled across a small display. "Calibrating now. Give it a sec... there. Three signatures, strong EM pulses. Closest one's about 200 meters north, embedded in that wall cluster. The others are deeper in, forming a triangle pattern. Take 'em out, and we should clear the jam."

"Good work," Arthur said, impressed. "We'll split up to cover ground faster, but stay in visual range. Scarlet, with me on the nearest. Maxwell and Laplace, take the east one. Drake, scout the west but don't engage alone. Watch for more of those tentacles—and keep an eye on that numbness. If it worsens, pull back."

The group moved out, navigating the debris-strewn floor with caution. Arthur and Scarlet advanced side by side. The numbness in her arm made her movements slightly jerky, but she compensated with sheer determination. "This toxin... it's like it's rewriting code," she said quietly. "Feels wrong. Deeper than just physical."

Arthur placed a hand on her shoulder, his prosthetic fingers gentle. "We'll get through it. Like always." Their bond, forged in battles and intimate moments, gave him strength. He recalled their shared nights at the Outpost, her body entwined with his, a reminder of the humanity they fought to preserve.

In the Ark's Cerberus Medical Research Center, a sterile chamber hummed with anticipation. Jack Harper paced, his sharp suit impeccable, eyes fixed on the conversion pod. His daughter, Cora, had endured the E-zero decay long enough. The procedure was complete.

The pod hissed open, revealing Cora—now a Nikke. Her frame was sleek, enhanced with Cerberus tech: porcelain skin, short blonde hair, eyes glowing with biotic energy. She stepped out gracefully, testing her new limbs. Biotic fields shimmered around her hands, unique to Cerberus models—a power to manipulate mass and energy, bending physics in subtle ways.

"Father?" Her voice was steady, memories intact, a rarity in conversions. She remembered the pain, the decision, the love that drove it.

Jack enveloped her in a hug, tears in his eyes. "Cora... you're here. Whole."

She pulled back, flexing her fingers, a biotic spark dancing between them. "I feel... powerful. Alive. Thank you."
