_______________
"Kill!"
A bandit charged forward, brandishing a longsword. Xuan casually slashed his kunai across the man's throat. With a thud, he fell to the ground, never to rise again.
The Sharingan swept indifferently over the group of bandits. A simple Fear Genjutsu was cast naturally. The crimson eyes looked eerie and ghostly. Everyone who met his gaze felt an inexplicable terror rise in their hearts, as if the person before them was an Asura returned from hell. Their bodies trembled violently, feeling as though those red eyes were about to swallow them whole.
"Ahhh...!"
Finally, the first person couldn't withstand the welling terror and turned to flee, screaming. Like a fuse being lit, everyone scattered with a cry, hating that they hadn't been born with two extra legs.
Xuan stood motionless in his original spot. He didn't give chase, nor did he release any Ninjutsu. These fleeing bandits were just ordinary people. The few who remained were his true targets.
Not everyone had turned to run. Seven men remained, looking at Xuan guardedly. Although they wore bandit clothing, under the gaze of the Sharingan, their Chakra was clearly visible.
Seven Chūnin!
Xuan toyed with the kunai in his hand and sneered.
"I'll give you a chance. Name the mastermind, and you might live."
The seven Chūnin glanced at each other, assumed defensive stances, and slowly backed away. Xuan watched them with a smile, making no move to stop them. Even if they wanted to run, how could they possibly outrun his Flying Thunder God?
Clap! Clap! Clap!
A sudden round of applause rang out. On a nearby hill, a girl in white walked out slowly, clapping her hands.
The night was well underway, and the full moon cast a bright, pristine light upon the girl, adding a hazy, ethereal quality to her appearance. Her long, silky hair danced in the wind, framing a stunningly beautiful face that carried a hint of enchantment. Her eyes were nearly pure white, but rather than detracting from her beauty, they added a touch of gentleness.
"Hyuga Hinata?" Xuan cried out involuntarily. This girl looked far too much like a certain Hyuga heiress from decades in the future.
"Hyuga Hinata?" The girl repeated softly. She placed one hand on her hip and flipped her hair with flair, exuding an imposing aura.
"Getting a girl's name wrong the first time you meet... boys like that will find it hard to be popular with girls. Though, you probably won't have a future to worry about that. Nice to meet you, and goodbye. I am Hyuga Tamamo. Please advise."
Ding!
[Mission "Clear bandits and draw out the mastermind" complete. Reward: 1,000 Points. Phase 2 Mission Issued: Successfully escape the Hyuga clan's encirclement. Success Reward: 3,000 Points. Failure: Deduction of corresponding points.]
The System's flat voice echoed in his ear.
"Greetings, Princess!"
The moment the girl appeared, the seven Chūnin bowed to her in unison.
"Hyuga Tamamo? Princess?"
Xuan scrutinized her again. Only then did he realize that she was actually quite different from the Hyuga Hinata he knew.
The biggest difference was in temperament. Hyuga Hinata was the typical well-bred lady with a very soft personality; she would blush if you spoke more than a few words to her, giving people a refreshing, spring-breeze feeling.
The girl before him, however, felt sharp and revealing. She held her head high, looking down at him with eyes full of confidence. Her face shape was also slightly different from Hinata's—she was the type who sat somewhere between a cool beauty and a queen.
Realizing he had mistaken her for someone else, Xuan regained his composure.
"Hyuga Tamamo. They call you Princess, so I assume you are Hyuga Ten'nin's daughter. I wonder why Her Highness the Princess traveled all this way to our Uchiha mines and went through the trouble of using bandits to cut off the trade routes?"
Hyuga Tamamo smiled with great interest.
"To lure you out and kill you, of course."
Xuan raised an eyebrow. He wasn't surprised that she wanted to kill him. If a genius of his caliber appeared in a rival clan, he would probably do everything possible to kill them too.
However, he still had one doubt, so he asked,
"Lure me out to kill me? How were you so sure the clan would send me?"
Hyuga Tamamo replied,
"You have a lot of questions. But since you're about to die, I'll tell you. I have to say, your current Uchiha Clan Head is a fool. His thoughts are simply too easy to guess.
"The Fujiwara Mine is right on the edge of the Uchiha territory, effectively your hinterland. No one would expect someone to dare plot against the Uchiha here, because that would be seeking death.
"So, I had my subordinates drive nearby bandits here to blockade the surrounding trade routes, creating the illusion that this place was being targeted by common outlaws. Then, I had a few Chūnin mix in. This way, the exposed strength wouldn't be too high, but your stationed ninjas wouldn't be able to handle it, forcing them to ask the clan for help.
"It's a very simple deduction. For a mission like this—close to the clan, with opponents who aren't too strong—who is the most suitable person to send? The clan's geniuses, of course. It's practically a training mission delivered to your doorstep. Where else can you find such a good opportunity? Don't you agree?
"Actually, it didn't matter if it was you or not. If it wasn't you, it likely would have been Uchiha Madara. Killing him would be the same. If your clan had sent any other Jōnin, we simply wouldn't have shown ourselves, and all they would have seen were real bandits robbing ore. Are you satisfied with my answer, Genius of the Uchiha?"
Xuan smiled bitterly, slandering internally,
Is the fact that the Clan Head is a fool known to the entire ninja world now?
In reality, Uchiha Tajima's intellect wasn't as bad as the two of them made it out to be. He certainly wasn't a fool, or he wouldn't have led the Uchiha clan for so long. At most, he was just straight-minded and lacked sufficient awareness of conspiracy.
"I'm satisfied. I didn't expect the Hyuga clan to produce a Princess like you. I suddenly feel that this Warring States period is getting interesting. But are you confident you can kill me? Just with those seven Chūnin at your feet? Be careful you don't 'try to steal a chicken only to lose the rice' and end up dead yourself," Xuan said calmly.
Measuring the strength of both sides, he quietly took a scroll out of his bag. He knew there was no way she only brought these few Chūnin.
"'Steal a chicken only to lose the rice'? Hehe, you have an interesting way of speaking. Don't worry, of course, it's not just them!"
Following Hyuga Tamamo's words, three figures suddenly appeared on the three surrounding walls of the bandit stockade. They appeared out of thin air; even Xuan's Sharingan hadn't caught their movements.
"Elite Jōnin! Holy sh*t..."
Seeing the three figures appear, Xuan's pupils contracted violently. This lineup... was a bit too fierce!
