Chapter 32 - Ch 32: Under the Hawaiian Lights

By the time the ceremony ended, the sun had begun to dip lower in the sky.

Guests slowly made their way down the beach toward the reception area set up closer to the water.

Round tables covered in white linen were arranged beneath strings of warm lights that stretched between tall palm trees.

The ocean rolled quietly behind us while soft music drifted through the air.

"This is beautiful," Daisy murmured beside me.

"It's perfect," Isabelle agreed.

Ahead of us, Amy and Nicholas were already surrounded by guests offering congratulations.

Nicholas looked overwhelmed while Amy looked radiant.

"She looks so happy," I said softly.

Daisy nodded.

"Of course she does. She married the love of her life."

"Don't get emotional now," Isabelle added.

"I'm not emotional," Daisy said quickly.

She paused.

"Okay maybe a little."

Laughter drifted through the air as everyone settled at their tables.

Servers moved between the guests carrying trays of drinks while the soft glow of lanterns illuminated the beach.

At the center of the reception space, a small dance floor had been set up facing the ocean.

Dylan suddenly clinked his fork against his glass.

"Alright everyone, can I have your attention!"

Nicholas groaned immediately.

"Oh no."

Amy laughed.

Dylan raised his drink proudly.

"For those of you who don't know me, I'm Dylan. One of Nicholas' closest friends and unfortunately one of the few people who knows all of his embarrassing stories."

The crowd chuckled.

Nicholas covered his face. "Please don't."

Dylan grinned.

"I've known Nicholas for a long time. Long enough to know he's stubborn, dramatic, and extremely annoying."

More laughter erupted.

Nicholas pointed at him. "You're fired as my groomsman."

Dylan continued as if he hadn't spoken.

"But despite all that… Amy is the best thing that has ever happened to him."

Amy smiled warmly.

Nicholas softened.

"So Amy," Dylan added, raising his glass, "thank you for putting up with him for the rest of your life so the rest of us don't have to."

Everyone laughed.

"To Amy and Nicholas!"

"To Amy and Nicholas!" the crowd echoed.

Glasses clinked together across the tables. Amy leaned into Nicholas and kissed his cheek.

"I regret letting Dylan speak," she whispered.

Nicholas nodded.

"Same."

Music began playing again as dinner was served.

The evening moved quickly after that.

Laughter filled the air as people chatted, drank, and enjoyed the warm Hawaiian night.

Across the table, Daisy leaned closer to me.

"You know Harley has been staring at you all night, right?"

I nearly choked on my drink.

"That is not true."

"Oh it absolutely is," she said smugly.

I refused to look in his direction.

Daisy smirked.

"You're blushing."

"I am not."

"Very convincing."

Before I could respond, the music shifted into a slow melody.

Nicholas stood and held out his hand toward Amy.

"Mrs. Lu?"

Amy laughed.

"I could get used to hearing that."

She placed her hand in his.

The crowd applauded as they stepped onto the dance floor together.

The two of them swayed slowly beneath the string lights while the ocean waves rolled softly behind them.

"They're adorable," Isabelle said.

"They really are," I agreed.

The song ended to loud applause.

More couples began stepping onto the dance floor.

I was about to return to my drink when a hand appeared in front of me.

I looked up.

Harley.

"Dance with me."

My heart skipped.

"I don't dance."

"That's funny," he said calmly. "Because I distinctly remember you dancing at prom."

I hesitated.

Behind me, Daisy whispered loudly.

"GO."

I shot her a glare.

Harley raised an eyebrow.

"Well?"

I sighed and placed my hand in his.

"Fine."

He pulled me gently toward the dance floor.

The music slowed again as he placed one hand lightly on my waist while holding my other hand.

"You're nervous," he said quietly.

"I'm not nervous."

"You are."

I rolled my eyes.

"You're imagining things."

He chuckled softly.

We moved slowly with the music, the soft glow of the lights reflecting in the ocean behind us.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then—

"AUNTIE SOPHIE!"

I looked down.

Avalee and Alexander stood beside us, their eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Can we dance too?" Avalee asked eagerly.

Harley laughed.

"Of course."

He lifted Avalee easily while Alexander grabbed my hands and began spinning in a circle.

The children's laughter echoed across the dance floor.

Amy watched us from across the room and burst out laughing.

Nicholas shook his head.

"I think they're having more fun than we are."

Eventually the music faded and the twins ran off toward the dessert table.

I stepped back from Harley, smoothing my dress.

"That was unfair."

"What was?"

"You know I can't say no when children are involved."

Harley smiled faintly.

"That's exactly why I allowed it."

I narrowed my eyes.

"You're manipulative."

"I prefer strategic."

The reception slowly began to quiet down as the night grew later.

Some guests were still dancing beneath the glowing string lights while others gathered near the shoreline, watching the waves roll across the sand.

Music drifted softly through the air.

I slipped away from the crowd for a moment, walking toward the water.

The sand was cool beneath my feet as the ocean breeze brushed against my skin.

Behind me, laughter and conversation faded into the distance.

The moon hung high above the ocean, casting a silver glow across the water.

Footsteps approached behind me.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Harley stopped beside me.

"You disappeared," he said.

"I needed some air."

He looked back toward the reception.

"You're missing the party."

I shrugged slightly.

"I think Amy has enough people celebrating for her."

Harley chuckled softly.

"That's true."

For a moment, neither of us spoke. The waves rolled gently onto the shore before retreating again.

"You did good today," he said suddenly.

I glanced at him.

"What do you mean?"

"You helped Amy a lot with the wedding," he replied. "She was nervous this morning."

I smiled faintly.

"She deserves a perfect day."

Harley studied me quietly.

"You always take care of the people around you."

I shrugged.

"That's what friends do."

Another breeze drifted between us, carrying the scent of saltwater.

Harley leaned slightly against the railing of a nearby wooden post.

"You looked beautiful today," he said casually.

My heart skipped. I quickly looked away toward the ocean.

"You clean up well yourself," I replied.

He chuckled softly.

"That wasn't a compliment."

"It wasn't?"

"No."

I nudged his arm lightly.

"You're impossible."

"Yet you still tolerate me."

I smiled faintly.

"I guess I've gotten used to you."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he spoke again.

"Do you remember when we used to sneak out to the beach back in high school?"

I laughed softly.

"How could I forget? Your parents grounded you for two weeks."

"Worth it."

The waves continued their quiet rhythm beside us.

For a moment, everything felt calm.

Peaceful.

Then Harley pushed away from the post.

"Walk with me."

"Where?"

He nodded toward the shoreline.

"Just along the beach."

I hesitated for a second before nodding.

"Alright."

We began walking along the shoreline together, close enough that our hands almost brushed.

The moonlight stretched across the ocean while the waves rolled gently beside our feet.

Behind us, the music from the reception faded into the distance.

And for the first time that night, the world felt quiet again.
