Chapter 7 - chapter 7: The Observation

Monday morning was ordinary. Too ordinary. That's when I knew something was coming.

Daniel left for work, smiling and kissing my cheek. I returned the gesture automatically, but my mind was elsewhere. I wasn't trusting him. Not anymore.

Vanessa wasn't coming today, but that didn't matter. The game was already in motion. Step two of my plan: watch them carefully without being seen.

I went through Daniel's emails. Most were routine. But one flagged my attention—sent from an address I didn't recognize. Nora.

My chest tightened. My sister was deeper in this than I thought.

I read quickly. The message was short, but its meaning was clear:

"Keep her distracted. Everything is on track."

My fingers tightened around the cup.

They weren't sloppy anymore—they were dangerous.

I placed the phone down and glanced at the living room mirror. My shadow stretched long and sharp along the wall.

"They underestimate you," it whispered.

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

For the next hour, I did what I had learned to do best: observe. Notes in hand, I tracked Daniel's movements, his gestures, and even his pauses. Every small action told a story. Every glance at his phone was a lie in motion.

Then I noticed something subtle—an unopened envelope on his desk. Slightly angled, as if placed hurriedly. My instincts told me this was a clue.

I didn't touch it. Not yet. Instead, I noted it down. Observation first. Action later.

By evening, I had mapped their likely plans for the next few days. Vanessa's habits, Daniel's predictable routines, and Nora's involvement.

The shadows in the apartment seemed darker, denser, almost alive. I didn't look at them for comfort anymore—they were confirmation. Allies. Guides.

Step two was complete. I knew their next moves, and they wouldn't suspect mine.

And for the first time, I smiled quietly to myself.

This wasn't just survival. This was preparation.

And when the time came, they would see exactly what I was capable of.
