Chapter 138 - chapter 139: The Offer Explained

They didn't threaten me.

They explained.

Which was more dangerous.

"We don't destroy markets," the woman said.

"We prevent instability."

"How?" I asked.

"By deciding who rises and who falls."

That was control.

Clear and simple.

"And what do you want from me?"

The answer came directly.

"A future seat."

That surprised me.

"I'm still being evaluated."

"Yes," the man replied.

"But we invest early."

Invest.

Not recruit.

Interesting wording.

"And what do I gain?"

His answer came calmly.

"Protection from chaos."

Pause.

"Predictable growth."

Pause.

"Influence beyond your current reach."

Then he said the real hook:

"You would never lose what your father lost."

That sentence hit deeper than they knew.

Because loss built me.

But avoiding loss?

That was tempting.

I asked the only question that mattered.

"What is the price?"

Silence.

Then the woman answered:

"Priority alignment."

"That sounds vague."

"It means when stability requires difficult decisions…"

Pause.

"…you don't hesitate."

I understood.

"Even if people get hurt?"

No one answered immediately.

Which was answer enough.

Finally the man said:

"History remembers builders. Not casualties."

Cold logic.

Effective.

Dangerous.

I stood slowly.

"I need time."

He nodded.

"Take it."

Then he added one sentence that stayed with me.

"Your father also asked for time."

"And?"

"He never came back."

That wasn't information.

That was pressure.
