Chapter 140 - chapter 141: A Warning Without Loyalty

I didn't reply to Kael immediately.

People born into power rarely act without reason.

If he warned me, there was a motive.

Three hours later another message came.

You remind me of someone.

I finally replied.

My father?

His response came slower this time.

Yes. That's why I'm careful.

Careful.

Not friendly.

Not supportive.

Careful.

Why warn me? I asked.

His answer was simple.

Because you still believe power should have limits.

That word again.

Limits.

It seemed to be the line dividing my father's world from The Circle's.

And you don't? I asked.

There was a long pause before his reply.

I believe limits are expensive.

That was the most honest answer yet.

Before I could respond again he sent one final message:

Just don't decide too fast. They respect patience.

I understood the hidden meaning.

Fast agreement shows weakness.

And weakness was something I could no longer afford.

The next test wasn't subtle.

A major partner suddenly withdrew cooperation.

No explanation.

Just distance.

Victor confirmed my suspicion.

"They're applying soft pressure."

"To force a decision?"

"Yes."

I didn't react publicly.

Instead I stabilized internally.

Diversified suppliers.

Reduced dependency.

Quiet defensive moves.

Victor watched carefully.

"You're responding correctly."

"I'm responding slowly."

He nodded.

"That frustrates them more."

Because power expects reaction.

Control comes from refusing to be predictable.

That night Kael sent another message.

Good move today.

I frowned.

You're watching my business decisions?

His reply:

I watch patterns. Not people.

That answer didn't feel fully true.

But I also sensed something else.

He wasn't testing me like the others.

He was studying me.

And I still didn't know why.
