Chapter 12 - chapter 12 passenger

The elevator descended in silence.

A soft mechanical hum filled the small space as the numbers above the door flickered downward.

7…

6…

5…

Kenji stood perfectly still.

His breathing was steady.

But his eyes were fixed on the floor.

Two shadows stared back at him.

One belonged to him.

The other did not.

The second shadow stretched beside his own like spilled ink, darker and thicker than the dim elevator lights should allow.

Kenji didn't move.

He simply watched it.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the second shadow shifted.

Not like a shadow reacting to light.

Like something adjusting its weight.

Kenji's voice was calm.

"You followed me."

The elevator hummed.

4…

The shadow rose slightly along the wall beside him, stretching upward like a tall figure standing.

It had no shape.

No edges.

Just darkness that refused to behave like darkness.

Kenji tilted his head slightly.

"Were you in the room?"

No answer.

But the temperature in the elevator dropped sharply.

Cold air rolled across the metal floor.

Kenji's breath fogged faintly.

The shadow slid closer.

Not touching him.

Just near.

Watching.

Kenji didn't step away.

Instead, he asked another question.

"Were you one of the ones who told me to stay dead?"

The elevator lights flickered.

3…

The second shadow stopped moving.

For a moment it looked almost… curious.

Then the elevator shook violently.

The lights died.

Darkness swallowed the elevator.

Total.

Absolute.

The humming stopped.

The descent halted.

Kenji didn't panic.

He stood in the blackness, listening.

Something moved behind him.

A slow, dragging sound.

Like something stepping across metal.

Kenji turned.

"Show yourself."

The darkness thickened.

And then—

A voice answered.

Not loud.

Not threatening.

Just… ancient.

"You weren't supposed to return."

Kenji's pulse remained steady.

"You already told me that."

Silence followed.

Then the voice spoke again.

"But you came back anyway."

Kenji felt something brush against his shoulder.

Cold.

Not like a hand.

Like air passing through him.

"I didn't choose to," Kenji said.

The voice paused.

"Perhaps."

The elevator lights flickered weakly back to life.

Dim.

Fading.

Kenji looked down.

The second shadow was gone.

Only his own remained beneath his feet.

The elevator jerked suddenly.

Then resumed descending.

2…

1…

DING.

The doors opened.

The hospital lobby stretched out before him.

Empty chairs.

Dark windows.

Rain tapping softly against the glass entrance.

Kenji stepped forward slowly.

The elevator doors began to close behind him.

Just before they shut completely—

Kenji glanced back.

Inside the elevator—

the mirrored wall reflected something standing there.

A tall silhouette.

Watching him leave.

And this time

it smiled.
