Chapter 24 - chapter 24 the one that more without him

Separation.

The word didn't fade.

It stayed.

Not loud.

Not forced.

Just—

there.

Kenji didn't move.

Not because he was frozen—

because moving now felt wrong.

Ahead of him, his shadow continued.

One step.

Then another.

Unhurried.

Certain.

The distance between them stretched.

Thin—

but real.

Kenji exhaled slowly.

"…you don't need me anymore."

No answer.

But the air tightened—

as if something disagreed

without speaking.

Kenji stepped forward.

This time, his body moved first.

The shadow adjusted instantly—

not to him—

but to where he would be.

That was worse.

Kenji stopped.

"…you're not following."

A pause.

"…you're positioning."

The pressure shifted.

Not around him.

Through him.

His fingers curled slightly.

"…what happens if I stand still?"

Silence.

Then—

the shadow stopped.

Ahead.

Perfectly still.

Not returning.

Not correcting.

Waiting.

Kenji didn't like that.

Waiting meant expectation.

He stepped sideways—

breaking alignment.

The shadow hesitated—

a fraction—

then moved.

Not back to him.

Forward.

Repositioning.

Staying ahead.

Kenji's eyes sharpened.

"…you don't want to be behind me."

The air grew colder.

Not temperature—

presence.

Kenji stepped back.

Slow.

Controlled.

The shadow held forward—

for a moment—

then snapped back.

Perfect alignment.

Behind him.

Clean.

As if nothing had shifted.

Kenji let out a quiet breath.

"…you correct when I force it."

The voice returned.

Closer now.

It maintains balance.

Kenji's gaze lifted slightly.

"…that's not balance."

A beat.

"…that's control."

Silence.

Kenji moved again—

stopping midway.

Holding the motion incomplete.

The shadow didn't hesitate.

It finished the step.

Standing where he hadn't reached.

Kenji didn't follow.

The gap remained.

Small—

but undeniable.

"…ahead again," he murmured.

The pressure deepened.

Not aggressive.

Certain.

Kenji's breathing slowed.

"…what happens if I don't close it?"

The silence shifted.

Then—

It continues.

Kenji's eyes narrowed.

"…without me."

A pause.

Then:

It always did.

That landed.

Kenji didn't react outwardly—

but something inside him tightened.

"…yeah," he said quietly.

"…that's the part you should've led with."

The shadow moved again.

Further now.

Not testing.

Not waiting.

Leaving.

Kenji watched it go.

Didn't chase.

Didn't call it back.

Because he understood something else.

This wasn't happening to him.

This was happening instead of him.

The street felt wrong again.

Longer.

Quieter.

Emptier.

As if something had already passed through—

and left him behind.

Kenji exhaled slowly.

"…so that's the direction."

No response.

He stepped forward—

fully this time.

No hesitation.

No pause.

The moment his foot landed—

the shadow snapped back.

Behind him.

Perfect.

Aligned.

As if it had never left.

Kenji stopped.

"…you don't like when I catch up."

Silence.

But the pressure tightened again.

Closer.

Focused.

Kenji lowered his gaze.

His shadow—

still.

Normal.

Exactly where it should be.

And still—

wrong.

Because now he understood.

It wasn't behind him

because it had to be.

It was behind him

because it chose to be.

Kenji's voice dropped.

"…you're not separate."

A pause.

"…not yet."

The answer came back

quiet.

Measured.

Not yet.
