Chapter 45 - CHAPTER 45 — While You Slee

Kenji didn't mean to fall asleep.

That was the first mistake.

It wasn't slow.

No drifting.

No warning.

One second he was sitting against the wall—

The next—

Nothing.

The warehouse stayed the same.

Concrete.

Rust.

Dim light flickering overhead.

Except now—

Kenji wasn't moving.

Head tilted slightly to the side.

Breathing shallow.

Still.

Behind him—

The shadow didn't match anymore.

It peeled.

Not all at once.

Slow.

Like something unsticking itself from the surface it had been pressed into.

It lifted just enough to break contact with the wall.

Then more.

Then—

It stood.

Not fully formed.

Not human.

But upright.

Watching him.

Silence held for a moment.

Then—

It moved.

A slight tilt.

A shift in angle.

Like it was adjusting to something unseen.

"…late."

The voice didn't come from the air.

It didn't echo.

It didn't travel.

It simply… existed.

Low.

Flat.

Wrong.

Nothing answered.

But something listened.

That was clear.

The shadow's edges flickered.

Not unstable.

More like… translating.

"…he's awake too often."

A pause.

"…interference increasing."

Still nothing visible.

Still nothing audible.

But the space around it tightened—

Like something far away had turned its attention toward this exact point.

The shadow shifted again.

Subtle.

Controlled.

"…no."

A longer pause.

"…not yet."

Its form thinned slightly.

Stretching.

Listening.

"…he's starting to notice."

That part lingered.

Then—

A distortion.

Not in the shadow.

In the air around it.

Like a signal passing through something too small to contain it.

"…we don't have time."

Silence.

Heavier this time.

The shadow lowered its head slightly—

Not submission.

Not hesitation.

Something closer to… calculation.

"…send another."

The words didn't sound like a request.

A beat.

Then—

Everything stopped.

The distortion collapsed.

The tension vanished.

The shadow dropped back.

Flat.

Still.

Perfectly aligned again.

Like it had never moved at all.

Kenji breathed in sharply.

🔥

He was standing somewhere else.

No transition.

No memory of getting there.

Just—

There.

A street.

Empty.

Too empty.

Buildings lined both sides, tall enough to block out most of the sky.

Lights flickered overhead, but none of them stayed on long enough to matter.

Kenji didn't move at first.

He just looked.

"…I know this place."

His voice sounded quieter here.

Distant.

That was the problem.

He didn't know this place.

Not really.

But his body did.

His feet shifted slightly.

Not forward.

Just enough to adjust.

Like they were preparing for something.

"…yeah."

A breath.

"…that's not good."

He turned his head slowly.

The street stretched farther than it should have.

Not longer—

Just… unwilling to end.

Something moved at the far side.

Too far to make out.

Too slow to track.

Kenji narrowed his eyes.

"…who's there?"

No answer.

But the air changed.

Not colder.

Not heavier.

Just—

Aware.

A faint sound reached him.

Not footsteps.

Not wind.

Breathing.

Kenji's shoulders tightened.

"…I'm dreaming."

He said it out loud.

Like that would make it easier to control.

It didn't.

The buildings shifted.

Not physically.

But their angles felt wrong.

Like perspective itself had been nudged slightly out of place.

"…yeah."

He exhaled slowly.

"…definitely dreaming."

A figure appeared at the end of the street.

This time—

Clear.

Still.

Watching.

Kenji didn't move.

Didn't step forward.

Didn't step back.

"…you've been here before."

The voice didn't belong to the figure.

It came from behind him.

Kenji's eyes didn't change.

Didn't widen.

Didn't panic.

"…no."

A beat.

"…I haven't."

The voice shifted slightly.

Closer now.

"…not like this."

Kenji's jaw tightened.

"…then how?"

Silence.

Then—

A second figure appeared.

Closer.

Then a third.

Same shape.

Same stillness.

Same distance apart.

Watching.

"…you remember."

Kenji's breath caught.

Just once.

"…I don't remember anything."

That wasn't entirely true.

The first figure tilted its head.

"…exactly."

The lights above flickered harder.

Faster.

The street bent.

Not visibly—

But enough that standing still no longer felt stable.

Kenji finally took a step.

Forward.

"…then show me."

The figures didn't move.

But something behind them did.

Something larger.

Something that didn't fit inside the street.

And for the first time—

Kenji hesitated.

Not because he was afraid.

But because—

Some part of him already knew what he was about to see.

And didn't want to.

Far away—

In a place that wasn't a dream—

The shadow remained perfectly still.

But something inside it

Was listening.

And something else had just answered
