Chapter 54 - 54 Pep Talk

As Harry and Thor headed down the corridor toward the lab, they spotted Steve in the training area, fully immersed in a speed drill, punching a bag to take out the frustration of waiting. Rhodey, meanwhile, was holding what looked like maps and was trying to give Steve a rundown of something technical but clearly unrelated to combat.

Harry knocked on the door, "team meeting in the lab". Harry stated and gestured the two of them to follow, which they did without much hesitation.

When they entered the lab, the scene before them immediately caught their attention. Tony was standing behind Bruce and zapped Bruce on the side with a playful jolt.

"Ow!" Banner exclaimed, flinching at the sudden shock.

Steve's reaction was immediate. "Hey!" he marched forward, his voice tight with concern. "Are you out of your mind?"

Tony, ever the provocateur, shrugged, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Jury's still out," he quipped, casting a glance back at Bruce. "But come on, you've really got a handle on it, haven't you, big guy? So tell me, what's your secret? Mellow jazz? Bongo drums? Or is it a massive bag of weed?"

Steve looked appalled, but Harry couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped him as Rhodey shot Tony an unimpressed look.

Oddly, Harry felt a faint pulse of magical energy ripple through the room. Had it not been for his training in Asgard, he might not have even detected it. It felt like a faint hum of an enragement rune designed to slowly stoke the flames of anger. His brow furrowed in concentration as he quietly probed the room, attempting to trace the source of the unsettling magic.

"Is everything a joke to you?" Steve's voice cut through Harry's focus, the tension in his tone unmistakable.

"Funny things are," Tony replied with a shrug, undeterred by Steve's disapproval.

Harry's instincts told him that something was off, but the magic was so well-disguised that he struggled to pinpoint its origin. His eyes flicked over the lab equipment, past the scattered papers and data screens and everything that was in the room.

"Threatening the safety of everyone on this ship isn't funny," Steve retorted, his brow furrowed. "No offence, Doc."

"It's alright," Banner interjected calmly, though there was a hint of unease. "I wouldn't have come aboard if I couldn't handle pointy things."

Tony, of course, couldn't resist. "Pointy things? You're tip-toeing, big man. You need to strut."

Harry's eyes landed on the glowing sceptre resting in a containment unit. It was the only thing here that didn't belong here. While the others were absorbed in their debate, Harry edged closer to the sceptre, keeping a wary eye on it. If Harry had to guess, then the magical energy should be emanating from there, pulsating through the room like an invisible mist, slowly influencing the mood of everyone present.

"And you need to focus on the problem," Steve snapped, his frustration building.

"You think I am not" Tony shot back, "Why did Fury call us in? Why now, and why not before? What isn't he telling us? I can't do the equation unless I have all the variables."

Harry glanced over his shoulder at the pair as their conversation continued. The subtle shifts in their tone mirrored the growing agitation Harry felt in the air. The magic was working, heightening emotions in an almost imperceptible way.

Harry, now standing closer to the sceptre, closed his eyes briefly, trying to narrow his magical focus on the artefact. Harry had to be sure that the sceptre was the cause. The unsettling energy swirling around it seemed almost alive, pushing against his senses, as if daring him to probe deeper.

"Do you think Fury's hiding something?" Steve's voice came again, harsher now.

Tony, barely fazed, responded with his usual casual bravado. "He's a spy, Captain. His secrets have secrets."

Harry took a deep breath and hovered his hand near the glass containment. The staff itself was ordinary, it was the jewel that was abundant with energy.

While Harry was distracted by the Scepter, the banter between Tony, Steve, and Bruce carried on. Tony gestured towards Bruce "It's bugging him too, isn't it?" Tony said with his usual flair.

"Uh… a warm light for all mankind," Bruce muttered, referencing Loki's taunt about the Cube.

"I heard it." Steve nodded.

Bruce, continued, "Well, I think that was meant for you." He gestured toward Tony, who smirked and offered him a blueberry.

Harry's focus however remained locked on the jewel. The magical energy it radiated was ancient, powerful, and eerily similar to the Tesseract. It held the same archaic quality, but there was a subtle distinction Harry couldn't quite place. As he moved his hand slightly over the containment, his magic brushed against the jewel's energy, sending a chill down his spine. He recoiled slightly, narrowing his eyes as he tried to understand. The aura surrounding it pulsed in rhythm, almost as though it were alive, feeding off the tension in the room. But how did it work? Was it acting on its own, or was it under Loki's direct influence?

"Even if Barton didn't tell Loki about the tower, it was still all over the news," Bruce noted, shifting the topic to the Stark Tower.

"The Stark Tower? That big ugly…" Steve was about to comment but Tony interjected with a glare "Building in New York?"

"It's powered by an arc reactor," Bruce continued, oblivious to the magic at work. "Self-sustaining energy source. That building will run itself for, what, a year?"

"It's just the prototype," Tony shrugged, tossing another blueberry in his mouth. "Currently, I'm kind of the only name in clean energy right now, that's what he's getting at."

Harry, began to draw comparisons in his mind. The Tesseract was a cosmic power source, capable of immense destruction, but this jewel felt more… insidious. It was as if it was designed not to wield power but to control it, to manipulate the emotions and minds of those around it. He felt the growing frustration in the room, the simmering tension that was slowly building between his teammates, and realized the jewel was amplifying it.

"So, why didn't SHIELD bring him in on the Tesseract project? What are they even doing in the energy business in the first place?" Banner wondered aloud.

"I should probably look into that as soon as my decryption program finishes breaking into all of SHIELD's secure files," Tony remarked with a nonchalant tap on the keyboard.

The energy from the scepter was too sophisticated to be random; it was deliberate and purposeful. But how does it work? Harry asked himself. Is it Loki's doing, or his benefactors? He had to figure it out before the magic spiraled out of control, before it set them all at each other's throats.

"I'm sorry, did you say—?" Steve began, astonished.

"JARVIS has been running it since I hit the bridge," Tony continued, waving a hand dismissively. "In a few hours, I'll know every dirty secret SHIELD has ever tried to hide. Blueberry?"

"Yet you're confused about why they didn't want you around," Steve pointed out, crossing his arms.

"An intelligence organization that fears intelligence? Historically, not awesome," Tony quipped, before turning serious.

"We all know that Loki's trying to wind us up. This is a man who means to start a war, and if we don't stay focused, he'll succeed. Trying to find divisions in what we have now is only going to forward his cause. We have orders; we should follow them." Steve defended.

"Following's not really my style," Tony shot back.

"And you're all about style, aren't you?" Steve shouted back, trying to rein in Tony's antics.

"Out of the people in this room, which one is 'A' wearing a spangly outfit and 'B' not of use?" Tony countered.

"Tell me none of this smells a little funky to you?" Bruce asked, shifting his gaze to Steve.

"If there is someone who knows the truth, it has to be Harry," Rhodey's voice cut through the rising tension. His words drew everyone's attention to Harry, who seemed distant, and focused on something other than the heated discussion happening around him.

"Harry," Thor's deep voice rumbled, a bit louder than necessary, trying to break through the wizard's concentration.

Harry blinked, startled, pulling himself out of his thoughts as he realized every pair of eyes in the room was now on him. "What?" he asked, confused and still partially distracted by the strange magic emanating from the sceptre. The intensity of the stares made him uneasy.

"What is SHIELD using the Tesseract for?" Steve's voice was firm, his arms crossed as he demanded answers.

Before Harry could even begin to answer, Tony added with a raised eyebrow, "And don't give us that 'warm light for humankind' bullshit. You have hidden your break-up with us already. I can still give you a pass on that because we got bigger stuffs on our plate. But hiding stuffs for SHIELD will not be cool."

Thor stepped forward with a serious expression. "If SHIELD is meddling with forces they do not understand," he began, glancing briefly at Harry before addressing the group, "it could be catastrophic. The Tesseract is not something of Midgard. It is far more dangerous than they realize."

Rhodey gave a nod, backing Thor up. "SHIELD isn't just keeping secrets; they're playing with fire. And if anyone in this room can sense when things are about to explode, it's Harry."

The room was tense, the weight of the silence bearing down on everyone as they waited for Harry to speak. Harry let out a steady breath, feeling the pressure, but without hesitation, he raised his hand and, with a subtle flick, cast a shimmering barrier around the room. It was a clear, unspoken signal to the others: no one was going to eavesdrop on this conversation, not even SHIELD.

The room shifted as they watched him, surprised but silent, as Harry walked to the display console. Without a word, he logged into the SHIELD system using his personal credentials. Within seconds, he had pulled up a series of files regarding Phase 2.

Harry turned back to face them, his expression unreadable but his posture commanding. He didn't hesitate; there was no wavering in his voice. "You want to know the truth?" he began, locking eyes with Steve, Tony, and the others, each in turn. "I'll give you the truth. SHIELD's been developing weapons, using the Tesseract's energy as a power source."

A ripple of reactions passed through the team. Tony raised an eyebrow but didn't interrupt. Steve crossed his arms tighter, his jaw clenched as if the confirmation only deepened his suspicions.

"Why?" Steve asked barely controlling his anger.

"SHIELD was created as the first line of defence against global threats," Harry began. "It was meant to ensure that no one like Hitler, no organisation like Hydra, could ever rise again. But as our technology advanced and our desire to expand beyond our planet, so did the threats we faced."

The team remained silent, listening intently as Harry continued, pacing slightly as he spoke. "It wasn't just about protecting us from terrestrial dangers anymore. As our reach became more intergalactic, so did the enemies we encountered. Thor," Harry nodded toward the Asgardian, "isn't the only alien who's visited Earth. In the 1970s, SHIELD dealt with a few Kree soldiers who came here too."

Thor's brow furrowed. "The Kree? What were they doing here?"

Harry paused, glancing briefly at Thor before continuing, "It was tied to their war with the Skrulls, but that's a story for another time. Ever since then, SHIELD's been working behind the scenes to develop ways to protect Earth from intergalactic threats. But things took a more serious turn when you, Thor, arrived on Earth."

Thor shifted uncomfortably, crossing his arms. "Asgard has never waged war on Earth."

"And I know that," Harry replied. "But you have to understand how it looked from SHIELD's perspective. Suddenly, a being with godlike powers descends from the sky. Then the destroyer comes to Earth and causes chaos." He glanced around the room, making sure the rest of the team was following. "It shook people, made them realize just how vulnerable we are. That vulnerability made SHIELD double down. They amplified their efforts to create weapons, using whatever resources they could find, including the Tesseract."

Steve, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. "But that's just it, SHIELD was supposed to protect people, not create weapons of mass destruction."

Harry nodded. "And I agree with you, Steve. But SHIELD wasn't just thinking about wars here on Earth. He's thinking about wars that could come from beyond, like the one we're facing now." His gaze shifted to Tony. "Look at what we're up against, an alien invasion. A god. And Loki's not acting alone; he's working with an intergalactic army that we're already on the brink of fighting."

Thor's face darkened at the mention of Loki's army, but he didn't interrupt.

Harry continued, "As humans, it's in our nature to protect ourselves, to prepare for the worst. That's why SHIELD's been working on Phase 2, using the Tesseract's energy to build weapons capable of defending Earth from threats like this. Fury never wanted it to come to this, and neither did I, but right now, we're standing on the eve of a war. What if all of us weren't here? How would our race stand to fight against an intergalactic armada?"

There was a long pause as the team absorbed Harry's words. The truth was sinking in, and despite their unease with SHIELD's secrecy, it was hard to argue with Harry's logic.

"Fury may not have told us everything, but I don't think he's the enemy here," Harry added. "The real threat is out there, and we need to stop it."

"So, SHIELD was using the Tesseract to make weapons like Hydra did," Steve said, his voice heavy with disappointment.

Harry met his gaze, understanding the weight of the comparison. "Yes, Steve," he confirmed quietly. The atmosphere became sombre as each member of the team grappled with the reality of SHIELD's actions.

Bruce, leaning against a console, finally broke the silence. "What do you plan to do with the cube once we find it, Harry?"

Harry paused, his eyes scanning the faces of his teammates. He wished he had a clear answer, a definitive solution to offer them. But the truth was, the path ahead was uncertain.

"I don't know," Harry admitted quietly, his gaze moving across each member of the team, his voice weighted with an honesty that hung thick in the air. "I don't know exactly what the right choice is right now. I just know that if we don't act, if we hesitate, it's the wrong hands that are going to take this. And I can't let that happen, not while we still have a say in it."

The room fell silent as his words sank in. Faces that had once looked sceptical now softened with a hint of understanding.

Harry stepped forward. "Look, yes, SHIELD is building an arsenal with the Tesseract. Frankly, if any of you saw what I've seen, you'd understand why Fury is doing what he's doing. It's not perfect, but that is what our race has always been.

He paused, "But Fury and I, we didn't put all our chips on weapons and fortifications. We bet on something far riskier." Nodding toward Tony, Harry continued. "Tony knows this. It's called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was simple: bring together a group of remarkable people, and see if they could become something more, something powerful enough to protect this world when we needed them. People who might have their flaws and their differences—but who all believe in something bigger than themselves."

Harry let his gaze fall on each of them, holding their attention with a fierce intensity. "I left the army because of the differences I had with my superiors. However, on this team, we'd be better. We'd be different. We'd be outside of the petty power struggles, above government squabbles, and focused on one thing only: protecting this world. I mean, look around." He gestured to each of them in turn. "We're all misfits in our own right—a playboy billionaire genius, a super soldier from another era, a god from a distant realm, a wizard from a hidden world, a man with anger issues the size of a planet, and an air force officer who just won't quit. What binds us? Not our backgrounds, that's for sure. But our belief. Each of us would lay down our lives to protect this planet from threats, be they from the other side of the world or the other side of the galaxy."

As he finished, he could see the steely resolve in their eyes, the doubt and hesitation now replaced with purpose. Each of them seemed to stand a little taller, as if his words had stitched together a fabric of trust that hadn't existed before.

But then, Bruce, who had been looking down at the floor, glanced up, his face tinged with worry. "There's… just one problem, Harry. I've felt something, and… I'm not sure I can control it anymore. The beast… it's right there, just under the surface." His voice wavered as his fingers curled into his palms. "It's like he's just waiting, and I'm… I'm not sure how much longer I can hold him back."

Harry placed a hand on Bruce's shoulder, a reassuring weight to ground him. "Bruce, I trust you, and we trust you. You've got something no one else here has—control. And if that control slips, you're surrounded by a team who will make sure you're safe, and we'll make sure the people around us are safe too. We'll do this together. All of it."

"No, that's not what I meant," Bruce clarified, his voice tinged with growing urgency. "I think Loki is using his magic to manipulate my emotions—to push me into losing control, to let the Hulk loose."

At that moment, Harry realised that while he shifted his focus to bring this group together, he was not controlling the negative influence of the gem. And before anyone could respond, the Helicarrier shuddered violently as an explosion erupted somewhere in the distance.

Author's Note:

This chapter is a bit weird, structurally. I know. I was trying something but I don't know how it landed for you. I know my editor just gave up after reading it a couple of times. She was like 'my brain can't process this' Even after explaining the concept. I tried to tweek it but the sudden change in perspectives with Harry and the rest of the team makes it a bit jarring. Though, the confusing nature of the chapter is one of the effects that I wanted you to have too because, that's what the mind stone is trying to do too. Hence the weird structure. If at the end of the chapter you feel a headache, then 'well that's a desired affect.' I want you to feel that headache cause that's how the mind stone is manipulating you too (wink wink). And I was trying to add in a bit of different approach of not just restating the story. Oh, and what did you think about Harry's reveal and speech at the end. Where he brings everyone together. I took a bit from Fury's speech and added a bit of my own too. Was it good enough to rally the troops?

Also, the reason Harry not telling about magic is also the reason why this chapter's structure is a bit weird. And that is the mind stone. Instead of making Harry more aggressive, it enhances Harry's curiosity, so much so that he actively starts to ignore everyone and just concentrates on the Jem. He is using his magic to figure out what the gem is making him ignore everything around him. When Rhodey breaks his concentration, the mind stone conveniently slips away from his mind. So Harry's feelings in analogy are: 1 - when he enters the room, he sees something shiny, and it takes his whole attention away, making you forget what you were here for. Then the second part was that feeling you have where you are so focused that everything around you is a blur. Lastly, when you are having a thought but then someone distracts you, and you lose your train of thought, and you forget the thought in your head. - I was trying to play around with those concepts because it's the mind stone, and these are things that the mind does, which can get really frustrating at times. And in this chapter, I wanted the mind stone to show its power subtly.
