Chapter 45 - Cerulean City

The exit tunnel climbed steeply for the final hour, each step bringing them closer to the surface they'd been separated from for three days. Sasuke felt the change in air pressure, the gradual warming, the shift from cave-still atmosphere to wind carrying ocean salt.

"I can smell it," Kasumi said from behind him. She'd been energized for the past two hours, anticipation building with every upward step. "The sea. We're almost there."

Kiyomi checked her GPS, finally receiving satellite signal after days of nothing. "Two hundred meters to surface exit. We'll emerge in the eastern foothills, exactly where the maps predicted."

The tunnel mouth appeared ahead, a circle of brilliant daylight that made Sasuke's eyes water after so long in artificial illumination. They'd dimmed their flashlights gradually during the ascent, but nothing prepared them for actual sunlight.

They emerged onto a rocky hillside overlooking a valley that descended toward the ocean. And there, spread along the coastline like a jewel catching light, lay Cerulean City.

"Oh," Miyuki breathed. "Oh, it's beautiful."

Beautiful didn't quite cover it. The city was massive, Sasuke estimated the urban sprawl covered at least fifty square kilometers, built in tiers that followed the bay's natural curve. Architecture reflected the ocean theme: buildings with wave-like curves, blue and white color schemes, glass facades that caught and reflected water light. The bay itself was enormous, easily five kilometers across, filled with boats and Pokemon and sunlight dancing on gentle waves.

"Population thirty-two million," Kiyomi read from her downloaded city data. "Fourth largest in Kanto. Famous for Water Pokemon breeding, Contest culture, and Gym Leader Zabuza's sixty-three consecutive victories this season."

"Sixty-three," Sasuke repeated. Higher than Gaara's record. Zabuza would be a significant challenge.

"Also famous for having the best beaches in Kanto," Kasumi added. She'd pulled up tourist information on her phone. "And the Contest Hall seats fifteen thousand, which is... that's three times Azalea's capacity."

"Your first major Contest," Miyuki observed. "Nervous?"

"Terrified," Kasumi admitted cheerfully. "But also excited? Can you be both?"

"You've been both since we started this journey," Kiyomi said. "It's called being alive."

They began the descent toward the city proper. The hillside path was well-maintained, clearly a popular hiking route, with regular benches offering rest stops and viewpoints. When they reached the first parking area, Sasuke pulled the compressed Mobile Home from his backpack.

"Time to restore our house," he said, holding up what looked like a toy car, the navy-blue and silver RV reduced to palm-sized dimensions through spatial compression technology. "Everyone ready?"

The technology still amazed him even after two months of use. He placed the miniaturized Mobile Home on the empty parking space and pressed the expansion control. The vehicle shimmered, spatial fields reversing their compression, and within seconds their full-sized home materialized. Twenty-four feet of comfortable living space, their clothes still hanging in closets, their research materials exactly where they'd left them.

"Never gets old," Kasumi said. She'd already climbed into the passenger seat, claiming navigation duties. "Still feels like magic every time."

"Spatial physics, not magic," Kiyomi corrected, though her smile showed she felt the same wonder. "But yes, incredibly convenient for cave systems that don't accommodate vehicular traffic."

Miyuki settled into the back with Ryu, the young Bagon immediately curling into his familiar spot on her lap. Shaymin took its usual perch on the dashboard. Victini claimed Sasuke's shoulder. Everything familiar and comfortable, like putting on a favorite jacket after wearing unfamiliar clothes.

Sasuke started the engine, perfectly maintained despite days of compression, and guided their home toward the coastal road. Other trainers passed them going both directions, some in their own Mobile Homes, others on foot, a few riding Pokemon. Normal people doing normal things, unaware of ancient weapons and criminal conspiracies and the weight four rookies carried.

"We should contact Itachi as soon as we reach the Pokemon Center," Sasuke said. He'd been composing the message mentally during their hike. "Send everything, photos, coordinates, our account of events. Let him start the official investigation."

"And Officer Jenny," Miyuki added. "The one at the Mt. Moon checkpoint. She deserves to know her suspicions about Aether were correct."

"I'll reach out to Professor Oak and Dr. Takeshi," Kiyomi said. "Academic channels need to know about the historical significance of that site. Make it harder for Aether to claim it's just routine excavation."

"Berry Cultivation Association," Kasumi said. "I can frame it as conservation concern, rare berry species in Mt. Moon threatened by unauthorized digging. Gets environmental groups involved."

They had a plan. Multiple angles of approach, each person leveraging their connections and expertise. It felt more substantial than four teenagers trying to stop a criminal organization through force alone.

The coastal road into Cerulean was everything promised, ocean breeze carrying salt and seaweed, beautiful weather with scattered clouds that created moving shadows on the water, wild Pokemon playing in the surf. Krabby scuttled across tide pools. Tentacool drifted in the shallows. A pod of Seel performed synchronized swimming that would have made Contest Coordinators weep with envy.

"I want to live here," Kasumi declared. She'd moved to walk right at the waterline, letting waves lap at her boots. "Just cancel the rest of the journey. We live here now."

"The gym challenge might complicate that plan," Sasuke said.

"Minor detail. I'll become a beach hermit. Sustain myself on Magikarp and regret nothing."

"You'd miss Contest Halls after a week," Miyuki pointed out.

"Okay, beach hermit who occasionally goes to Contests. Final offer."

The Pokemon Center was, as promised, beachfront property. Three stories of blue-tinted glass and white stone, with outdoor terraces on each level that overlooked the bay. Palm trees, actual palm trees, somehow thriving this far north, lined the entrance walk. The whole effect screamed "tropical paradise" rather than "emergency medical facility."

"This is a Pokemon Center?" Kiyomi said dubiously. "It looks like a resort."

"Cerulean style," Sasuke said. He'd read about the city's approach to civic architecture, every building designed to celebrate water and beauty, even purely functional spaces. "Apparently they believe healing should happen in beautiful surroundings."

The interior maintained the theme. The lobby featured a massive aquarium that served as the back wall, three stories of glass containing a full ecosystem of Water Pokemon. Goldeen, Seaking, Horsea, even a Gyarados that circled the tank's perimeter with lazy grace. Natural light flooded through the glass ceiling. The air smelled faintly of ocean and flowers.

"Welcome to Cerulean City Pokemon Center," the Nurse Joy said from behind the counter. She wore the traditional pink uniform but with added blue accents that matched the local aesthetic. "Checking in for treatment or lodging?"

"Lodging," Sasuke said. "Two weeks, four trainers. We just emerged from Mt. Moon."

Joy's expression shifted to concern. "From Mt. Moon? Were you caught in the seismic activity? We received reports of collapsed tunnels three days ago. Search and rescue teams have been working around the clock."

"We found an alternate route," Sasuke said carefully. "Unmapped caves that led to the eastern foothills. We'd like to report our route to the rescue coordinator, might help with future operations."

"I'll connect you with Ranger Station Alpha immediately." Joy was already typing on her computer. "They'll want detailed maps and coordinates. Meanwhile, let me get you checked in. Four trainers, two weeks... I have a suite available on the third floor. Two bedrooms, shared common area, balcony overlooking the bay. Is that acceptable?"

"Perfect," Miyuki said.

They completed check-in with efficient professionalism, ID scans, Pokemon registration, emergency contact information, payment authorization. Joy provided room keys, meal vouchers for the Center's restaurant, and a packet of information about Cerulean City's amenities and attractions.

"You mentioned emerging from Mt. Moon," Joy said as she handed over the materials. "Was anyone injured during your time in the caves? Any Pokemon needing treatment?"

"Minor scrapes and exhaustion," Miyuki said. "We have a young Bagon who might benefit from a checkup, he's only a few weeks old."

"Bring him by the examination room in an hour. I'll do a full wellness check." Joy smiled warmly. "And welcome to Cerulean City. I hope your stay is restful after your ordeal."

The suite was everything promised and more. The lower level had a full kitchen, comfortable seating area, dining table, and entertainment center with a view directly onto the bay. Upper level contained two bedrooms, one with two queen beds, one with a king bed and attached office nook. The bathrooms were spa-quality with deep soaking tubs. And the balcony wrapped around the entire suite, offering unobstructed ocean views.

"I'm never leaving," Kasumi announced. She'd claimed the balcony immediately and was leaning against the railing with evident joy. "This is my home now. Bring me food occasionally."

"We brought you," Kiyomi said. "You have to share the space."

"Fine, but I'm calling the two-bed room. Miyuki, roommate?"

"Works for me." Miyuki had already started unpacking their supplies with characteristic organization. "Sasuke, you get the king bed and office. We know you'll use the workspace."

Sasuke didn't argue. The office nook had a desk with multiple monitor ports, comfortable chair, and enough surface space for research materials. He'd need it for strategic planning and documentation.

They unpacked with the efficiency of people who'd lived together for two months. Clothes hung in closets, toiletries arranged in bathrooms, cooking supplies transferred to the kitchen, research materials distributed to appropriate workspaces. The suite transformed from sterile lodging to their temporary home within an hour.

"Ranger call first," Sasuke said when they'd finished settling. "Then Itachi. Then individual contacts."

The Ranger coordinator was grateful for their survival and intensely interested in their alternate route. Sasuke shared Kiyomi's maps and coordinates, explaining the cave system's navigation while carefully omitting the ancient battlefield, the sealed weapon, and Aether's excavation. Those details went to Itachi first, chain of command mattered when dealing with conspiracy.

Itachi answered on the second ring despite the early afternoon timing. "Sasuke. I received your emergency beacon alert from Mt. Moon. You're safe?"

"Safe in Cerulean City." Sasuke had his laptop open, files prepared. "Sending you encrypted data now. Photos, coordinates, and a written account of what we found. Itachi, this is serious. Aether Foundation is excavating toward something dangerous in Mt. Moon's deep caves."

Silence on the line while Itachi reviewed the files. When he spoke again, his voice carried the weight of Champion authority. "This confirms intelligence we've been gathering. Aether has active operations in six regions, all targeting sealed sites from the pre-modern era. I've been trying to build a case for months, but they have political protection. This evidence might be enough."

"What do we do?" Sasuke asked.

"You do nothing," Itachi said firmly. "You're trainers on a badge journey, not investigators equipped to handle this level of threat. Focus on your gym challenges and let authorities handle Aether."

"The Elder said..."

"I don't care what the Elder said." Itachi's tone softened slightly. "I care that my little brother and his friends are safe. Promise me, Sasuke. No vigilante action. No investigating on your own. You report, you document, and you let qualified people handle the response."

Sasuke looked at the others, who'd gathered around the laptop. Each nodded slightly, agreement to stay within appropriate boundaries. "We promise. We're trainers, not heroes."

"Good." Itachi exhaled relief. "Stay in Cerulean for the planned duration. I'll send League security to guard the Mt. Moon site and begin excavation investigation. Meanwhile, focus on what you're actually there to do. Gym battles. Contests. Research. Living the journey you planned."

They ended the call with Itachi's assurance he'd handle everything. Officer Jenny received similar information with similar gratitude. Professor Oak listened to Kiyomi's historical analysis and immediately began coordinating with archaeological societies. The Berry Association took Kasumi's conservation concerns seriously and dispatched field investigators.

Multi-vector approach, each person contributing what they could contribute. It felt right, partnership over solo heroics, coordination over chaos.

"Now what?" Miyuki asked when all the calls were complete.

"Now we do what we came here to do," Sasuke said. He pulled up Cerulean City maps on his laptop. "Contest Hall is in the northern district. Gym is on the bay's western shore. Beaches run the entire coastline. Shopping district is central, research facilities are eastern, residential zones are southern."

"My Contest is in one week," Kasumi said. She'd already pulled up registration information. "That gives me seven days to prepare. Perfect timing."

"Gym battle two days after that," Sasuke added. "Zabuza needs formal challenge registration minimum five days in advance. I'll register tomorrow."

"Which gives me research time," Kiyomi said. "Cerulean City Library has the second-largest collection in Kanto. I can advance my dissertation work while we're here."

"And I can visit the breeding facilities," Miyuki said. "Cerulean is famous for Water-type breeding programs. Plus Ryu needs his wellness check with Nurse Joy."

Plans formed with comfortable coordination. They'd spend tomorrow settling in and handling logistics, Contest registration, gym challenge registration, library cards, facility tours. The day after would begin real preparation. Seven days to get Kasumi Contest-ready. Nine days to prepare for Zabuza. Two weeks in a city that felt like vacation despite the underlying tension of knowing what was happening in Mt. Moon.

"We should explore," Kasumi said as evening approached. "Walk the beach, get our bearings, see the city at sunset."

No one disagreed. They changed into casual clothes, beach-appropriate attire that felt wonderfully normal after days in cave-hiking gear, and descended to the waterfront. The boardwalk was crowded with evening traffic. Families with children, couples walking hand-in-hand, trainers letting their Water Pokemon play in the surf. Street vendors sold food and drinks and souvenirs. Musicians busked at strategic corners. The entire atmosphere radiated peace and joy and the simple pleasure of being alive near the ocean.

"This is perfect," Miyuki said. She'd released Shaymin, who flew in delighted loops around her head. "After everything in Mt. Moon... this feels like a reward."

They walked south along the beach as the sun descended toward the horizon. Orange and pink light painted the sky, reflected on calm water, created that perfect hour where everything looked like a painting. Wild Pokemon silhouetted against the sunset. Waves provided peaceful rhythm. And four trainers walked together in comfortable silence that didn't need filling.

Kasumi broke the quiet eventually. "Next week, I'll make you all proud."

"You already do," Sasuke said immediately. He'd been watching the sunset but looked at her now. "Every day. Every time you show your genuine love for your Pokemon. We're already proud."

"He's right," Miyuki added. She'd moved to walk beside Kasumi, creating a natural grouping of all four together. "Whatever happens at Cerulean Contest, we're proud of who you are, not just what you accomplish."

"This journey keeps getting better," Kiyomi said. She'd stopped photographing and was simply experiencing the moment. "Not easier, we just faced underground horrors and criminal conspiracies. But better. More meaningful. More... right."

"I'm glad we're together," Miyuki said quietly. "All four of us. However it happened, arranged by mothers or fate or whatever, I'm glad this is how we're traveling."

Sasuke found himself agreeing completely. Two months ago, he'd been terrified of traveling with strangers, of opening up after three years of isolation, of being vulnerable with people who might use that vulnerability against him. Now, walking on a beach at sunset with three people who'd become family, he couldn't imagine the journey any other way.

"Me too," he said. "I'm glad we're together."

They watched the sun disappear below the horizon, the sky transition through colors that didn't quite have names, the first stars appearing in the deepening blue. The ocean kept its rhythm. The city lights began twinkling behind them. And four trainers stood together on a beach in Cerulean City, alive and safe and ready for whatever came next.

Tomorrow they'd register for challenges and begin preparations. In a week, Kasumi would compete in the biggest Contest of her life. Nine days from now, Sasuke would face Zabuza in battle. Beyond that lay more cities, more badges, more ribbons, more growth and challenge and the slow march toward Silver Conference.
