Chapter 70 - Cascade Badge Battle IV

The crowd's reaction was delayed, three full seconds of shocked silence as they processed what had just happened. Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Mist, undefeated for three months, had just surrendered.

Then the arena erupted. Cheering so loud it physically hurt. People were on their feet, some crying, some screaming support. Media cameras were going wild, capturing every angle of the historic moment.

But Sasuke barely registered the crowd. His focus was entirely on Venusaur.

Both Pokemon were reverting from Gigantamax simultaneously, energy depletion forcing them back to normal size. Both Kingler and Venusaur stood in their base forms, breathing hard and clearly exhausted.

Kingler collapsed into the water, too tired to remain standing. Venusaur managed to stay upright through sheer determination, but he was swaying, clearly at his limits.

"You both fought incredibly," Sasuke said, recalling Venusaur to his Pokeball. "Rest now. You've earned it."

Zabuza approached across the battlefield, Kingler recalled to his own Pokeball. The gym leader stopped directly in front of Sasuke, and for a moment, they just looked at each other, two trainers who'd given everything to a battle and found mutual respect in the process.

Then Zabuza did something unexpected. He reached up and unwrapped the bandages covering the lower half of his face.

Beneath was scarring, old wounds from his previous life, reminders of violence and pain. But more importantly, there was a smile. Genuine and warm despite the harsh features.

"Twenty-three challengers before you," Zabuza said. "All defeated. Some with skill, most without. But you're the first who truly earned my respect. Not just through power, but through strategy, adaptability, and most importantly, the bond with your Pokemon."

He produced the Cascade Badge from his pocket. The badge was shaped like a water droplet in brilliant blue, with silver highlights that caught light beautifully.

"Sasuke Uchiha, you've proven yourself worthy of the Uchiha name. Not because of your brother or mother, but because of who you are and how you approach battle." Zabuza placed the badge in Sasuke's hand. "Your Venusaur's bond with you turned the tide. That's what separates good trainers from great ones."

Sasuke accepted the badge, feeling its weight, both physical and symbolic. Second badge earned.

"Thank you, Gym Leader. That battle taught me more than any amount of training could."

"Good. That's the point of gym challenges, not just testing strength but fostering growth." Zabuza rewrapped his face covering. "Your next challenge is Vermillion City, correct? Gym Leader Sakumo?"

"Yes."

"He's stronger than me. More experienced, deeper strategy, and his Pikachu is legendary. Don't underestimate based on species, that Pikachu has trained for forty years."

"I'll remember."

They shook hands, two warriors acknowledging mutual respect, then Zabuza stepped back.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" The announcer's voice boomed. "For the first time in three months, we have a successful challenger! Sasuke Uchiha has earned the Cascade Badge! The Uchiha legacy continues!"

The crowd's cheering intensified. Cameras flashed. Media representatives were already preparing questions for post-battle interviews.

But Sasuke's attention was on the challenger support section, where Miyuki, Kasumi, and Kiyomi were on their feet, cheering with obvious pride. Victini was bouncing on Miyuki's shoulder, sending victory energy across the distance.

That's what mattered. Not the crowd's approval or the media attention, but the pride of the people who actually knew him and supported his journey.

He made his way off the battlefield through stadium corridors designed for post-battle exit. The challenger support section met him at the designated location, a private room away from media chaos.

Kasumi reached him first, pulling him into a tight hug. "You were amazing! That environmental strategy, reshaping the entire battlefield, I've never seen anything like it!"

"Learned from watching your Contest battles," Sasuke replied, returning the hug. "You showed me that Pokemon battles are about more than just attacking. They're about controlling space, manipulating environments, forcing opponents to fight on your terms."

Miyuki joined the hug, creating a three-person embrace. "Venusaur needs immediate care. Nurse Joy is waiting with emergency medical equipment. But she says he'll recover fully, just exhaustion, no serious injuries."

"And you?" Kiyomi asked, remaining slightly apart but smiling. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired. Relieved. Proud." Sasuke extracted himself from the hug carefully. "That was the hardest battle I've fought so far. Zabuza's strategic intelligence is incredible. If Venusaur didn't have type advantage, I don't think we could have won."

"But you did win," Miyuki said firmly. "Second badge earned. On schedule for Indigo League qualification."

They made their way to the gym's Pokemon Center, a facility integrated into the building for immediate post-battle care. Nurse Joy was waiting with her Chansey assistants, medical equipment already prepared.

"Venusaur is being treated now," she explained as Sasuke handed over the Pokeball. "Severe energy depletion, minor physical trauma, some vine damage. Nothing permanent. He'll need two days of rest before he's battle-ready again."

"Take whatever time he needs. No rush."

"Professional attitude. That's good." Nurse Joy made notes on her tablet. "You should rest too. Trainers often forget that they experience sympathetic exhaustion during intense battles. Get proper sleep, eat well, stay hydrated."

They returned to the Mobile Home as evening settled over Cerulean City. The bay waters reflected sunset colors, orange and purple painting everything in warm tones.

Sasuke collapsed onto the living room couch with relief. Victini immediately claimed his lap, the Victory Pokemon chirping congratulations and radiating happiness.

"I'm cooking celebration dinner," Miyuki announced, heading toward the kitchen. "Something special for our favourite badge-winning trainer."

"I'll help," Kasumi added, following her.

Kiyomi settled onto the couch beside Sasuke, tablet in hand. "Media coverage is already extensive. Your battle is trending across Kanto regional news. Several analysts are calling it one of the best gym challenges in recent history."

"It felt like one of the hardest."

"It was. You faced an opponent specifically designed to counter conventional strategies, on a battlefield that negated most normal advantages, against a Pokemon whose defensive capabilities are legendary." Kiyomi's smile was approving. "And you won through creative thinking and superior bond with your Pokemon. That's championship-level performance."

"Still fourteen badges to go."

"Yes, but you've proven the pattern. Each gym leader will be different, each will require new strategies. But your fundamental approach, understanding opponents, adapting tactics, trusting your Pokemon, that foundation will carry you through."

Dinner was elaborate. Miyuki had prepared Sasuke's favorite dishes, apparently anticipating the victory and cooking ahead of time. They ate together, toasting with sparkling cider, celebrating not just the badge but the journey itself.

"Two cities complete," Kasumi said, raising her glass. "Two badges earned, one ribbon collected. We're making progress."

"To progress," Miyuki agreed, clinking glasses.

"To bonds that make progress meaningful," Kiyomi added.

"To family," Sasuke concluded, the word feeling right despite them not being blood-related. This group had become his family through shared experiences and mutual support.

They drank together, four people whose lives had intertwined through circumstance and choice, now committed to seeing this journey through to whatever end awaited.

That night, Sasuke stood on the RV's roof under stars, the Cascade Badge held carefully in his hand. The water droplet shape caught starlight, seeming to glow with internal illumination.

Boulder Badge from Pewter, Cascade Badge from Cerulean. Vermillion would give Thunder Badge next.

The journey stretched ahead, months more of travel, battles, contests, discoveries. Challenges both Pokemon-related and personal. The complexity of navigating feelings for three people while trying to hurt none of them.

But tonight, those complications could wait.

Tonight was for celebrating victory, for acknowledging growth, for appreciating the bonds that made challenges bearable and successes meaningful.

Sasuke looked up at the stars, the same stars that had watched over his journey from Blackthorn to here, and felt profound gratitude.

For his Pokemon who fought with unwavering trust. For his companions who supported without judgment. For the journey itself, with all its complexity and challenge and unexpected beauty.
