The Celadon Historical Library rose from the city's governmental quarter like a monument to knowledge itself.
Five stories of classical architecture housed what librarians claimed was the largest collection of documents in Kanto, millions of volumes spanning centuries of recorded history, organized by systems so complex that casual visitors often became lost within minutes. For Kiyomi, it represented something approaching paradise.
"I'll be here all day," she'd told the others at breakfast. "Possibly multiple days. Don't wait up."
They hadn't argued. After months of travel, they understood that Kiyomi's research sessions were sacred time, periods when she dove into archives with an intensity that excluded everything else.
The reception staff had been expecting her. Professor Sarutobi's recommendation letter preceded her arrival, opening doors that ordinary researchers couldn't access. The special collections wing. The restricted archives. Files that hadn't been examined in decades.
"You have particular research interests?" the head archivist asked, leading her through corridors lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
"Organizational history. Specifically, I'm investigating the Aether Foundation."
The archivist's expression flickered, brief, controlled, but unmistakable.
"That's... a complicated topic."
"I've noticed. Which is why I need primary sources."
The research began with official records.
Aether Foundation's registration documents dated back fifty years, establishing it as a legitimate research organization focused on Pokémon conservation and study. The founder's name was Mohn, a brilliant scientist whose early work on interdimensional phenomena had earned international recognition.
"Legitimate origins," Kiyomi murmured, photographing relevant documents. "Whatever Aether became, it didn't start that way."
Mohn's tenure as director had produced genuinely valuable research. Studies on habitat preservation. Conservation protocols that were still industry standard. Rescue operations that had saved endangered species. The organization under his leadership had been exactly what its public face claimed.
Then, twenty years ago, Mohn had disappeared.
The records were vague on specifics. A research expedition to study interdimensional phenomena, his specialty, had gone wrong. Mohn had vanished, presumed dead, leaving behind a wife, children, and an organization suddenly without leadership.
The new director had assumed control within months.
Danzo Shimura.
The name triggered associations that made Kiyomi's skin crawl.
She'd heard of Danzo, everyone who followed Kantonian politics had. A former League official whose career had ended in disgrace twenty-five years earlier. Accusations of corruption, bribery, and something darker that official records euphemistically termed "inappropriate exercise of authority."
He'd been removed from his League position, but never prosecuted. Too many connections. Too much leverage. The kind of person who accumulated power through favors and threats rather than merit.
And somehow, this man had taken control of a legitimate conservation organization.
Kiyomi dug deeper.
Under Danzo's leadership, Aether Foundation had expanded dramatically. New facilities across multiple regions. Increased funding from sources that financial records didn't clearly identify. Personnel rosters that included individuals with backgrounds in security and enforcement rather than research.
The public face remained pristine. Conservation efforts continued. Research papers were published. Donations flowed to politically connected causes.
But behind that facade...
Kiyomi found the first incident report buried in a regional archive that probably shouldn't have been accessible.
The pattern emerged across dozens of documents.
Suspicious acquisitions of rare Pokémon species. Breeding programs that produced specimens with unusual characteristics. Research facilities that local officials couldn't inspect despite having legal authority to do so. Pokémon trafficking rings that seemed to operate with impunity in regions where Aether maintained significant presence.
"They're hiding in plain sight," Kiyomi realized, her voice barely audible. "Using legitimate operations as cover for illegal ones."
The evidence was circumstantial but overwhelming. Too many incidents to be coincidence. Too many connections to be random. Too many outcomes that benefited Aether while harming others.
And nothing had ever been prosecuted.
"Connections and blackmail," Kiyomi deduced. "Danzo learned how to protect himself before he ever took control. The same skills that kept him out of prison as a League official now shield his organization."
Regional administrators who approved suspicious permits. League officials who declined to investigate complaints. Law enforcement that ignored tips about Aether activities. The network of protection was extensive, sophisticated, and clearly effective.
The most disturbing discovery came from a file that shouldn't have existed.
Kiyomi found it misfiled in a collection of outdated geological surveys, either careless archiving or deliberate hiding. The document was labeled Project Seal-Break: Preliminary Assessment.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
"Project Seal-Break," she read aloud, her voice barely audible. "Objective: identification and exploitation of ancient sealed locations containing dormant or imprisoned Pokémon of exceptional power."
The document detailed multiple target sites. Mt. Moon, listed as "partially accessed, extraction unsuccessful, site compromised." The Power Plant "preliminary investigation complete, target not present." The ruins they'd discovered on Route 11 "artifacts secured, site sanitized."
Each entry confirmed what Kiyomi had suspected: Aether Foundation wasn't randomly stealing from historical locations. They were systematically hunting for something, or someone, sealed away by ancient peoples who had understood the danger of certain powers.
She continued reading with growing horror.
Then she found the entry that stopped her heart.
"Tree of Beginning Project: Status - Active Planning."
The words blurred as Kiyomi's vision narrowed.
"Location: Blackthorn Region. Target: Ancient power source maintained by Uchiha Clan guardians. Assessment: Significant security barriers. Clan awareness of location's significance. Direct assault not recommended. Alternative approaches under consideration."
The Tree of Beginning. Sasuke's home. The sacred site his family had protected for generations.
Aether Foundation was planning to exploit it.
The document continued with clinical detachment. Analysis of the Tree's purported abilities. Estimated power levels if those abilities could be harnessed. Discussion of how Uchiha guardianship complicated access. Proposals for "neutralizing defensive elements" that Kiyomi understood to mean eliminating the family that stood in Aether's way.
"This is personal now," she whispered.
She photographed everything. Every page. Every reference. Every terrifying detail of plans that threatened not just historical sites, but the people she cared about.
Then she ran.
The emergency meeting convened in their suite's common room.
Kiyomi's usual analytical composure had cracked, her voice carrying urgency that immediately silenced casual conversation. She spread her photographs across the table, pointing to key documents as she explained what she'd found.
"Aether Foundation is fifty years old. Originally legitimate under a scientist named Mohn, who disappeared twenty years ago. Since then, it's been controlled by Danzo Shimura, a disgraced former League official with extensive connections and no moral boundaries."
"We knew they were corrupt," Kasumi said slowly.
"This goes beyond corruption." Kiyomi pointed to the Project Seal-Break documents. "They're systematically hunting for ancient sealed locations, places where powerful Pokémon were imprisoned or dormant. Mt. Moon wasn't random. The ruins on Route 11 weren't random. They have a list of targets."
Sasuke had gone very still. "What targets?"
Kiyomi's gaze met his. "Including the Tree of Beginning. They have active plans to exploit your family's sacred site."
The silence that followed was absolute.
"Show me," Sasuke said, his voice carrying ice that none of them had ever heard from him.
Sasuke read the relevant documents three times.
His expression didn't change, but something in his eyes had hardened into something cold and dangerous. Victini, sensing its partner's emotional state, pressed close against his shoulder with concerned chirps that went unacknowledged.
"They want to 'neutralize defensive elements,'" he said finally. "That means my family."
"The document discusses multiple approaches. Direct assault isn't recommended, but..."
"But they're considering it. They're considering eliminating the Uchiha to access the Tree."
"Sasuke..." Miyuki reached for him, but he was already moving, communicator in hand.
The call to Itachi connected immediately.
"Sasuke. This is unexpected. Is something wrong?"
"Aether Foundation is targeting the Tree of Beginning." Sasuke's voice was controlled, but barely. "They have documented plans. Project Seal-Break. They're hunting ancient sealed locations, and the Tree is on their list."
Silence on the other end.
Then, "I know."
"You know?"
"We've been aware of Aether's interest in the Tree for some time. Father and I have been reinforcing defenses for the past year. The Uchiha Clan is on high alert."
"A year? You've known for a year and didn't tell me?"
"We didn't want to distract you from your journey." Itachi's voice was calm, patient, the tone he used when delivering difficult information. "You have enough challenges without worrying about threats you can't personally address."
"Our family is in danger!"
"Our family is protected. The Uchiha have guarded the Tree for generations. We've faced threats before. Aether is dangerous, but they're not unprecedented." A pause. "Focus on your journey, Sasuke. Your gym battles, your companions, your growth. We'll handle the threat to home."
"I should come back."
"And do what? Add one more defender to hundreds who already stand ready? Your place is on your journey. Your role is becoming the trainer you're meant to be." Itachi's voice softened. "Trust us. Trust me. I won't let anything happen to our home or our family."
Sasuke wanted to argue. Wanted to abandon his journey, return to Blackthorn, stand beside his family against whatever Aether planned.
But he knew Itachi was right.
"Fine. But contact me immediately if anything changes."
"I will. And Sasuke?"
"Yes?"
"The information your companion found, Kiyomi, correct? That's valuable intelligence. Make sure it reaches the appropriate authorities through unofficial channels. If Aether has protection within the League bureaucracy, official reporting might be compromised."
"Understood."
"Be careful. All of you."
The call ended.
The room remained silent long after.
Sasuke stood at the window, staring out at Celadon's evening lights without seeing them. His family was in danger. His home, the Tree of Beginning, the sacred site that had defined Uchiha identity for generations, was targeted by an organization that had proven willing to destroy anything in their path.
And he was here. Miles away. Unable to help.
"He's right, you know." Kiyomi's voice was gentle. "Itachi. About trusting them to handle it."
"I know he's right. That doesn't make it easier."
"No. It doesn't."
Miyuki approached cautiously, standing beside him at the window. "The Uchiha are one of the most powerful families in the region. Your father, your brother, the entire Uchiha Clan. If anyone can protect the Tree, they can."
"And if they can't?"
"Then we'll deal with that if it happens. But borrowing worry from a future that might not come..." Miyuki's hand found his arm, squeezing gently. "That doesn't help anyone."
Kasumi joined them. "What we can do is make sure Kiyomi's research reaches the right people. Build the case against Aether that eventually brings them down."
"And become strong enough that when the confrontation comes, because it will come eventually, we're ready to face it." Kiyomi's voice carried determination that had replaced her earlier alarm. "This isn't just about the Tree anymore. It's about everything Aether represents. They have to be stopped."
Sasuke looked at his companions, friends who had become family over months of shared journey.
"Together," he said finally.
"Together," they echoed.
