Chapter 128 - Tsunade vs. Sasuke

The Celadon Gym Stadium rose above the surrounding district like a colosseum designed for legends.

Eighty thousand seats arranged in ascending tiers, every one of them filled. The largest gym facility in Kanto had been built for moments exactly like this, when a challenger worthy of spectacle faced a gym leader who rarely deigned to accept battles personally.

Sasuke stood at the challenger's entrance, watching the crowd through the tunnel's shadows. The noise was overwhelming, a sustained roar that vibrated through his bones despite the distance.

"Supernova versus The Senju Matriarch!" The announcer's voice cut through the din. "Sasuke Uchiha of the legendary Uchiha Clan faces Tsunade Senju, undefeated champion of Celadon and one of the strongest trainers alive!"

"You've got this." Miyuki's voice came from his communicator, her face visible on the small screen. She sat with Kasumi and Kiyomi in the reserved seating section, close enough to the field to see everything. "Remember what we practiced."

"I remember."

"Grandmother will test you. Don't let her control the pace."

"I won't."

He stepped into the light.

The arena was a jungle.

Trees rose throughout the battlefield, ancient specimens that had been cultivated specifically for gym battles, their canopies providing cover and their roots creating terrain hazards. Vines hung from branches. Flowers bloomed in strategic clusters. The entire field had been designed to favor Grass-types in every conceivable way.

Sasuke took his position at the challenger's platform, assessing the environment with tactical precision. Every tree was a potential obstacle. Every vine could become a weapon. This wasn't just a battle, it was combat in enemy territory.

Tsunade emerged from the opposite entrance.

The Gym Leader moved with the unhurried confidence of someone who had seen hundreds of challengers and defeated nearly all of them. Her presence commanded attention without demanding it, the kind of authority that came from decades of excellence rather than self-promotion.

"Sasuke Uchiha." Her voice carried across the field without amplification. "Miyuki has told me quite a bit about you."

"Only good things, I hope."

"She says you're extraordinary. That your bond with your Pokémon transcends normal partnership." Tsunade's expression was unreadable. "I'm here to verify that claim."

"Then don't hold back."

"I never do." A slight smile crossed her features, the first hint of emotion she'd shown. "Give me everything you have, young Uchiha. Nothing less will suffice."

"This will be a one-on-one battle!" The referee's voice echoed through the stadium. "Each trainer may use one Pokémon. Mega Evolution, Primal Reversion, Dynamax, and Gigantamax are all permitted. The battle ends when one Pokémon is unable to continue. Trainers, send out your Pokémon!"

Tsunade's Pokéball flew with casual precision. "Venusaur."

The Seed Pokémon materialized at the field's center, its massive form settling among the jungle terrain like it belonged there. Forty years of partnership with Tsunade had produced a Venusaur unlike any other, larger than standard specimens, its flower radiating health that suggested power beyond normal parameters.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd as Sasuke released his own partner.

"Blastoise."

The Shellfish Pokémon emerged with confident stance, water cannons already oriented toward its opponent. The type disadvantage was obvious to everyone watching, Water against Grass, attacking into resistance.

"Bold choice," Tsunade observed. "Most challengers bring Fire-types. You've chosen the harder path."

"The obvious path is the predictable path."

"Indeed it is." Tsunade's smile widened slightly. "Let's see if wisdom justifies your boldness."

The referee's flag dropped.

"Battle begin!"

Tsunade struck first, and the battlefield transformed.

"Vine Whip!"

Venusaur's vines erupted in all directions, not just two, but dozens. They burst from the ground, descended from trees, emerged from every conceivable angle. The entire arena became a web of reaching tendrils seeking Blastoise's shell.

"Dodge and freeze!"

Blastoise moved with surprising agility for its bulk, rolling sideways as vines snapped through space it had occupied. Its cannons tracked the nearest threats, and Ice Beam erupted in controlled bursts.

Frozen vines shattered. The temperature around Blastoise dropped dramatically as ice spread across any tendril that came too close. The strategy was working, creating a zone of cold that Grass-types couldn't easily penetrate.

"Interesting." Tsunade's voice carried genuine appreciation. "You've taught your Water-type Ice moves. Mixed approach to overcome type disadvantage."

"We've been practicing."

"Show me more. Power Whip!"

The attack came from underground, a vine that had burrowed beneath Blastoise's position, erupting with force that sent the Shellfish Pokémon stumbling. The impact was significant, Power Whip's enhanced strength overcoming whatever resistance Blastoise's shell provided.

"Counter! Water Gun!"

The attack struck Venusaur directly, but the Grass-type barely flinched. Half-damage from resistance. The type disadvantage was asserting itself despite Sasuke's strategy.

"You'll need more than that," Tsunade observed.

"Solar Beam!"

The attack came without warning, Venusaur's flower gathering sunlight that seemed to appear from nowhere. The beam that erupted was devastating, pure Grass-type energy that Blastoise could only tank with its shell.

Impact. Pain. Blastoise was forced backward, cannons struggling to maintain targeting through the assault.

"Blastoise!"

The Shellfish Pokémon emerged from the Solar Beam's aftermath damaged but standing. Its shell showed scorch marks where the attack had landed, but determination remained evident in its stance.

"Not enough to end it," Sasuke said.

"Not yet," Tsunade agreed. "But the battle has only begun."

The exchange that followed established the battle's rhythm.

Venusaur controlled the battlefield through reach, vines and tendrils creating pressure that kept Blastoise constantly moving. Solar Beam charged during openings, forcing Sasuke to choose between advancing and defending.

Blastoise fought back with Ice Beam harassment, freezing vines and creating temporary openings. Hydro Pump struck when opportunities arose, but each hit delivered only partial damage against Venusaur's resistance.

"You're surviving," Tsunade observed after several minutes of sustained combat. "But surviving isn't winning."

"Neither is stalling."

"Who said I'm stalling?" Tsunade's expression shifted. "I'm analyzing. Understanding. Preparing."

"Preparing for what?"

"This." Tsunade's hand rose to the Key Stone on her wrist. "Mega Evolution!"

Energy erupted from Venusaur as Mega Evolution transformed the already-impressive Pokémon into something legendary. The flower on its back bloomed massively, petals spreading to catch light that now seemed concentrated entirely on the Grass-type. Defense increased. Special Attack skyrocketed. Thick Fat ability provided additional resistance to Ice.

Mega Venusaur. One of the most defensively formidable Pokémon in competitive battling.

"The advantages you were exploiting," Tsunade explained calmly..."no longer apply. Ice Beam is now resisted. Your damage output has dropped significantly."

The crowd's roar suggested they understood the tactical shift. Sasuke's strategy, clever as it had been, was suddenly obsolete.

"You think I didn't expect this?" Sasuke's hand found his own Key Stone. "We're not done yet!"

"Mega Evolution!"

Blastoise's transformation matched Venusaur's intensity.

The Mega Evolution produced changes that emphasized offensive capability, twin shoulder cannons emerging to supplement the main armament, shell reinforcement providing additional bulk. Mega Blastoise's Mega Launcher ability would enhance certain attacks to devastating levels.

"Impressive," Tsunade acknowledged. "But Mega Evolution doesn't change type matchups. You're still attacking into resistance."

"I'm still attacking. That's what matters."

"Then attack."

"Hydro Pump, full power!"

All three cannons fired simultaneously, water compressed beyond natural limits erupting toward Mega Venusaur with force that should have been impossible. The enhanced output from Mega Launcher pushed the technique beyond standard parameters.

Mega Venusaur braced, taking the hit with defensive stance.

The impact was significant, even with resistance, the sheer power of Mega Blastoise's enhanced attack forced the Grass-type backward. Damage had been dealt. Real damage.

"Ah." Tsunade's expression shifted to something approaching respect. "Your Mega Launcher enhancement. Impressive force."

"And we're just getting started."

"Then so are we. Synthesis!"

Green light suffused Mega Venusaur as it recovered health at accelerated rates. The damage from Hydro Pump began reversing, the Grass-type's wounds healing through photosynthesis enhanced by the arena's artificial lighting.

"Recovery," Sasuke muttered.

"Attrition strategy," Tsunade confirmed. "I can heal faster than you can damage. Time is on my side."

The battle had reached its crucial moment. Sasuke could continue trading attacks, Water versus Grass, dealing half-damage while Tsunade recovered everything, or he could escalate to the strategy they'd prepared.

He met Blastoise's gaze. The Pokémon understood.

It was time.
