Chapter 133 - Preliminary Rounds

The Celadon Contest Hall hummed with energy that exceeded anything Kasumi had experienced.

Fifty thousand seats filled to capacity. Broadcast equipment transmitting to viewers across Kanto and beyond. An atmosphere that transformed what should have been simple performance into something approaching theatrical combat.

"One hundred twenty-eight Coordinators," the announcer declared. "Sixty-four will advance after today's Appeal Round. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the most prestigious Contest in Kanto!"

The crowd's roar was overwhelming.

Kasumi sat in the competitor's section, violet eyes tracking the stage with analytical focus. Her draw, slot eighty-seven, placed her late in the order, which meant hours of watching before her own moment arrived.

Advantage, she reminded herself. I see what works. I see what doesn't. I adjust.

The first Coordinators began their performances, and Kasumi settled in to study.

Performance #23: Sakura Haruno

The pink-haired Coordinator had grown since their last encounter. Her Roserade moved with practiced grace, petals catching light as it positioned for the routine.

"Sunshine Garden!" Sakura announced.

Petal Dance erupted first, creating a swirling storm of color that filled the stage. Roserade's movements were confident, each gesture releasing more petals until the air itself seemed to bloom.

Solar Beam charged during the dance, energy building visibly until release, but not as attack. The beam diffused through the petal storm, creating patterns of light that suggested sunrise over a flower field.

The effect was beautiful. Professional. Exactly what Contest judges expected from a three-ribbon Coordinator.

But familiar.

Kasumi recognized elements from Sakura's previous performances, refined rather than revolutionized. The judges would see the same thing.

"Score: eight-point-nine out of ten!"

Good, but not great. Sakura's expression suggested she'd hoped for more.

Performance #45: Ino Yamanaka

The platinum blonde had clearly invested in her recovery since Vermillion.

"Mind Palace!" she announced, releasing her Alakazam.

The Psi Pokémon's spoons began rotating immediately, Psychic energy building in visible spirals. The stage transformed, walls of mental force creating the illusion of architecture that existed only through telepathic projection.

Ino moved through her created space, her Alakazam's power responding to her choreography. Rooms appeared and dissolved. Staircases led to impossible angles. The entire performance suggested a mind made manifest.

Technical skill was undeniable. Ino had mastered something sophisticated.

"Score: nine-point-one out of ten!"

Strong enough to advance, probably. But several performances remained that could push her ranking down.

Performance #56: May

The Hoenn veteran took the stage with the casual confidence of someone who had performed at this level countless times.

"Hoenn Breeze," she said simply, releasing Beautifly.

The Butterfly Pokémon's wings caught light immediately, their patterns shimmering with colors that suggested tropical forests. Silver Wind began not as attack but as ambiance, gentle currents that lifted both Coordinator and Pokémon into performance space.

Morning Sun followed, but transformed. The technique's healing energy became stage effect, golden light spreading through the Silver Wind currents to create an atmosphere of warm coastal morning. The audience could almost smell salt air and tropical flowers.

May moved through her routine without apparent effort. Every gesture was natural. Every transition was invisible. Years of competition had refined her art until technique disappeared into expression.

"Score: nine-point-five out of ten!"

The crowd's reaction suggested they understood the ranking. This was what excellence looked like.

Kasumi felt pressure building in her chest. She makes it look effortless. How do I compete with effortless?

Performance #71: Dawn

The Sinnoh prodigy bounded onto stage with characteristic energy, her Empoleon gliding beside her with regal dignity.

"Diamond Dust!"

Hydro Pump erupted upward, not outward, creating a column of water that reached toward the venue's ceiling. Before gravity could reclaim it, Ice Beam transformed the cascade into crystalline formations that caught every light in the hall.

Empoleon conducted the ice sculpture with precise movements, each gesture adding detail to structures that grew more complex with every passing second. The column became a tree. The tree became a forest. The forest became a mountain range of pure crystal.

Dawn danced through her creation, her small form weaving between ice sculptures that towered above her. The contrast, adorable human amid powerful creation, communicated something about partnership that transcended technique.

"Score: nine-point-four out of ten!"

Dawn's reaction was pure joy, bouncing in place, hugging her Empoleon, waving to the crowd with unbridled enthusiasm.

She's four-tenths ahead of me before I've even performed, Kasumi calculated. And she's young enough that her ceiling is nowhere close to reached.

The performances continued, each one adding pressure to what Kasumi would face.

Nine-point-twos. Nine-point-ones. Occasional nine-point-threes. The competition was brutally consistent, nearly everyone who reached Celadon had earned their presence.

By the time slot eighty-six concluded, the leaderboard showed May at 9.5, Dawn at 9.4, and several others clustered in the 9.0-9.3 range.

"Next: Kasumi Uzumaki, representing Goldenrod City!"

The moment had arrived.

Kasumi walked to the stage center with composure she didn't entirely feel.

The crowd was different from Vermillion, larger, more sophisticated, harder to impress. Fifty thousand faces looked down at her, each one a judge in their own right.

Don't think about them. Think about your Pokémon. Think about the routine. Think about what you love.

She released Butterfree.

The Butterfly Pokémon emerged with familiar grace, its wings immediately beginning their characteristic dance. But something was different this time, attached to its wings were small pouches that Kasumi had spent days preparing.

"Berry Blossom."

Quiver Dance began the routine, but this wasn't standard execution.

As Butterfree's wings moved through the dance, the pouches released their contents, pollen from Kasumi's personally cultivated berry flowers. Oran, Sitrus, Pecha, Rawst, each variety carrying its own color, its own scent, its own energy.

The pollen spread through the stage area, creating a visible cloud of color that shimmered with natural beauty. But more than visual effect, the release carried aromatherapy properties that Kasumi had specifically engineered.

The audience began to react.

Subtle shifts in posture. Deeper breathing. Relaxation spreading through the stands as the calming properties of Sitrus and Pecha pollen reached their noses. Simultaneously, the energizing qualities of Oran and Rawst provided alertness that prevented drowsiness.

The judges leaned forward, clearly experiencing something they hadn't expected.

"Silver Wind," Kasumi commanded.

The attack transformed the pollen cloud.

Butterfree's Silver Wind caught the floating particles, organizing chaos into patterns. The wind currents created spirals, then gardens, then entire landscapes of color that seemed to grow and bloom in mid-air.

A living garden suspended above the stage.

Kasumi moved through the creation, her dress catching pollen that made her seem part of the natural tableau. Butterfree danced overhead, its wings spreading more pollen while Silver Wind maintained the structures they'd created.

The effect was unprecedented. Not merely beautiful, experiential. The audience wasn't watching a performance; they were inside one, breathing the same air, feeling the same calm energy, sharing the same moment.

"Finale," Kasumi whispered.

Butterfree understood.

Sleep Powder emerged, not as weapon, but as artistic choice.

The sparkling particles mixed with berry pollen, adding shimmer to the floating garden. But Sleep Powder's properties were carefully controlled, mixed with energizing pollens to create a dreamy alertness rather than actual drowsiness.

The audience felt suspended between sleep and wake, that perfect moment of twilight consciousness when everything seemed possible.

Butterfree descended through the garden it had created, landing gently on Kasumi's shoulder. The pollen began settling, catching light as it drifted downward like multicolored snow.

Silence.

Then applause that seemed to shake the building itself.

"Remarkable innovation!" The head judge's voice competed with the crowd's reaction. "We've never seen a performance that engaged the audience's senses so directly! The combination of Coordinator skill and berry cultivation expertise represents genuine creative achievement!"

"Score: nine-point-six out of ten!"

TIED HIGHEST.

The number blazed on the display board, matching May's dominant performance despite the Hoenn veteran's years of additional experience.

Kasumi bowed, her composure cracking into a smile that revealed how much the score meant. Butterfree chirped happiness against her shoulder, its wings still carrying traces of the pollen that had made their routine unique.

In the competitor's section, she found her companions' faces among the crowd.

Miyuki was crying.

Kiyomi was grinning.

Sasuke was nodding with satisfaction that communicated everything necessary.

The preliminary round concluded with Kasumi tied for the highest score.

Sakura advanced at 8.9. Ino advanced at 9.1. Dawn held second place at 9.4. May shared the lead at 9.5.

And Kasumi stood beside them, her 9.6 proving that innovation could compete with experience.

"You did it," Miyuki said when they reunited after the round. "You actually did it."

"We did it." Kasumi hugged Butterfree. "All of us."

"Tomorrow will be harder," Kiyomi warned. "The themed round will test different skills."

"Then we'll prepare for different skills." Kasumi's confidence had solidified into something real. "Tonight we celebrate making it this far."
