Chapter 167 - Contest Battle Rounds

The elimination rounds began with stakes that performance rounds hadn't carried.

Twenty-four Coordinators remained, survivors of themed challenges who now faced combat that would cut their numbers systematically. Round of 24, then 12, then 6 for semifinals, then finals. Each battle eliminated half the remaining field until only one champion stood.

"Battle performances combine combat and artistry," the announcer reminded the audience. "Victory matters, but style of victory determines final scoring."

Kasumi studied the bracket with focus that months of experience had sharpened.

Win beautifully. That's the only path forward.

Round of 24: Kasumi (#1) vs Coordinator (#24)

The seeding advantage manifested immediately.

Kasumi's opponent was a capable Coordinator, talented enough to reach the top twenty-four, but the experience gap was visible before the battle even began. Nervous energy showed in posture that confident Coordinators never displayed.

"Glaceon!"

The Fresh Snow Pokémon emerged with crystalline elegance, ice-blue fur catching stage lights in patterns that suggested deliberate beauty.

"Hypno!"

The Hypnosis Pokémon materialized with Psychic presence that should have created intimidation, but Glaceon's Ice-typing provided natural resistance to mental effects.

"Battle begin!"

"Aurora Veil!"

The defensive technique established Kasumi's control immediately. Prismatic light surrounded Glaceon, creating protection while simultaneously generating visual spectacle that the judges couldn't ignore.

"Hypnosis!"

The opponent's attempt to establish status advantage met Glaceon's calm resistance. The hypnotic waves washed over ice-type composure without effect.

"Blizzard!"

The counter came with power that ended debates about outcome. Glaceon's most powerful technique filled the arena with ice and snow, the attack's beauty matching its force. Hypno collapsed beneath the frozen assault.

"Hypno is unable to battle! Winner: Kasumi Uzumaki!"

"Score: nine-point-four out of ten!"

Comfortable victory. Exactly what top seeds were expected to produce.

Round of 24: Ino (#2) vs Coordinator (#23)

The home favorite demonstrated why Saffron celebrated her.

"Alakazam!"

The Psi Pokémon emerged with overwhelming presence. Its spoons rotated in patterns that suggested calculations beyond mortal comprehension.

"Slowbro!"

The Hermit Crab Pokémon's bulk should have provided defense against Psychic attacks, both shared the typing, after all.

But shared typing didn't mean equal power.

"Psychic, full force!"

Alakazam's telekinetic assault lifted Slowbro despite its massive weight. The pressure was visible, physical deformation that the Water/Psychic type's bulk couldn't resist.

The battle lasted moments.

"Slowbro is unable to battle! Winner: Ino Yamanaka!"

"Score: nine-point-five out of ten!"

Dominant victory that reminded everyone why Ino had earned her position.

Round of 24: Hinata (#3) vs Coordinator (#22)

The Hyuga heiress entered with the quiet determination that characterized her growth.

"Sylveon!"

The Intertwining Pokémon's ribbons flowed with Fairy-type grace that Hinata had spent years developing.

"Golduck!"

The Duck Pokémon's Water/Psychic typing should have created advantages, but Fairy resistance to Psychic combined with Sylveon's natural elegance shifted the calculus.

"Draining Kiss!"

Sylveon's signature move came with gentleness that somehow enhanced its effectiveness. The Fairy-type technique drained energy while healing its user, a combination that extended battles Hinata's way.

The Golduck couldn't overcome the steady attrition.

"Golduck is unable to battle! Winner: Hinata Hyuga!"

"Score: nine-point-three out of ten!"

Gentle triumph that reflected Hinata's personality perfectly.

Round of 24: Sakura (#4) vs Coordinator (#21)

The pink-haired Coordinator had developed strategies that compensated for raw power limitations.

"Roserade!"

The Bouquet Pokémon emerged with Grass/Poison elegance that concealed dangerous capability.

"Mr. Mime!"

The Barrier Pokémon's Psychic/Fairy typing created complex type interactions, neither side held clear advantage.

"Toxic!"

Sakura's strategy became clear immediately. Rather than attempting to overpower her opponent, she would outlast them. Poison damage accumulated over time while Roserade maintained defensive positioning.

"Light Screen!"

Mr. Mime's barriers reduced incoming damage, but they couldn't stop poison already in the system.

The battle became endurance test.

Roserade waited. Mr. Mime weakened. Toxic damage accumulated beyond what barriers could prevent.

"Mr. Mime is unable to continue! Winner: Sakura Haruno!"

"Score: nine-point-two out of ten!"

Strategic victory that showed Sakura's growth beyond simple power approaches.

Round of 12: Kasumi (#1) vs Veteran (#13)

The second elimination round brought genuine challenge.

Kasumi's opponent was a three-ribbon veteran, someone who had competed at this level repeatedly and understood what was required. The confidence that had been absent in the twenty-fourth seed was fully present now.

"Butterfree!"

Kasumi's choice surprised observers. The Butterfly Pokémon was her original partner, but Bug/Flying versus Psychic-types created obvious disadvantage.

"Alakazam!"

Another Psi Pokémon, though this one lacked Ino's specimen's extraordinary power. Still dangerous. Still capable of exploiting type weakness.

"Battle begin!"

"Psychic!"

The immediate assault came with force that reflected veteran strategy, eliminate type-disadvantaged opponents before they could establish positions.

"Dodge!"

Butterfree's aerial agility avoided the telekinetic attack. The Butterfly Pokémon's flight patterns were unpredictable, developed through years of partnership that the opponent couldn't have studied.

"Sleep Powder!"

The status move scattered across the battlefield, finding Alakazam despite the Psi Pokémon's attempts to teleport away. The spores settled. Eyes grew heavy. Consciousness faded.

"Dream Eater!"

The Psychic-type move, learned specifically for moments like this, drained health from the sleeping opponent while restoring Butterfree's own reserves.

"Wake up!"

The opponent's desperate command couldn't overcome Sleep Powder's effect. Alakazam stirred but didn't rise.

"Again!"

More Dream Eater. More damage. More recovery for Butterfree.

The Psi Pokémon finally collapsed, sleep transitioning to unconsciousness.

"Alakazam is unable to battle! Winner: Kasumi Uzumaki!"

"Score: nine-point-five out of ten!"

Close battle won through strategy that type charts alone couldn't predict.

Round of 12: Ino (#2) vs Coordinator (#11)

The home favorite continued her dominance.

Alakazam's power exceeded anything the field could match directly. Each opponent fell to overwhelming Psychic force that precision training had refined beyond normal parameters.

"Score: nine-point-six out of ten!"

The highest battle round score of the day.

Round of 12: Hinata (#3) vs Coordinator (#10)

The upset shouldn't have happened.

Hinata's opponent was ranked higher, more experienced, possessing Psychic-types that should have controlled the battle's flow. All advantages favored the tenth seed.

But Sylveon refused to accept disadvantage.

The battle was grueling, both Pokémon pushing limits that judges rarely witnessed. Hinata's quiet encouragement maintained Sylveon's spirit when physical reserves failed.

"Moonblast!"

The final attack came with desperation that somehow enhanced rather than diminished its power. Fairy energy struck with force that the opponent's defenses couldn't entirely absorb.

When the dust settled, only Sylveon remained standing.

"Sylveon wins! Hinata Hyuga advances!"

"Score: nine-point-four out of ten!"

Upset victory through heart that technique alone couldn't match.

Round of 12: Sakura (#4) vs Coordinator (#9)

The elimination came despite everything Sakura tried.

Her opponent specialized in Psychic-types that overwhelmed Grass/Poison defenses before Toxic could accumulate meaningful damage. Each strategy she attempted met counters that experience had prepared.

"Roserade is unable to battle! Winner advances!"

Sakura recalled her partner with the grace that four contests had developed.

"Good match," she told her opponent. "You earned it."

Later, she found Kasumi in the competitor's section.

"Win the whole thing," Sakura said. "For those of us who can't."

"I'll try."

"Don't try. Do it." Sakura's smile held competitive respect that losses couldn't diminish. "Show them what bond can accomplish."

Semifinals Bracket Set:

The top six emerged from elimination rounds:

Semifinal 1: Kasumi Uzumaki (#1) vs Coordinator (#6)

Semifinal 2: Ino Yamanaka (#2) vs Hinata Hyuga (#3)

"Projected finals," Kiyomi observed. "Kasumi versus Ino. Same as Celadon, if favorites win."

"Different circumstances." Kasumi studied the bracket. "Ino's on home territory. Hinata's between us."

"You're ahead on combined scores."

"Scores don't win battles." Kasumi's violet eyes held determination that recent conversations had intensified. "Tomorrow decides who faces whom in the final. Everything before was preparation."

The semifinals awaited.

And Kasumi intended to reach the finals, regardless of who stood between her and that goal.
