Chapter 171 - The Final Battle

The championship rested on a single battle.

Kasumi and Hinata stood at opposite ends of the arena, the weight of everything they'd built pressing against composure that competition had tested throughout the day. One more exchange. One more chance. Everything culminating in this moment.

"Battle Three!" the announcer declared, voice carrying the gravity everyone felt. "Championship decider! Everything comes down to this!"

"Togekiss!"

Kasumi's choice carried emotional significance that statistics couldn't capture. The Jubilee Pokémon had been her first Contest partner, the one who had started her journey, who had grown alongside her from uncertain beginner to championship competitor.

"Gardevoir!"

Hinata's selection matched that weight. The Embrace Pokémon represented everything she'd overcome, shyness, doubt, the assumption that quiet voices couldn't compete.

Fairy/Flying versus Psychic/Fairy. Reversed from Battle 1. Both Pokémon showed exhaustion from previous matches, reserves depleted by competition that had demanded everything.

"Battle begin!"

Both Coordinators bowed.

The gesture was spontaneous, not required by protocol, not expected by audiences. Simple acknowledgment that what followed would be fought with honor, regardless of outcome.

"Here we go," Kasumi whispered.

"Together," Hinata agreed.

"Ancient Power!"

The technique launched with hope rather than certainty.

Stones materialized around Togekiss, orbiting before launching toward Gardevoir with Rock-type force. The attack connected, but more significantly, the secondary effect triggered.

Golden light suffused Togekiss as all stats increased simultaneously. The ten-percent chance that had been gamble became reality.

"Stat boost!" the announcer exclaimed. "Togekiss has become significantly more powerful!"

"Lucky," Hinata murmured, processing the shift.

"Fortunate," Kasumi corrected with slight smile. "But I'll take it."

Hinata didn't panic.

"Psychic, control the field!"

Gardevoir's telekinetic force spread throughout the arena, creating invisible barriers that limited Togekiss's aerial options. The Jubilee Pokémon's flight paths became constrained, three-dimensional advantage reduced to predictable patterns.

"Forcing closer combat," Kiyomi observed. "She's negating aerial superiority."

Togekiss struggled against the psychic constraints, boost fading to frustration as mobility that defined its species became limited.

"Air Slash!"

The wind blades cut through psychic holds, creating gaps in the telekinetic control. Not freedom, but opportunity.

"She's fighting for every inch," Miyuki said.

Kasumi's advantage showed in tactical thinking.

Months of traveling with Sasuke had taught her to read battles differently, not just performance, but strategy. The analytical approach that had made him successful had influenced her approach.

"Aura Sphere!"

The Fighting-type technique couldn't miss. Gardevoir's attempts to evade, to create barriers, to redirect, none of it mattered against attack designed to find its target regardless of defense.

Impact. Significant damage.

"She's using guaranteed-hit attacks," Sasuke observed from the stands. "Smart against an opponent with psychic manipulation."

"Moonblast!"

Hinata's counter came with power that Gardevoir's training had refined. Fairy against Fairy dealt neutral damage, but Gardevoir's special attack exceeded Togekiss's defensive capabilities.

The lunar energy struck with force that depleted resources the stat boost was supposed to protect.

"Boost fading," Kasumi calculated. "I need to finish before it expires."

The golden glow around Togekiss dimmed visibly. Time limit on enhanced capabilities was approaching.

"Follow Me!"

The technique was unexpected, drawing attention in battle rather than performance. Gardevoir's focus locked onto Togekiss involuntarily, the move's mechanics overriding conscious targeting.

"She's fixing Gardevoir's attention," Kiyomi realized. "Why would, "

"Sky Attack!"

The charge began while Gardevoir remained fixed on Togekiss's position. Ultimate Flying-type technique, power that required vulnerability during preparation.

"Psychic! Stop the charge!"

Hinata's response came with desperation that recognized the threat. Gardevoir's telekinetic force attempted to disrupt Togekiss's gathering energy.

But the bond between Kasumi and Togekiss held.

Psychic pressure pushed against the charge, trying to collapse the building attack. Togekiss shook with the effort of resistance, but didn't stop.

"Push through!" Kasumi's voice carried certainty that transferred to her partner.

Sky Attack completed.

"Launch!"

Togekiss erupted across the arena, Flying-type energy surrounding its form in assault that couldn't be evaded, couldn't be deflected, couldn't be survived without countering.

"Moonblast, maximum power!"

Hinata committed everything remaining. Gardevoir gathered Fairy energy for collision rather than avoidance.

Impact was inevitable.

Sky Attack met Moonblast with force that exceeded anything the arena had contained.

The explosion filled every space with light that demanded closed eyes, with sound that demanded covered ears. The protective barriers strained against energies they'd been designed for but never tested.

Silence followed.

Then gradual clearing as smoke dissipated and vision returned.

Gardevoir lay motionless on the arena floor.

The Embrace Pokémon that had fought through exhaustion, through disadvantage, through everything Hinata's determination had demanded, it had finally reached limits that couldn't be exceeded.

Togekiss hovered above the stage, barely maintaining altitude. The Jubilee Pokémon's wings trembled with effort that exceeded normal parameters.

Then it collapsed.

But its eyes remained open. Its consciousness remained intact. The battle that had pushed both Pokémon to absolute limits had found its victor.

"Hinata Hyuga's Pokémon is unable to continue!"

"Kasumi Uzumaki's Pokémon is able to continue!"

"Winner: Kasumi Uzumaki! Saffron Contest Champion!"

Kasumi fell to her knees.

Tears came without permission, without control, without any attempt to maintain composure that competition had required. She'd won. Against one of her closest friends, on foreign territory, through battles that had demanded everything she possessed.

Fourth ribbon.

Championship victory.

Journey progressed in ways she couldn't have imagined when it began.

"Togekiss." She recalled her partner with hands that shook. "You were incredible. You're always incredible."

Hinata approached through the celebrating crowd.

Her own tears had begun falling somewhere during the final exchange, and she made no attempt to hide them. The battle she'd lost had been beautiful. The friendship she maintained was more valuable than any ribbon.

"That was perfect," Hinata said, pulling Kasumi into an embrace that communicated everything words struggled to express.

"You were amazing," Kasumi replied. "I've never been pushed that hard."

"You deserved to win. Your bond with Togekiss, it's everything Contests should celebrate."

"So is yours with your Pokémon. You'll win your championship. Soon."

"Maybe. But today was yours." Hinata stepped back, smiling through tears. "Enjoy it."

The trophy presentation proceeded with ceremony that the battle had earned.

The Saffron Ribbon gleamed with psychic-symbol design, acknowledgment of the city's specialty captured in championship recognition. The trophy bore Kasumi's name beside previous champions whose legacies she now joined.

"Your speech," the official prompted.

Kasumi faced the crowd, the microphone, the cameras that would broadcast her words across the region.

"This ribbon belongs to everyone who helped me earn it."

Her voice carried despite emotions that threatened to overwhelm.

"Hinata, my opponent, my friend. You made me better today than I've ever been. Competing against you was an honor."

Applause acknowledged the truth of her words.

"My Pokémon, Togekiss, Gardevoir, Espeon, all of them. They fight for me. They perform for me. They give everything because our bonds mean everything."

More applause.

"My traveling companions. Miyuki, who keeps us healthy. Kiyomi, who keeps us informed." She paused, emotion building. "And Sasuke. Who always believes in me. Even when I don't believe in myself."

Her violet eyes found his crimson ones in the crowd.

"Thank you. For everything."

The evening celebration merged Kasumi's victory with reunion.

Naruto's group had arrived to support Hinata, the fellow Supernova and his companions joining the gathering that formed naturally after competition concluded.

"That was amazing!" Naruto's enthusiasm exceeded all expectations. "You're as strong as Sasuke!"

"That's..."

"The highest compliment!" Naruto continued without pause. "Sasuke's super strong and you beat everyone just like he beats everyone and it was incredible!"

Hinata smiled at her traveling companion's characteristic energy. "He's been saying that since the final ended."

"Because it's true!"

Sasuke accepted the comparison with slight nod that might have been appreciation or might have been simple acknowledgment.

"Four ribbons," he said to Kasumi. "Halfway to Grand Festival."

"Four badges," she replied.

"We're both on schedule."

"We're both ahead of schedule." Kasumi's smile carried exhaustion and triumph in equal measure. "And we're doing it together."

The celebration continued late into the night, champions and competitors, friends and rivals, all sharing moments that competition had made possible.
